Similar to France’s New Extremity, Australia experienced its own significant genre resurgence in the 2000s. Most agree the Land Down Under’s golden days of filmmaking began in the ’70s and then drew to a close around the late ‘80s. This period, better known as the Australian New Wave, soared to new heights after the government issued substantial support for the arts. After a steep decline in the ‘90s, though, homegrown horror made a slow but noticeable comeback in the early 21st century. And no other movie from that era is more responsible for bringing Australia back into the conversation than 2005’s bleak and stylish Wolf Creek.
It wouldn’t be a mid-2000s horror movie without the practically mandatory and hyperbolic “based on true events” promotion. In this case, though, Wolf Creek is indeed inspired by a ripped-from-the-headlines true crime. Several, in fact. Ivan Milat, who died in...

Many producers fear the Federal Government’s sweeping media reforms will spell the death knell of Australian features, forcing them and some writers and directors to focus on content for streamers or free-to-air broadcasters.
Lowering the Producer Offset for films to 30 per cent from July 2021 will leave a gap of at least 25 per cent of the budgets which most producers will find impossible to fill, according to producer/distributor Sue Maslin.

Posie Graeme-Evans, co-creator of the Nine Network drama McLeod’s Daughters, is working on a feature film spin-off with producer Sue Clothier and screenwriter Emma Jensen.
Screen Tasmania is funding the early development of McLeods of Drovers Run, scripted by Jensen and produced by Graeme-Evans and Clothier.
Based on an origin story by Graeme-Evans, the plot sees tragic, unfinished business that begins in 1850s Scotland at the ancestral home of the McLeods return to haunt the present day family.
The logline reads: “In the end, family is all we have when the past will not die. That’s a good thing. Right?”
Graeme-Evans is convinced there is still a huge appetite for the McLeod’s franchise. Currently screening on Stan, the series won the Meaa’s The Great Australian Binge vote for Australia’s most favourite show.

Fin Edquist.
Fin Edquist is perhaps best known for animated adventures aimed at children and families – but the screenwriter finds equal satisfaction in creating adult-themed dramas.
Reflecting that diversity, his upcoming slate includes an Alice Springs-set series to be produced by Brindle Films’ Rachel Clements; a feature film spin-off of On the Edge, a planned TV animated children’s series; and a dark thriller/horror.
“My natural inclination is to the darker stuff,” says Edquist, whose writing credits include McLeod’s Daughters and House Husbands; he also co-created The Secret Daughter with Sam Meikle, Justin Monjo and Kristen Dunphy but didn’t get the chance to work on the Screentime/Seven Network show.
“The kids stuff is something I discovered later on in my career. I enjoy them equally and am glad I can work in both. They present different challenges and requirements and different forms of escape.
“I have four children.

It's with a great sense of disbelief - a feeling I know is shared by many in our industry still reeling from the passing of Jeff Truman - that I solemnly inform Awg members that we have lost the significant talents of James Walker from our screens.
A bright and sharp-minded contributor to Australian scriptwriting for more than a decade, James - at the youthful age of 41 years, husband and father of two young boys - succumbed to a diabetic coma on 11 January and was tragically unable to recover. He passed away peacefully on 20 January, surrounded by family.
A boy from Perth, James' talent was noticed early; he was singled out via a competition and sent to La for an experience that cemented his intention to become a writer. In various roles - including Script Editor, Script Producer and freelance writer - James worked on many of our fine dramas,...

The shows you get out of Lifetime can be pretty hit or miss. That's generally a good thing as far as I'm concerned. You either love Drop Dead Diva, or you hate it, and I for one appreciate the "not for everyone" approach to show design. It's a recipe that gets trickier when you're venturing out into the massively overpopulated world of crime shows though, and Lifetime's new efforts, The Protector and Against the Wall, are faced with a tough road with genre norms butting heads against network image.
Shows focusing on cops and/or crime aren't well-suited to flights of fancy, or niche shtick, like several of Lifetime's other working models, and when people think Lifetime, a network that's going to suck in crime show fans is not exactly what leaps to mind.
I'm still not convinced by Lifetime's effort at balancing things with The Protector.

