The 31st edition of London’s Raindance Film Festival will open with the U.K. premiere of British actor Jack Huston’s directorial debut “Day of the Fight.”
The film comes to Raindance fresh off its Venice debut, where Huston was honored by Variety as a breakthrough director.
The story of a once-renowned boxer who takes a redemptive journey through his past and present on the day of his first fight since he left prison stars Michael Pitt alongside a cast including Ron Perlman, Joe Pesci, and a cameo from Steve Buscemi.
The U.K. premiere of Isabel Coixet’s “Un Amor” will close the festival after it bows at San Sebastian. Based on Sara Mesa’s bestselling novel, Laia Costa plays a young woman who escapes her stressful life in the city and relocates to rural Spain. When she accepts a disturbing sexual proposal, it gives rise to an all-consuming and obsessive passion.

Amazon Prime Video and Blumhouse Television are teaming up for a new slasher-comedy starring Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Julie Bowen and Randall Park.
“Totally Killer” follows Shipka’s Jamie, whose mom Pam (Bowen) is terrorized by the resurgence of the Sweet Sixteen Killer — a masked maniac that slaughtered a group of teenage girls in the ‘80s. With the help of her friend Amelia (Kelcey Mawema), she travels back in time to 1987 and teams up with the teen version of her mom (Holt) to try and stop the killer.
“We thought this genre mash-up of slasher/comedy with a twist of time travel was just so fun, and Nahnatchka Khan is perfect to direct,” said Chris McCumber, president of Blumhouse Television.
Jen D’Angelo is penning the screenplay based on an original script by David Matalon and Sasha Perl-Raver. Production begins Thursday in Vancouver.

This week, a very old recording industry tradition took center stage. We’re talking, of course, about the answer song.
Answer records are songs that “answer” a previous recording by a different artist, sometimes directly addressing a specific incident, other times playing off its themes. The novelty has been around for decades, crossing over from blues to R&b to country to hip-hop, and often is an answer by one gender to another.
The trick originally was designed to capture the sales momentum of the original song. Rarely has it achieved equal success, but certainly gave fans and the industry something to latch onto in the wake of a hit.
For example, the 1963 song by Andrea Carroll, It Hurts To Be Sixteen, was the answer record to Neil Sedaka’s Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen. In this case, sales-savvy Sedaka wrote the melody to both, using different lyricists to convey the differing perspectives.

Slamdance has awarded its grand prize for screenwriting to writer Joyce Sherrí for her first feature screenplay for coming-of-age drama “Sweet Sixteen.”
The festival announced 13 prizes Thursday during a live-stream ceremony co-presented by Writers Guild of America West and hosted by Slamdance alum Todd Berger across feature film, horror/thriller, TV pilot and short film categories. Slamdance awarded more than $16,000 to winners across all categories.
“Sweet Sixteen” centers on Sweet, a 15-year-old girl who tries to convince her parents to throw her a big sweet 16 birthday party, but money and family problems lead her down a destructive path.
“Black people are not a monolith then neither are our experiences,” said Sherrí. “There is more to us than racial trauma. Sometimes we just want something as simple as a first kiss or a sweet sixteenth birthday party. I wrote ‘Sweet Sixteen’ because I want to share a story that explores a...

This the nest review contains spoilers.
The book world already has a term for Scotland-set detective novels – Tartan Noir. There’s an increasing need for similar to describe the emerging genre of glossy BBC domestic thrillers set north of the border. Trust Me, The Replacement, The Victim, The Cry and now The Nest… all miniseries, all stories about women, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the highlands and the steel-glass shine of regenerated city centres and architect-designed residences.
Visit Scotland Noir, maybe? Minted-Lassie Thrillers?
The Nest’s minted lassie is Emily (Sophie Rundle), a Glasgow music teacher married to local-boy-done-good Dan (Martin Compston). They live in a dream loch-side house and appear to have it all. Love, money, a devoted marriage and quite definitely, a place in the world. What they don’t – and can’t – have, is a child.

For 50-plus years, British filmmaker Ken Loach has been a crusading white knight for the working class. His heroes are laborers, carpenters, union organizers, social workers, immigrant house cleaners, pub-dwelling punters, football-fanatic postmen. Kids, whether it’s the falconry-obsessed lad of Kes (1969) or the drug-dealing teen of Sweet Sixteen (2002), are usually fighting the effects or suffering the after-effects of economic inequity. Even his historical dramas set during the Irish War for Independence (The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Jimmy’s Hall) and the Spanish Civil War (Land and Freedom) tend to...

