Playing both sides when you’re a spy is a dangerous game. You must keep your lies straight if you hope to survive, and knowing who to trust is a constant struggle. People you coordinate missions with say they have your best interests and protection in mind, but do they? Who’s to say they won’t throw you to wolves to save their skin when everything goes south? Keira Knightley will find out who has her back and who wants her dead in the upcoming spy thriller series Black Doves, premiering globally on Netflix on December 5, 2024.

Lucy Forbes, lead director of The End of The F***ing World’s second season, has spent much of the last 12 months in the woods and forests of deepest, darkest Wales, where she has been shooting four episodes of the Channel 4/Netflix drama and BBC dark comedy In My Skin.
She has been creating rules to ensure that the nihilism of the Jessica Barden-fronted graphic novel adaptation and the Kayleigh Llewellyn-penned coming-of-age story look right and ultimately “trying not to fuck it up”.
Having achieved this, she also came home to London to find a nice surprise, a slew of messages from young, female directors following the launch of The End of The Fxxking World earlier this month.

Netflix dropped the trailer for Season 2 of “The End of the F***ing World” Wednesday, which featured Graham Coxon’s cover of Billy Idol’s “White Wedding.” And yes, the show used the song in pretty much the most depressing way you could possibly imagine.
In the 1-minute, 31-second video above, you’ll see an even-more-depressed-than-usual Alyssa (Jessica Barden) is getting married, though we don’t get to see to who. And she’s obviously still grieving the apparent death of her boyfriend James (Alex Lawther) at the end of Season 2. For those of you who were hoping that cliffhanger meant he could still be alive, looks like that’s not the case. And based on a telling image in the trailer of Alyssa looking at a bullet with “James” engraved on it, we’re concerned she’s now considering taking her own life.

“The End of the F***ing World” became an unexpected smash hit on Netflix in January 2018 thanks to the breakout chemistry between its breakthrough actors Jessica Barden and Alex Lawther. The premise was simple and addictive: Lawther’s sociopathic James agrees to run away with Barden’s reckless Alyssa with the intent of killing her at some point, but their blossoming relationship complicates things. Braden and Lawther’s connection was irresistible, which is why “The End of the F***ing World” faces a challenge in its upcoming second season.
The first season of “The End of the F***ing world” ended with James attempting to save Alyssa’s life by running off to attract the attention of armed police officers chasing them down. As James runs across the beach being chased, his voiceover reveals that his relationship with Alyssa has shown him the value of what human connection means. The...

Pica, or the compulsion to consume things nowhere to be found on the food pyramid — like handfuls of dirt, stray pieces of jewelry, or a juicy double-a battery — serves as a metaphor for one woman’s struggle against the patriarchy in Carlo Mirabella-Davis’ “Swallow.” A bold and unconventional thriller made real by the evolution of lead actress Haley Bennett (a prize winner at the Tribeca Film Festival) from porcelain housewife to jagged-edged reactionary, this striking debut (not counting earlier shorts or co-directed behind-the-music doc ”The Swell Season”) ignores the medical side of the eating disorder in favor of a far more radical psychological reading.
While not as graphic as 2013 German shocker “Wetlands” (with its grimy public toilet seats and queasy scenes of tampon swapping) nor as gory as 2002’s “In My Skin” (which took the concept of “cutting” to extremes), “Swallow” adopts the same basic strategy as those films, using...

Expectation Entertainment has not only met expectations but exceeded them in the two years since it was set up, but given the track-record of its co-CEOs perhaps this should not be such a surprise.
The company, led by Peter Fincham, formerly controller of BBC One and director of television at ITV, and Tim Hincks, latterly president of Endemol Shine Group, is making 13 series this year, spread across all genres, with more set to follow.
Its series include “The Big Narstie Show,” a chat-show hosted by a grime artist, ordered by Channel 4, “Superkids: Breaking Away from Care,” a documentary series about kids in care who take part in a public performance, again ordered by Channel 4, a coming-of-age sitcom about a gay school-kid, “In My Skin,” produced for the BBC, and cookery challenge show “The Brigade,” another BBC show.

With influences as diverse as Kramer vs. Kramer, The Shining, and The Night of the Hunter, Xavier Legrand’s directorial debut Custody is one of the year’s most intense dramas. Also known by its French title Jusqu’à la garde, the story of a custody battle during a messy divorce earned Legrand Best Picture at the Venice Film Festival, and it’s now in theaters in NYC and will expand in the coming weeks. Courtesy of Kino Lorber, we’re pleased to debut an exclusive clip which highlights what Legrand does so well with vantage point and suspense in both his feature and the Oscar-nominated short it is based on.
Our own Jared Mobarak caught Custody in Toronto, and still names it his favorite film of 2018 thus far. In his review, he spoke highly of the film’s depth, saying, “The intensity is too much to bear in the best possible way.

A David Tennant-fronted comedy drama, a multi-character sitcom from the writer of Paddington 2, a comedy crime thriller featuring Episodes’ Daisy Haggard and a raft of new talent form part of the BBC’s latest comedy drive.
The British public broadcaster has unveiled its new slate of comedies across its channels BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three and BBC Four. This comes as BBC comedy chief Shane Allen tells Deadline that by making shows that are quintessentially British, they are increasingly traveling to the U.S. and internationally without the need to be remade.
On BBC One, Paddington 2’s Simon Farnaby and his colleagues behind Horrible Histories and Yonderland are producing Ghosts, a multi-character sitcom. Farnaby, Mathew Baynton, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond are working with Monumental Television on the six-part horror comedy, which follows a group of restless spirits squabbling in a crumbling country house.