Production is set to commence in the south-west region of Western Australia next week on the surfing feature Drift, which will see Sam Worthington play a travelling surf photographer, and Xavier Samuel (Twlight Eclipse, The Loved Ones) and Myles Pollard (Wolverine, McLeod's Daughters) play surfer brothers. Set in seventies Australia, the film is inspired by the true story of Australia's legendary surf communities and the rise of the global surf brands during this era. It follows the surf-obsessed Kelly brothers who, out of necessity, launch a backyard surf business - re-thinking board design, crafting homemade wetsuits and selling merchandise out of their van, which eventually sees the creation of a hit global brand.

More dwarf glamour shots have emerged from "The Hobbit" today, the third such shot with each containing a different mix of actors. Last week we had one English stage actor/performer and four New Zealand film, TV and stage actors. Today MSN has revealed a photo featuring two younger actors that genre fans may be more familiar with.
Arguably the 'hunkiest' of the dwarf actors, aside from Richard Armitage of course, the pair consists of Auckland-born actor Dean O'Gorman (who resembles my good mate Adam) as Fili and Irish actor Aidan Turner as Kili.
34-year-old O'Gorman, who replaced Brit actor Rob Kazinsky who left the project in April, has appeared on numerous TV productions shot in Australia and New Zealand including "Shortland Street," "Xena: Warrior Princess," "Farscape," "McLeod's Daughters," "Legend of the Seeker" and "Hercules".

But it was a recurring role as Detective Peter Baker in the long-running Aussie Soap "Home and Away" that brought him the profile and press which led to his casting in Warner/Fox's short-lived "Past Lives." This season he's starring opposite Dana Delany in NBC's "Body of Proof" as former cop-turned-medical examiner.
>> Rose Byrne, "Damages"
Byrne must rate as the busiest Aussie working in Hollywood. She's currently filming "X-Men: First Class," recently completed the Judd Apatow-produced comedy "Bridesmaids" and stars opposite Patrick Wilson in "Insidious,...

Aussie hunk Dustin Clare ("McLeod's Daughters," "Underbelly," "Satisfaction") has scored the major new role in "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena", the upcoming prequel to the recent first season of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" reports The Live Feed.
In the six episode prequel, Batiatus (John Hannah) is not yet the head of his family or of the gladiator training school.
Clare plays Gannicus, the lead gladiator in the Ludus. However the House of Batiatus hasn't earned social respect or the right for its gladiators to fight in championship bouts as yet. Gannicus struggles to turn around the House's luck.
Joining him will be Jaime Murray ("Dexter," "Warehouse 13," "Hustle") as a Capua social climber and Marisa Ramirez ("General Hospital") as a slave girl. As previously reported, Spartacus himself Andy Whitfield will make a brief appearance towards the end of the prequel series.
Production on the series kicks off next month for airing in January.

A&E is taking another stab at original scripted programming -- emphasis on "stab."
The cable channel's new series "The Glades," which premieres at 10 p.m. Et Sunday (July 11), sets its crime-solving antics at the edge of the Florida Everglades. That's where Chicago cop Jim Longworth (Matt Passmore, "McLeod's Daughters") winds up after being accused -- falsely! -- of sleeping with his captain's wife and being exiled from the department.
His skills, if not his prickly personality, come in handy in his new home of Palm Glade, Fla., whose sleepy exterior masks a rather high murder rate. The cases will drive the plot each week, but A&E promises that the show will also include healthy amounts of time away from the crime scene as Jim pursues a single mom and med student (Kiele Sanchez, "Lost").
The show, which films on location in Florida and Georgia, also stars Michelle Hurd,...

Ah, the glamorous life of a television star. The long days, the blistering heat and humidity, the luxury foldout couches in your trailer ...
Yes, working on a show can involve long hours in less-than-perfect conditions, but the stars of A&E's new drama "The Glades" don't seem to mind too much. In the clip below, which Zap2it has first, Kiele Sanchez and Matt Passmore take you on a brief tour of their life on set (the show films on locations in Florida and Georgia).
And if you keep your eyes peeled, you'll even see a slightly embarrassed Sanchez hide one of her bras that she'd apparently forgotten to clean up before letting the camera into her trailer.
"The Glades" stars Australian actor Passmore ("McLeod's Daughters," "Underbelly") as Jim Longworth, a Chicago cop who's exiled from the department and lands in a seemingly sleepy town on the edge of the Everglades in Florida.