And because there really is a TV special or movie for everything, here are the four episodes (and one iconic movie starring Amy Adams) that you should be watching in honor of the honorary 366th day of the year. These pop culture gems are proof that every holiday deserves a weird tradition, a mascot and a theme song.

From the ‘70s on calendar horror was all the rage with the slasher crowd; Black Christmas begat Halloween which gave us Friday the 13th and on and on, a red ‘X’ flooding the dates throughout the year. Of course we can’t forget birthdays either, so after Happy Birthday to Me we were offered Sweet Sixteen (1983), an interesting, sometimes icky film that leans closer to murder mystery than it does slasher.
Released in mid September by Century International, Sweet Sixteen got lost amid the masked mutilators and supernatural shenanigans of the day, but that shouldn’t deter any ardent fan of the era and those seeking a horror film grounded in story more than exploitation – depending on how it’s viewed.
The story of Sweet Sixteen has an air of Choose Your Own Adventure about it depending on which version you watch – the theatrical cut or the director’s cut.

The Gamecocks took down the second-seeded team on Sunday night, despite many outlets putting complete confidence in Duke’s Blue Devils. In fact, USA Today Sports’ Twitter account declared, “Duke’s path to the Final Four looks ridiculously clear with Villanova’s loss.”

When bluesman B.B. King died last year, he bequeathed to the world a body of work spanning six decades that brought joy and comfort to millions. The crooner of "The Thrill Is Gone" and "Sweet Sixteen" transformed American music, inspiring such rockers as Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson and Buddy Guy. King was 89 when he succumbed to congestive heart failure in his Las Vegas home and died peacefully in his sleep on May 14, 2015. The year since then has been decidedly less peaceful. Saturday was Free Comic Book Day, the amazing annual event where the world celebrates comics by giving away a few free comics to one and all. And by a few comics, I mean millions!
Fifteen years ago, Joe Field had a wonderful idea that was inspired by a Free Ice Cream Cone Day, and it became a reality. And now it’s grown each year to the delight of fans young and old. Kids, parents, teens, hardcore fans, casual fans, curious potential new fans, advertisers, publishers and retailers helped celebrate the 15th Annual Free Comic Book Day.
This year, I broke my personal record and visited eight amazing comic shops in northern NJ, just outside of New York City. And it was really nine if you count my visit to Main Street Comics on Fcbd’s Eve.
It was a great day, as witnessed in many stores.

Exclusive: BBC Films and BFI also set to board as core funders on theatrical documentary.
Louise Osmond, the UK director behind Sundance winner Dark Horse, is to direct Sixteen Films’ upcoming theatrical documentary exploring Ken Loach’s 50-year-old career through the battles fought around his films.
“Louise is a wonderful, observational filmmaker so she’s an ideal person to have come on board,” said Loach’s long-time producer Rebecca O’Brien at Sixteen Films.
Osmond replaces Loach’s son, Jim Loach, who was attached to the project when it was first announced last October.
“In the end, Jim decided not to do it and I can understand why - it’s too close to home,” said O’Brien.
In addition to signing Osmond, Sixteen Films has secured the backing of BBC Films and also expects the BFI (British Film Institute) to confirm its involvement at the beginning of July.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star’s eldest child posted an ethereal-looking Instagram to her account in honor of her Sweet Sixteen birthday party. “My Sour Sixteen,” she cooly captioned a photo of herself looking all grown up in costume for her fete, which kicked off days before her actual birthday on May 27. “Sweet sixteen dungeon,” she added on another photo of her party’s rose-covered tables. To whomever coined the term, “Sweet Sixteen”, you sir or madam are a liar. I remember my sixteenth year being one of the worst years of my life. It all started a couple months shy of my sixteenth birthday when my mother told us that our father had been abusing some substances, which I will remain nameless. She told us that there may be a slight chance of us moving to Texas to live with my aunt. That’s how serious the condition of my father’s addiction really was. That was just my home life. That’s not to mention the subjects in school I was failing and the issues with the girl I was dating at the time. All of this started coming down and weighting on me pretty darn heavy.
So I thought and pondered over a few sleepless nights and broke up with that girlfriend and...

Winner of the Jury Prize at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, Ken Loach’s The Angels’ Share revisits the themes the prolific director first explored in 1969’s Kes and later in 2002’s Sweet Sixteen. With the number of unemployed young people reaching more than a million in Britain, here is a heist comedy set in the harsh reality of contemporary Glasgow, where youth who get off to a rough start see no way out and harbor no hope for the future. In an indirect indictment of a society that fails them, a small crew of petty criminals gets a fresh start...

