Phil Vischer envisioned this as one of the last (if not _the_ last) half-hour VeggieTales videos, as he pushed the company towards feature-film production. As a result, everything in this video pushed the envelope far beyond what any previous video had done - from the high-end background paintings, to the 85-voice mens' choir and string section soundtrack. Unfortunately, the first feature film (Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie (2002)) failed to return its significant investment and bankrupted the company, which was bought in 2003 and continues to produce the half-hour format shows.
Because the Larry-Boy videos are intentionally more intense than a typical VeggieTales video, Phil Vischer considered dropping the VeggieTales name from this episode.
After having received some negative feedback on the lack of female characters in VeggieTales: Larry-Boy! & the Fib from Outer Space! (1997), it was decided that the next villain would be female. Thus, the rumor weed's personality was based on Joan Rivers, and inspired by her trademark "Can We Talk?" line. The studio then received flak on stereotyping, because the "gossipy" character was female.

The theater at the beginning of the episode is located at the corner of Vischer and Nawrocki streets (named after VeggieTales creators Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki).
