If you're a fan of Metroidvania gameplay and masked Mexican wrestling, yet lack either a Ps or PSVita, then it must be driving you nuts that you haven't been able to give DrinkBox Studios Guacamelee! a spin. But all that changes on August 8th, when Guacamelee: Gold Edition arrives on Steam.
What exactly is the Gold Edition? Just the original game plus the Costume Pack and Devil's Playground Dlc, all baked in already. Plus you also get full Steam functionality, including achievements, leaderboards, cloud saving, and even Steam trading cards.
The new, all in one package will only set you back $15, though if you pick it up during its first week, not only do you get 10% off but Tales of Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, the studio's previous offering, totally free.
For those who aren't familiar with the original Psn release might want to check out our review for a few months back.

Who's that covered in all that blood? Oh, it's just Carrie. Again. If you're like us, you've been anxiously awaiting the trailer for the talent-packed (Julianne Moore! Chloe Grace Moretz!) remake of "Carrie." Brian De Palma's 1976, Sissy Spacek-starring horror flick (based on the Stephen King novel) may not have been perfect, but it certainly had enough going on (Piper Laurie's appropriately over-the-top performance, for one) to warrant the question How're you going to top that? Well, ladies and gentlemen, the trailer has dropped, and we finally have a real glimpse of the look, feel, and tone of Kimberly Peirce's ("Boys Don't Cry") modern-day stab at the story of a telekinetically-inclined high-school student with a mom who thinks puberty is the Devil's playground. Watch the trailer, take a moment, and decide: Are you excited for the reboot of "Carrie"?...

When I first heard the title of Lucy Walker's newest documentary, The Crash Reel, I immediately pictured something along the lines of Jackass. Of course, once I connected Walker's name to her impressive resume of previous documentaries (Countdown to Zero, Waste Land, Devil's Playground), I knew that The Crash Reel would not just be a compilation of snowboarding accidents -- or, if it was, then there would be an ulterior motive, the images would not just be for our amusement. Despite my awareness of the hype about The Crash Reel during Sundance, I somehow was able to avoid learning anything about the content of the documentary. This is a good thing because -- to be brutally honest -- I would have probably never seen The Crash Reel if I knew what it was actually about. Going into The Crash Reel completely cold (mind the pun) allowed me to ride...

A new documentary, Countdown to Zero, highlights the many reasons why nuclear annihilation remains our biggest threat
We never loved the bomb, but we did at least learn to stop worrying about it. According to new documentary Countdown to Zero, though, we shouldn't have. As Lucy Walker's film details, there's even more to worry about today: terrorists seeking to acquire nuclear materials, former Soviet countries trying to sell them, nuclear stockpiles, the club of nuclear-capable countries expanding to include states such as North Korea, Iran and Pakistan. Countdown to Zero has been described as the Inconvenient Truth of nukes, though judging by its terrifying revelations, our species is destined to destroy itself by nuclear means long before climate change gets a chance.
"Unfortunately, there's nothing I learned making this film that made me less worried," says Walker. Like most British children of the 1980s, she remembers what it was...

Genre mash ups are fun and ages old. Abbott and Costello met an abundance of ghouls, Old Mother Reilly ran into the likes of Count Dracula and once upon a time some chopper chicks rode into Zombietown. Now Jonathan Glendenning's latest film sees Strippers Vs. Werewolves. Sounds like great trashy horror comedy fun!
The British horror film sees top lad's mag model Lucy Pinder take up her debut role. Will she be playing a werewolf or a stripper?
Nope. She's playing a vampire bride, so you can stop those stripper jokes right now! The very lovely and beautiful Miss Pinder is clearly excited by the role, saying:
"I'm delighted to be making my feature film debut for Black & Blue Films in Strippers Vs Werewolves - it's a really funny part and a hilarious script and I can't wait to start.

Well, we have taken a look at the "Best of" on the domestic circuit, in relation to indie films. Now, let us go global to track down the best in international horror. This is a year where the vile was unleashed with the Human Centipede to the action oriented zombie film the Devil's Playground. This reviewer admits a weakness in the areas of Asian and Italian films, from abroad. If it is not Takashi Miike, then this movie lover has likely not heard of it. Giallo is another film genre that does not appeal here.
However, there were several good outings from Scandinavian countries like Dead Snow and French horror continues towards an apex with movies such as La Horde and High Lane. Some unreleased projects like the serial killer franchise Fritt Vilt 3 (Cold Prey 3) will be included in this list. So, sit back, relax and let this movie reviewer...

"The moment when one thing turns into another is the most beautiful moment. A combination of sounds turns into music. And that applies to everything." Vik Muniz What kind of filmmaker has the guts to follow climbers up Mt. Her name is Lucy Walker, and she's won prizes and awards for taking such brave risks. A few years ago, Lawrence Bender and Jeffrey Skoll set out to make a new documentary about nuclear weapons, a film which would act as a wake up call to the imperative of nuclear abolition, just as their last project, An Inconvenient Truth, galvanized public discourse--and action--surrounding climate change. Teamed up with policy expert Bruce Blair and Writer-Director Lucy Walker (Devil's Playground, Blindsight) they created the newly released Countdown to Zero, which unequivocally argues that, whether by accident, malicious intent of "terrorists" or as a result of failed diplomacy, nuclear weapons pose an unacceptable risk and must be eliminated. While scores of arms control and disarmament civil society groups are deeply inspired by the mass consciousness-raising and mobilization opportunity the film presents, many disarmament activists are vocally disappointed with the film. They are concerned that the film overemphasizes the hazard...

