A Brazilian version of Big Brother (1999) was first proposed to Silvio Santos and his network SBT in 2000, but he thought the Dutch format was too expensive. He signed a contract to keep this format a secret, but then created his own reality show from the Endemol blueprint, similarly themed but featuring celebrities: Casa dos Artistas (2001). Endemol and Globo TV sued Santos for plagiarism. Ironically, his grandson Tiago Abravanel became a "Big Brother" houseguest in 2022.
