Jill Hansen, a pro surfer and model, has been charged with attempted murder after she ran over a 73-year-old woman in Honolulu.
Hansen, 30, is an aspiring pro surfer who also has her own line of swim/surf clothes called Cali Candy Wetsuits. According to reports, Hansen followed the victim Elizabeth Conklin to her home in her car and proceeded to run her over in Conklin’s building garage. A bystander, Chris Khoy, who works in Conklin’s building, saw that Hansen was about to run over Conklin again and was able to stop the attack by breaking the back window of Hansen’s car with a crowbar. Startled, Hansen reportedly left the scene on foot and said that her father made her do it.
Conklin is currently in the hospital, but is expected to make a full recovery, and Hansen is being held under a $1 million bail.

For about ninety minutes on Friday evening, February 7th, the auditorium at the Rubin Museum of Art was filled with the sound of music. The occasion was a fundraiser for the David Lynch Foundation, which brings the principles of transcendental meditation (Tm) to school children and adults, as a way of dealing with stress, and with a larger message of peace.
The evening began with a three-song set by Professor Louie and The Crowmatix, beginning with a joyful "Center of Your Circle" (Tm benefit single), followed by "Open Hand, Open Heart" (both from their 2012 album, Wings on Fire). The group was then joined by Dusty Wright for a sing-along of Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released."
Following this, event organizer and co-producer Dusty Wright and members of his group, GIANTfingers along with Professor Louie on accordion and Miss Marie on background vocals, took the stage for a thought-provoking original song,...

Sure, Sunday tends to be overcrowded with high-end TV, including "Boardwalk Empire," "Eastbound and Down," "Homeland," "Masters of Sex," "The Walking Dead" and more, but what to watch the rest of the time? Every Monday, we bring you five noteworthy highlights from the other six days of the week. "Mondays at Racine"/"Open Heart"/"Redemption" Monday, October 14 at 9pm on HBO HBO tends to utterly dominate the short doc Oscar category, and all three of these films -- about a Long Island beauty salon that opens free of charge for cancer patients once a month, Africa’s only free cardiac hospital and eight Rwandan children who journey to have surgery there and can and bottle collectors in New York City -- were up for a 2013 Academy Award in the category, though the prize ultimately went to a non-hbo film, "Inocente." "Pov": "56 Up" Monday, October 14 at 10pm on PBS Michael Apted...

What a night! Seriously, the 2013 Oscars had its share of ups and downs and I'm sure plenty of hatred will be thrown the way of host Seth MacFarlane whose joke selection was all over the place from great to terrible to tasteless to tame, but I'm actually talking about the way tonight's Oscars shared the wealth so evenly. Twelve films won Oscars tonight, 15 if you count the shorts. Argo took home Best Picture, Film Editing and Adapted Screenplay, but in the end it was Life of Pi with the most awards, including the upset over Steven Spielberg (Lincoln). The Oscars often give us plenty to discuss in terms of taste and we all may disagree on many of the overall winners, but I have a much harder time disagreeing when there is no kind of consensus. After all, how often does one single film, over the span of 365 days nail...

Ang Lee’s Life of Pi took home the most awards, with four statues to its name for Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects.

And in the end, it was the movie with a snubbed director that took the top prize. Ben Affleck's "Argo" rocked the Academy Awards by winning the Best Picture of the year award. The biggest surprise for me was Ang Lee who went home with the Best Director trophy for "Life of Pi" while Steven Spielberg went home empty handed. His "Lincoln" still won two Academy Awards, one for Best Actor for the great Daniel Day-Lewis' fine performance as our beloved 16th President, and the other for production design.
Just as I predicted to the lovely Anne Hathaway three months ago, she went home with the Best Supporting Actress trophy for her brilliant performance as Fantine in "Les Miserables." This sort of is a blessing from the Academy as well for turning in a memorable Catwoman performance in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises."

