Originally a thirteen-episode series, positive fan response internationally resulted in a second season co-produced by Cartoon Network, Sunrise, and Bandai Visual. The full 26-episode series re-aired from the beginning starting October 1, 2002 in Japan.
The opening credits with a "radioactive liquid" background with black silhouettes is based on the opening credits of the Japanese sci-fi TV classic, Ultraseven (1967) (considered the best of the Ultra Series by fans).
The opening theme "Big-O!" by Rui Nagai is heavily inspired by Queen's "Flash!" from the 1980 film Flash Gordon.
This show came into existence after model designs of mecha action figures for a proposed toy line were made.