When the relatively big-budget documentaries An Inconvenient Truth and Food, Inc. (see my review here) were released, they were able to capitalize on the fact that there were already discussions and growing concerns about both climate change and our nation's dysfunctional food systems. Countdown to Zero, the new documentary produced by Lawrence Bender (who also produced An Inconvenient Truth) and directed by Lucy Walker (the Devil's Playground, Blindsight), faces the challenge of starting a conversation the nation currently isn't (but should be) having: how to eliminate the worsening threat of nuclear catastrophe caused by rogue states, accidents or terrorism. Why are nuclear weapons so far off our collective radars when they retain the potential to extinguish millions of lives -- if not all life on the planet -- in mere minutes? Probably because many people think we have this nuclear problem...

Can Al Gore's global warming documentary become shorthand for a genre? (The scareumentary?) That's what Participant Media's Jeffrey Skoll implied when introducing the new film "Countdown to Zero" at its New York premiere Wednesday night. He noted that they'd been in search of the next topic to do "'The Inconvenient Truth' of," and what we were about to watch was the result. "Countdown to Zero," in other words, aims to be "The Inconvenient Truth" of nuclear warfare. If you feel a little short on global concerns, it offers plenty to add to your plate.
Taking its structure from an excerpt from JFK's "nuclear sword of Damocles" speech to the U.N. in 1961, "Countdown to Zero" examines the various way we could arrive at nuclear annihilation via "accident, or miscalculation, or by madness." "Accident," as in the incidents when nuclear missiles were erroneously loaded onto bombers that then flew over the country,...

Steven Cantor is the founder and CEO of NYC-based Stick Figure Productions and has been behind such award-winning films as Willie Nelson: Still is Still Moving, What Remains: A Film About Sally Mann, and more. His film Devil's Playground will be playing as part of the Tribeca Cinema Doc Series on May 10, 2010. TribecaFilm.com: Please describe the story you tell in your film. What inspired you to tell that story? Steven Cantor: The film explores Rumspringa, wherein young Amish are given the opportunity to explore the "English" way of life. We track a few of these young people over the course of their experience. The film shows how difficult it is for them to break away from the church. Many of them "act out," exploring not just Nintendo and rock music, but alcohol, drugs, and sex. But almost all of them return to the church, as there is tremendous pressure,...

Of the 120 or so feature films that play at the Sundance Film Festival every year, only about half wind up being released in U.S. theaters. Another couple dozen premiere on cable, and a few more go straight to DVD -- though of course no one ever hears about them, since they were under-the-radar indies that didn't play theatrically. Such is life.
There's often a certain fairness to this, as it's often the mediocre or bad films that get swept into oblivion. But sometimes good movies get this treatment, too, worthy flicks that just couldn't attract a theatrical distributor but did manage to make it to DVD. I've been keeping track of these titles over the years, and here are seven of them. They never played on the silver screen outside of film festivals, but you can find them all on small silver discs through Amazon and Netflix.

A zombie armageddon has spread across the globe and some survivors go for a mythical safe haven in the upcoming Devil's Playground which stars Vinnie Jones among others, and we're pretty excited about it. You can read our previous post here for a full synopsis.
Lucky us we got a couple pieces of concept art on the zombies on the film, and yes, they are "agile", so presumably that means fast. In writer/director Bart Ruspoli's own words: "With regards to our zombies in Devil’s Playground we wanted to do something different. Andrew Gunn will be directing Devil's Playground based on a script by Bart Ruspoli (an actor in Band of Brothers and Rome) and the film will be produced by Jonathan Sothcott who clearly has the most experience out of the three. Even as such, some big names are attached: Did I say Vinnie Jones? This'll be the second post apocalyptic film he's in by my count, the first being Tooth & Nail. Here's what producer Sothcott had to say about the film:

Amish reality show on UPN 2004 agenda
UPN closed out the Television Critics Assn. winter press tour on Sunday with one of the more out-there reality program announcements of the three dozen or so broadcast and cable networks that were presented during the two-week junket at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel. Amish in the City, as the project has been dubbed internally at the network (but not on-air, executives assure) aims to follow five Amish teens as they experience their culture's traditional rite of Rumspringa, UPN entertainment president Dawn Ostroff said. The ritual calls for young Amish adults to leave insulated Pennsylvania Dutch communities to explore the outside world and discover whether they want to commit to the Amish way of life. It was the subject of the 2002 documentary Devil's Playground, and its producers Daniel Laikind and Steven Canton, are executive producing the reality series for New Line Television along with Amazing Race alumnus Jon Kroll.