The Oscars took place on Sunday with "Argo" ending up being the big winner of the night, despite the fact that Ben Affleck wasn't even nominated for Best Director. The film also won for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) and Best Editing. "Lincoln" was nominated for twelve Oscars, but ended up winning only two, including Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis and Production Design. Quentin Tarantino got an Oscar for Best Writing (Original Screenplay) for "Django Unchained." Christoph Waltz won Best Supporting Actor award for the same movie. History be damned. A pox on precedent. A poke in gravitas's eye. This year it looks very much as if Argo, the nifty Iranian caper conjured up by Ben Affleck and George Clooney, will speed off with best picture, making it the first film to do so without a best director nomination since Driving Miss Daisy in 1989.
To those who say this riderless horse lacks the poundage of a typical best picture winner, just look at the light lifting the academy has preferred to do of late: The King's Speech, The Artist, and now Argo, just one letter away from an inert gas. In a year of passionate favorites and flash-fire controversies, Affleck's film has emerged as the clear consensus winner – the film that rubs the least number of people up the wrong way.

The polls are closed and the our live blog of the 2013 Oscars is about to begin in just a few short hours (3:30 Pst to be exact), but before we do that I felt it was best to set up a little 2013 Oscar prediction scorecard so we know where everyone stands and where we're most likely to find the most action tonight as the awards are handed out. My podcast partner in crime, Laremy Legel, and already revealed our predictions on the latest episode of the podcast and I also posted mine with commentary along with polls for you to vote on who you thought would win and it looks like between Laremy, myself and the reader results we have about seven categories worth keeping an eye on throughout the night. First there's Best Supporting Actor where Laremy, myself and the readers all disagree, which tells me we should probably...

On Oscar Sunday the great and good of the silver screen will assemble at the Dolby Theatre for the 85th Academy Awards. This year’s extravaganza will surely be a night to remember.
With it being the biggest event in movie geekdom, the Wamg crew came up with their own Oscar predictions. Some of the categories there was a consensus on, while others we were divided.
Throughout the awards season, frontrunners jockeyed for position, all hoping to head into Sunday’s ceremony as the favorite to take home gold.

Photo: AMPAS I'm going out on a limb on a couple of my 2013 Oscar predictions, but I don't think any of these predictions are so wild as to be surprising or so outrageously crazy a miracle would have to happen for them to come true. Like most years, this year's Oscars has its share of locks. This year that includes Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln) for Best Actor, Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) for Best Supporting Actress, Amour for Best Foreign Language Film and Searching for Sugar Man for Best Documentary. Then you have your "most likely" winners, which includes Argo for Best Picture, Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), Claudio Miranda (Life of Pi) for Best Cinematography, Adele's "Skyfall" for Best Song, Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) for Best Score and it would seem Curfew and Paperman have their respective Best Short Film categories wrapped up. However, there is still a lot left to explore.

Predicting the Oscars? Whew! It.s a tough one this year! Besides, honestly, Anne Hathaway and Daniel Day-Lewis, there.s no clear-cut favorite at the 85th Academy Awards. Even Hathaway and Day-Lewis are on shaky grounds, okay, not that much. They may be surefire but what about for Best Picture, or heck, Best Director with the presumed frontrunner, Ben Affleck, missing from the race?
But, every year, I slaved to give you my honest, heartfelt Oscar predictions, which should help you with your Oscar pool.I hope. If you win anything, just give me an Oscar buck!

This week on Grey’s Anatomy, Team Megabucks (Derek, Meredith, Callie, Arizona and Cristina) jumps through one hoop after another to convince a gazillionaire to invest $175 million in their purchase of Seattle Grace. But, because not one of them is an administrator, he passes. “I’m not feeling this,” he says. Luckily, (a) we cannot reach through the TV screen to smack him upside the head, and (b) Team Megabucks just happens to know a coupla crackerjack administrators…

Okay folks, it's crunch time. Have you submitted your Oscar ballot yet? There's big money on the line (at least a hundy we hope, right?).
As we do every year on NextMovie, we're handicapping the Oscar races to give you a leg up on your friends, family and coworkers when entering your high-stakes pool, which as we all know is as much about the glory as the greenbacks (freaking Al from finance still hasn't gotten that smirk off of his face for calling Cotillard over Christie in 2008; get over yourself, Al).
Our usual disclaimers: We do not condone gambling, unless you're in Vegas or on a reservation. Good luck!
(And for a trusty second opinion, check out Joe Reid's Oscar predictions on Film.com.)

