Spirited Away (2001) Screenshot: Gkids In the Disney and Pixar era, most American moviegoers have come to define animation as candy-colored kiddie fare that traffics in facile, rugrat-ready themes about family and finding yourself. But according to Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro, that definition is not only limiting, it’s insulting.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Outlander” Season 3 Episode 8, “First Wife.”]
Requited Love
As predicted by the reveal of Jamie’s second wife at the end of the last episode, the newly reunited couple’s homecoming bliss at Lallybroch was short-lived to say the least — if you would call it bliss in the first place, that is. With Jenny and Ian ticked off at Claire and Jamie for lying to them and exposing their youngest child to boozy bootlegging, brothels and murder, there weren’t many pleasantries to be passed around. The reveal that Laoghaire (a.k.a. the girl who tried to have Claire murdered back in Season 1), was Jamie’s new wife obviously was never going to go over well, but it was an especially hard thing for Claire to accept, given how coldly everyone else was treating her.
It’s no wonder that she felt as though fleeing back to the rocks was the best course of action,...

Community Season 5, Episode 12 “Basic Story (Part 1)”
Written by Carol Kolb
Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar
Season finale airs 4/17 at 8pm Et on NBC
As one half of a season (series? say it ain’t so, NBC!) finale, it’s hard to judge “Basic Story” in a vacuum. Double that when it’s an episode where nothing actually happens – until everything is happening, and the fate of Greendale is in the balance, as is the sanity of every member of the Greendale 7 (except Shirley, I guess? She just kind of vanishes at some point). In those final moments, it does feel like Community is straining a bit to give its finale purpose, throwing in tease after tease (including one I’m really hoping is just a big, fat mislead for “Basic Sandwich” to demolish) – though again, the episode plays things so close to the chest it’s hard to tell what’s actually going on.

There's so much to like about the 1985 science fiction / horror / action-packed apocalypse flick Lifeforce that one finds it very easy to overlook the film's numerous problems. I mean, why worry about boring stuff like editorial cohesion and tonal consistency when you have a flick jam-packed with spaceships, vampires, lasers, mass murder, and one of the most gorgeous naked ladies to ever grace the silver screen? No movie geek worth their stripes could dismiss Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce without admitting that there's some pretty amazing stuff on display in this adorably weird movie. Or if not amazing then at least novel, diverting, and audacious. The movie does borrow from a ton of other sci-fi films, but it has also inspired a few moments in films like Species, The Hidden, and 28 Days Later, so it all seems fair in the end.
Look, the movie is based on a novel called The Space Vampires,...

It looks like the Keno brothers are done finding "buried treasure," at least on Fox anyway. The network has dropped the short-lived non-scripted series after one season. Buried Treasure ran for four episodes last summer, from August 24th until September 14th.
The TV series follows two professional appraisers, Leigh and Leslie Keno, as they travel to people's houses to inspect potentially rare and unusual items. The participants are often in need of cash and so episodes share their emotional journies as items are brought to auction and sold.
The Keno brothers are well known from their work on PBS' Antiques Roadshow series.
Unfortunately, the non-scripted show certainly wasn't a secret gold mine for the network. The premiere attracted a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.67 million total viewers. It was in fourth place in its timeslot, beaten by...

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011
The "America's Got Talent" finale was down a little from last year's season ender, but it still provided a solid platform to launch NBC's new comedy "Up All Night." Companion comedy "Free Agents" wasn't so fortunate, though, and the debut of "Survivor: South Pacific" was also a little low.
And it would appear we are a nation of "H8Rs," as The CW's celeb-boosterism reality series got off to a pretty meager start. "America's Next Top Model" took a tumble as well.
NBC led the way Wednesday night with 12.2 million viewers and a 7.4 rating/12 share in households. CBS (9.2 million, 5.5/9) came in second. ABC finished a distant third with 4.5 million viewers and a 2.9/5, followed by Fox at 2.9 million and 2.0/3. The CW's reality premieres averaged 1.6 million viewers and a 1.1/2.
The race was a little closer for the adults 18-49 crown, but NBC still came out on top with a 3.3 rating.

