Shobhana has huge eyes who do most of the talking . Thilakan is the head of a big family .
His first son had eloped and married an Anglo Indian ( Y Vijaya in a small role ) and shifted to Mumbai . Now that the son is dead , his only daughter , Shobhana is coming to visit them and probably live with them . Each one reacts in a different manner in that big house hold when they come to know this . Lalitha his first daughter is all worried about family property being split . Mohanlal is a vestige in that house despite being related to the family . He does bits and bobs .
Lalitha is a dominating wife and mother. He own 5 year old daughter often gets fits due to being neglected .
Another daughter Rohini is in love with some one from other caste . She keeps meeting him on the sly .
In this big bustling household , walks Shobhana with just one suitcase .
Each one has their expectations and fears about her .Very soon she starts integrating within the family despite some opposition and suspicion from Lalitha and Rohini .
She keeps meeting Mohanlal often and they start understanding each other . He often supports her when some one chides her for whatever silly reason .
Misunderstandings and mutual jealousy starts melting between themselves.
Thilakan is a quite party to all this .
She is also very sad that her mother had gotten married to another Anglo Indian and they want her back .
She had actually run away from all that wanting shelter from a traditional family .
Slowly the family start liking her . Thilakan accepts her as his grand daughter and much to her happiness , he distributes family sarees and jewels to her .
Lalitha and Rohini come through and they start talking about her marriage with Mohanlal.
Sadly in the final scene , her parents come and want her back . Thilakan helplessly watches as Y Vijaya abuses him . He had rejected her as his daughter in law a few decades back .
Unable to take all this , in the final scene, Shobhana wears all new jewels in her traditional attire and commits suicide .
A poignant ending .