The working class are a little funny in “The Angels’ Share,” English director Ken Loach’s new bluecollar comedy. “The Angels’ Share” is Loach’s (“Kes”) premiered at Cannes last year after his “The Wind That Shakes the Barley” won the 2006 Palme d’Or and both "Route Irish" and "Looking for Eric" played in competition in 2010 and 2009, respectively. Tonally, Loach’s latest is more of a piece with “Looking for Eric” than “Sweet Sixteen,” though all three films concern young people looking for a way to find a loophole and rise above their lousy social stations in life. In Loach’s recent films, capitalism is like a ponzi scheme and his well-intentioned protagonists are all victims looking to get out with a little something for themselves. In “The Angels’ Share,” members of a Scottish, court-mandated community service group plot to make a little money for themselves and are generically rewarded for their efforts.

Big dogs of both human and fanged varieties played big parts in this week's episode. Let's jump right in!
We start the episode running through the woods at ground level - either I'm rewatching Evil Dead, or we're in one of Bran's kooky dreams again.
Sure enough, Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) - who can walk in his dreams, like the kid from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors - sees the Third Eye Blind Raven, and he tries to shoot it with Jon Snow's (Kit Harington) help. He misses. He hears Ned's voice, then some bratty kid who looks like a Muppet Baby version of Tate from American Horror Story shows up to tell him that he can't kill the raven because the raven is Him. Is this like that "one set of footprints" thing?

Today’s battles determined the final eight spots in the Sweet Sixteen. There’s been a surprising amount of variety in the winners—no single approach seems to be working better than others, but execution is everything. From simple, single-note hops to more complex and unusual flavor combinations—when done well there’s nothing like an Ipa. Even at this stage, the Southeast was still the weakest of the four brackets, but you won’t hear us complaining about having to drink these beers. And at least one of them looks to have a shot at going all the way to the finals. The Southwest, on...

Few filmmakers bring to life social issues as vividly as Ken Loach. Whether helming grand historical dramas about family, love and civil war (The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Land and Freedom) or character-driven films detailing the plight of the working class (Kes, Riff-Raff, Sweet Sixteen, Bread and Roses) Loach is a master of creating universal stories that are immensely relatable regardless of time or place. His latest effort, a documentary, The Spirit of ’45, which had its world premiere at this year’s Berlinale, continues the grand tradition with a story as relevant today as it was over half a …...

However, Compston was quick to take action, asking his followers: "How do you change the password on Twitter from your iPhone?"

Last week we mentioned that you couldn't swing a dead cat on TV these days and miss hitting a hot shirtless dude, and to prove the point we asked our readers to name the TV shows they think provide the best BpB (Beefcake per Broadcast). Based on your comments we were able to narrow the well-muscled field down to just sixteen TV scripted TV shows. These programs run the gamut from broad comedy, horror, fantasy, police procedural to straight up drama, but they all share one rather obvious quality -- they really know how to highlight their gorgeous male cast members. (And we love them for that!)
But now that we've identified your Sweet Sixteen, we figured it was time to turn it back over to our readers. We've arranged these sixteen hot shows in a March Madness style bracket tourney - in each match up, you decide who has the hunkier cast!

British filmmaker Ken Loach has never been one to hide his politics. In fact the throughline to his long, exemplary career, whether on TV or in theaters, whether documentary or narrative, whether small-scale domestic drama (“Sweet Sixteen,” “Kes,” “Ladybird, Ladybird”) or sweeping historical epic (“The Wind that Shakes the Barley,” “Land and Freedom”), has always been one of social awareness and overtly left-wing sensibilities. His characters are often working class people chafing against the injustice and disenfranchisement of their societal roles in the face of powerful contemporary or historical forces. And nowhere is this more in evidence than in his latest film, documentary “The Spirit of ‘45,” which details the rise and fall of the British welfare state: the post-war socialist program of social reform and nationalization of industry, and the subsequent partial or total dismantling of these moves...

This week's snow and ice meant big drops for every title, despite a decent crop of new releases including Django Unchained
The winner: snow
The first properly sunny weekend of the year usually proves devastating to cinemagoing in the UK, but snow and frost can also have an impact, as has just been witnessed. Despite the arrival of a decent crop of new releases – notably the latest Quentin Tarantino flick and the 3D reissue of a Pixar hit – takings overall fell 36% from the previous weekend. All the films in the top 10 that were already on release fell by at least 40% from the previous frame, with Quartet's 60% drop in particular suggesting that the older audience was especially discouraged by icy pavements and dangerous driving conditions.
Despite a dip of 46%, Les Misérables nevertheless managed a second weekend of £4.41m, and an impressive 10-day cumulative total of £17.36m. Tom Hooper's film overtook...