The Oscar-nominated documentary shorts tend to be a little more sobering than the animated and live action shorts. These filmmakers are attempting to show current realities, no matter how difficult or unpleasant they might be. But there is also beauty amid the pain.
There’s the 15-year-old homeless girl who finds comfort in her art, the stoic and hard working canners in New York, the sick but brave Rwandan children treated by another country’s generosity, the Long Island cancer patients who lose all their hair but gain a lot more, and the retirement community residents who find moments of...

Burt Reynolds is still recuperating Monday in a Florida hospital after a bout with dehydration and severe flu symptoms, but his rep says the actor is improving and should be released soon.
The 76-year-old star -- who was admitted to the ICU late last week -- "is doing much better" and is expected to leave the hospital on Tuesday or Wednesday, his rep Erik Kritzer said in a statement to Et. "He wants to thank all of you for your caring concern," Kritzer added.

The actor has suffered other bouts of ill health in recent years. In 2010, Reynolds underwent a quintuple heart bypass one year after entering rehab to end a reliance on prescription drug habit acquired after back surgery.

The Oscar nominations are in, and although some members of Hollywood are feeling the biting chill of the Academy's cold shoulder (cough, Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow, cough), there are certainly more than a few institutions who have cause to celebrate. One among them -- the Sundance Film Festival.
The morning's announcement's included 13 nods for Sundance-endorsed films, including last year's bayou-inspired drama, "Beasts of the Southern Wild." Hollywood's awards race just got serious. Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced Oscar nominations for the 2013 Academy Awards on Thursday morning, adding a bit of levity to what will surely be taken quite seriously come Feb. 24, when MacFarlane hosts the actual awards broadcast.
In pre-announcement buzz, Kathryn Bigelow ("Zero Dark Thirty"), Tom Hooper ("Les Miserables"), Ben Affleck ("Argo"), Steven Spielberg ("Lincoln") and their films were all expected to receive nominations.
But MacFarlane did not read Bigelow, Affleck or Hooper's names when ticking off those nominated for Best Director. There was an audible gasp in the room as journalists realized that all three had been snubbed.
"Zero Dark Thirty" and "Argo" did, however, receive nods for Best Picture, where they'll compete with "Amour," "Django Unchained," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Les Miserables," "Life of Pi," "Lincoln" and "Silver Linings Playbook."

Palme d’Or winner Amour & Sundance sensation Beasts Of The Southern Wild are in. Venice & Tiff shown The Master is out. Lincoln (12 noms) and Life Of Pi (11 noms) were tops in number of noms gathered across the board while Silver Linings Playbook will own the red carpet as well with noms in all four acting categories, editing, screenwriting, directing and Best Picture.
In the Best Picture category (this year’s total is nine out of ten), Amour and Beasts Of The Southern Wild are generally considered as the “nice surprise” nominations (these extends itself the Best Director category as well where Haneke and Zeitlin received nods), while Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master is mysteriously snubbed from the batch. Was it too avant-garde or did it simply peak too early? Regardless, the Weinsteins have two horses for the final race with Slp and Django Unchained.

Guess that now is the perfect moment for us to say – surprise, surprise: Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln leads with 12 nominations and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi has 11. But let’s be honest, that’s not the surprise-part of the story. Check out the rest of this report, and take a good look at Best Director category. You will find Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow right there: Not!

The 2013 Academy Award nominations were announced today and it was the Best Director category providing the biggest shock. "Zero Dark Thirty" director Kathryn Bigelow, who previously won the award for 2010's "Hurt Locker," was snubbed.
"Argo" director Ben Affleck was also surprisingly left off the list, meaning frontrunner Steven Spielberg ("Lincoln") will instead be facing off against David O. Russell ("Silver Linings Playbook"), Ang Lee ("Life of Pi"), Michael Haneke ("Amour") and Benh Zeitlin ("Beasts of the Southern Wild").
Those seven films were all also nominated for Best Picture, along with "Django Unchained" and "Les Misérables." Overall, "Lincoln" led the way with 12 nominations, followed closely by "Life of Pi" with 11 and "Les Misérables and "Silver Linings Playbook" with eight each.
The Best Actress category also provided plenty of headlines, as "Amour"'s Emmanuelle Riva, who became the oldest Best Actress nominee in history at age 85, was joined by "Beasts of the Southern Wild...