Custody, also known by its French title Jusqu’à la garde, tells the seemingly familiar story of a messy divorce, and the inherent conversation of child custody that comes along with it. However, director Xavier Legrand ups the ante by shifting the tone to be electrifying rather than simply dramatic, and this tonal augmentation can be seen clearly in the first U.S. trailer.
As far as feature-length directorial debuts go, Custody is a fantastic achievement for Legrand. The film has been selections at a wide range of film festivals including the distinguished Toronto International and Venice Film Festival (at which Legrand took home the Best Director award). Our own Jared Mobarak caught Custody in Toronto and spoke highly of the film’s depth: “The intensity is too much to bear in the best possible way. Legrand knows exactly where to position his characters and what’s necessary to break them.

I am a woman who has watched many repellant films in my time, in fact it is my hobby to watch as many as I can and then write about them. There is something very satisfying about watching repellant movies – it’s like levitating – a bizarre unique experience – except for the Japanese and Italians for whom watching repulsive movies is a national pastime respectively.
I have catalogued below a wide range of repellant films. Despite their putridness, each of them have a cult following, proving that there are a lot of cinema viewers out there who like watching disgusting things happen on the screen. It’s not just me and rotten.com.
20. Dans Ma Peau (2002)

The Fantasia Film Festival is taking place from July 18th to August 6th in Montreal and will feature over 100 films from around the world. Horror Is Child’S Play – Don Mancini’S Curse Of Chucky (World Premiere)
A rarity among genre franchises, the Child’S Play series (begun in 1988) has retained the sure-handed guidance of original screenwriter/creator Don Mancini throughout killer doll Chucky’s decades’-long reign of horror. Mancini, who will be hosting our “scar-studded” world premiere, graduated to the director’s chair with 2004’s Seed Of Chucky, after having co-written or written every entry in the series. His longevity with the project is, of course, matched by the fiendish voiceover work by...

Dans Ma Peau (In My Skin)
Written by Marina de Van
Directed by Marina de Van
France, 2002
Though his niche is most frequently described as “body horror,” the self-annihilating characters who populate David Cronenberg’s films tend to be driven, at least at first, by external stimuli, usually of the pseudo-scientific sort; the faulty teleporter in The Fly; the pirate signals of Videodrome, the mutant computer game of eXistenZ, the epidemic disease in Rabid, etc. Sure, the more horrific aspects tend to manifest themselves on, in or through the physical body of these films’ protagonists, but the evil began from without. That’s not the case in In My Skin, a true body horror film in content if not in form; in fact, in tone and tempo, it’s essentially a chamber drama – only one that it’s impossible to imagine anyone other than hardcore genre buffs getting through thanks...

The co-director of the newest horrifying French thriller In Their Sleep talks French horror, character development, and her new suspense film Totem in our interview.
Caroline du Potet’s new horror film Dans Ton Sommeil (In Iheir Sleep) has just hit American audiences, and it’s got a relentless, nerve-wracking, desperate tone that embodies what it means to make a modern French horror film.
"Ten years ago, it was almost impossible to make a horror film in France," admits Caroline. "There were only comedies or dramas. Then, a new generation of filmmakers, like Alexandre Aja, started to initiate the movement."
In the past ten years, French horror cinema has grown by leaps and bounds. The films Inside, Dans Ma Peau, Frontiers, Martyrs, and Haute Tension made French horror a staple of the current genre. French horror films have retained the mystique and creativity that Hollywood horror movies and remakes are sorely lacking these days.

Writer-Director Marina de Van’s follow-up to body horror In My Skin Takes an even bolder step into the mysteries of identity.
French director Marina de Van's thriller Don't Look Back (Ne me retourne pas) plays with identity and body doubles a la David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers and Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. De Van directed the weirdly grotesque personal jouney In My Skin (Dans Ma Peau) in 2003, which shocked audiences with its brutal display of self-mutilation and self-discovery in the lead female character. This is the next film she's tackled, which stars Jeanne Sophie Marceau (The World Is Not Enough and Braveheart) and Monica Bellucci (The Matrix Reloaded, , Irreversible and The Passion of the Christ), two of France's most celebrated modern actresses.
It's on DVD in the USA from on November 16, 2010.

You may have noticed a recent news item here on the site. Wyck Godfrey (producer of the abortion fest that is Twilight) is planning to remake the film Martyrs. I won’t say too much about it except that Will and myself, your loyal scribes, have come out strongly against said remake. You can see our comments here.
This news clearly got my blood boiling, and I’ve decided to use this Hump-Day Threesome to get y’all to watch the original film, so you’ll know what’s being corrupted. And while you’re at, you might as well check out these other two stellar films as well.
For those of you who may not know, all three of these films fit into the category called New French Extremism—a certain school of French-language films that… shall we say, go there? (Ten bonus dork points to the person who places that reference.

Wellspring grabs 'Peau' for States
NEW YORK -- Continuing a flurry of recent deals under its new head of acquisitions, Marie Therese Guirgis, indie banner Wellspring has acquired U.S rights to Dans ma peau (In My Skin), the first feature directed by Marina de Van. Peau, which follows a young woman's increasing fascination with her body after sustaining an injury at a party, premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain and will be released theatrically at the end of the year. De Van, who co-wrote Francois Ozon's 8 Women and Under the Sand, penned the script and stars in Peau. Laurence Farenc served as producer. The deal was brokered by Guirgis and Pierre Menahem of Paris-based sales outfit Celluloid Dreams. Also this month, Wellspring snapped up international rights to Billy Corben's controversial documentary Raw Deal as well as another documentary, Horns and Halos, by Michael Galinsky and Suki Hawley (HR 3/18).