Treat Williams barely survived carnivorous sea monsters in Deep Rising and Ronny Cox famously fell victim to Robocop. Together they will now face a prehistoric threat reborn when bioengineered dinos threaten to transform Los Angeles into a new Age of Dinosaurs.
Using breakthrough flesh-regeneration technology, a biotech firm creates a set of living dinosaurs. But when the creatures escape their museum exhibit and terrorize Los Angeles, a former firefighter must rescue his teenage daughter from the chaos brought on by the Age of Dinosaurs.
I’m going to take a wild guess and speculate that Treat Williams plays the former firefighter and Ronny Cox is cast as the hard ass head of the flesh-regeneration technology, because who better to play the executive officer of a corporation that suffers the consequences when playing God than Robocop’s boss?
Jillian Rose Reed (My Super Psycho Sweet Sixteen: Part 3 and “Weeds”) and actor-stuntman Max Aria co-star.

Happy Sweet Sixteen Lourdes Leon! Madonna's daughter is blowing out 16 candles today and we can only imagine how she's celebrating the coming-of-age birthday! At 16, Lourdes has quite the resumé already. The teen has not only recorded vocals on the hit track "I'm Addicted" from mother Madonna's recent album Mdna. But she also has her own clothing line Material Girl and a beauty line as well. So what's in store for Lourdes, the 16-year-old? Well, possibly a car. Or more likely a car company, since this is clearly a girl who thinks big.

Once infamous for its deprivation and crime, Castlemilk in Glasgow has its rough edges. It also has a new reputation, for producing actors and film stars honed in schools where drama is now seen as 'hardcore'
Ask an outsider what they think of Castlemilk and they'll probably say alcoholism, poverty and poor housing. The estate, on Glasgow's southern edge, has been ranked among Scotland's most deprived places.
But in recent years the area has gained a reputation for something altogether more glamorous: film stars.
Directors Ken Loach and Peter Mullan have cast residents in critically-acclaimed films including Sweet Sixteen, The Angels' Share and Neds, and local talent regularly appears in television productions such as Rab C. Nesbitt, Taggart and soap opera River City.
Castlemilk stars like Stephen McCole, William Ruane and binman-turned-actor Gary Maitland have appeared in major productions and caught the attention of industry figures in Hollywood and Cannes.

Apparently BBC 2‘s best performing drama in eight years, Line of Duty‘s first episode is available today as a Hulu exclusive, with the rest of the four episodes hitting on successive Tuesdays.
If you haven’t heard of it yet, Line of Duty is an intense drama following a certain crime unit that comes under investigation because they’re too successful. DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) is transferred to the equivalent of Internal Affairs after he refuses to cover up a raid that goes wrong, and he finds himself in the hot seat, investigating the officer of the year. The general suggestion being that anyone who appears to be that good has got to be doing something underhanded.

You know, MTV really hasn't been doing too badly when it comes to horror programming. Their Super Psycho Sweet Sixteen flicks are way better than you'd think, and even "Teen Wolf" is deserving of some well placed merit. Now they're read to go bump in the night.
According to THR, the network is currently developing an hour-long “found-footage mystery” project in the style of Paranormal Activity, titled "The Experiment." The scripted effort is based on a story by Brian Horiuchi (Terminal D) and Miguel Sapochnik ("House"), with Paranormal’s Jason Blum ("The River") executive producing through his Blumhouse Productions. Naomi Despres (The English Teacher) is also attached as an executive producer, with Horiuchi set to write and Sapochnik on board to direct.

An adolescent’s sixteenth birthday marks a turning point in life when maturation occurs at a much more rapid pace and the teenager begins to be faced with difficult and important decisions that will shape their future. The same can be said of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, set to kick off its sixteenth edition tomorrow: its Super Sweet Sixteen promises to be nothing if not interesting. That’s not to say that the main focus of North America’s largest genre film festival is changing; in fact, between prolific director Takashi Miike’s festival opener For Love’s Sake – fresh from Cannes and having its North American premiere – and the Canadian premiere of animation studio Laika’s Paranorman, which closes the fest three weeks later, filmgoers will have a whopping 160 films from around the world to choose from. Sitges eat your heart out.