Meanwhile, CBS’ Big Brother (2.8/9) at 9 Pm was down 12% from its season high last week to tie Talent as the highest-rated program of the night. NBC (1.9/5, 7.9 million) also tied CBS (1.9/5, 6.5 million) in the demo for the night while finishing No. 1 in viewers. What do American Idol, Dancing With the Stars, Survivor, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, Hell’s Kitchen, Big Brother, So You Think You Can Dance, America’s Got Talent and Wipeout have in common? They are broadcast TV’s biggest reality franchises of the past decade. And they all launched in the summer. Summer used to be a time for the networks to try out innovative reality formats that had never been done on the Big 4 broadcast nets (ballroom dancing or singing competitions, shows about castaways on an island or strangers locked in a house) or had been gone from primetime for a long time (game shows). Now the broadcast networks are throwing on retreads of over-exposed formats from June through August, so it’s no surprise that nothing has stuck since Wipeout launched on ABC in June 2008. A slew of newcomers came and went over the past three months: ABC’s Expedition Impossible,...

On NBC's game show called It's Worth What?, contestants play the appraisers and try to guess the value of unique items. Fox's show has been tanking and probably won't be back. Has NBC's been doing any better?
Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, It's Worth What? has a pair of contestants trying to guess the price of various objects or services, ranging from the cost of a night at the Jersey Shore house to the skeleton of a cave bear from 150,000 Bce. The challenges escalate in difficulty as the game progresses. If the contestants complete all rounds, they can take home as much as $1,000,000.

CBS’ Big Brother (3.2/10 in adults 18-49, 8.2 million viewers) was the top program last night. It was up 10% from last week in the demo to tie its season high on any night. Since Big Brother tends to go up in the finals (Vs. last week’s fast nationals, last night’s episode was actually up 14%), the reality series may post a new high when the Live+same day ratings are released later today. Despite airing repeats at 9 Pm and 10 Pm, CBS (2.0/6, 6.4 million) still topped the night in 18-49. NBC (1.7/5, 6.9 million) was second in the demo, barely edging Univision (1.6/5), and tops in viewers with Minute to Win It (1.4/4) and America’s Got Talent (2.5/7). Minute was down a tenth, while Talent was down 14%. Like Big Brother, the talent competition tends to rise in the finals, so fast nationals-vs-fast nationals is a more fair comparison. That way, Talent was down 11%. In its second week,...

Last week, the Fox network debuted a new reality TV series called Buried Treasure. Will this one be a goldmine for the network like American Idol or dead weight that will be quickly cancelled?
Buried Treasure follows twin brothers and appraisers Leigh and Leslie Keno as they visit people's homes. Appearing as appraisers on the PBS series Antique Roadshow, the "treasure hunters" help people discover that some of the items in their homes may be worth a lot more than they know. For example, the old cabinet that was your grandmother's might be worth enough to wipe out your credit card debt or pay for your kid's college education. Viewers also get to see how these discoveries affect the owner's lives.
The TV show debuted last Wednesday to a very disappointing 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 3.67 million viewers. It ranked fourth...

Fox’s unscripted series Buried Treasure became the latest new broadcast show this summer to underperform, drawing a 1.0/3 among adults 18-49 in its premiere last night. It finished last in the 8 Pm hour behind CBS’ Big Brother (2.8/9), NBC’s Minute To Win It (1.5/5) and ABC’s repeat of The Middle (1.2/4). Buried Treasure was also lower than the debut of NBC’s similarly themed It’s Worth What? (1.8/6) last month. Minute to Win It and America’s Got Talent (2.8/8) were both up from last week, by 15% and 12%, respectively. With a repeat of Law & Order: Svu (1.6/4) also improving the 10 Pm slot by 14% vs. the finale of Love in the Wild last week, NBC (2.0/6, 7.3 million viewers) edged CBS (1.8/5, 6.3 million) for No. 1 on the night. Big Brother, which was followed by drama repeats, was down 10% from last Wednesday and tied NBC’s Talent for the top spot in 18-49. ABC aired comedy repeats with...

The Keno brothers seem pretty unflappable. The twin "Antiques Roadshow" veterans talked right through Tuesday's 5.9 earthquake as they told us about their new Fox series, "Buried Treasure," from the network's New York offices. They made no mention of the rocking all around them -- probably because there weren't any valuables around. The show, which premieres Wednesday night, features 54-year-old Leigh and Leslie visiting people's homes to assess their possessions. Occasionally they get to coolly break the news that an old cabinet could pay off the mortgage. Given their convivality, we shouldn't have been...

Updated: Fox's reality series MasterChef is getting a reprieve. Originally, Fox had planned to air the cooking show Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 Pm, an hour earlier than last summer.
