Nowadays films with extraordinary stories are becoming hugely popular with the audience. Movies like Ship of Theseus and The Lunch Box have been credited for not only being critically acclaimed but also commercially successful.
People in the movie business feel that today masala movies and unconventional films are co-existing and it is a very good sign for cine business.
“The Indian audience is extremely intelligent. They are mature and capable of handling anything. At a time when Dabangg became a hit, Tanu Weds Manu was a hit as well,” said actor R. Madhavan reports Ians.
Trade analyst Komal Nahta pointed out that cinemas, multiplexes and business models are changing. All kinds of films run because there are small-capacity multiplexes and one thousand people are not needed to fill up a show.
“The audience wants to see good films. That is what makes them do well. People are opening out because...

A behind the scenes look into the contemporary world of Bollywood movies and Bollywood stars. What?s hot, what?s not; how things work and who are the people pushing the buttons that make it work.–Udita Jhunjhunwala
The last few years have seen a surge in independent films with modest budgets and actors, as opposed to stars, in their cast making waves in Bollywood. Examples would stretch back to Khosla Ka Ghosla and forwards to Love, Sex Aur Dhokha, Udaan and last month?s release Shor in the City.
Shor in the City
The constrained budget of these films leaves limited resources for publicity and promotions. The producers certainly do not have surplus funds to ?buy? media and thereby influence public opinion. Over the last few years the trend has been for the directors and producers of these films to host multiple private screenings of their films weeks before release.

It's only the story and the script that decides the fate of a movie at the ticket window, feels actor R. Madhavan, adding that the spate of small budget films that did well did so because of a good story line. 'I think it's just a coincidence that all the films that did well were small budget films. But no one is saying that all those films were also great stories or they were also great cinemas. If the big films had good stories, they would have worked as much as the small films have,' Madhavan told Ians in an interview. He feels some stories don't need big budget. ''Udaan' is meant only to be made at Rs.3 crore budget. You cannot make 'Udaan' for Rs.30 crore and expect to recover Rs.35 crore even if Shah Rukh Khan did it. It's meant, made, positioned correctly,...
