Thomas Vinterberg, the Oscar-winning Danish director of “Another Round,” will preside over the jury of the upcoming Marrakech International Film Festival, with which he has a longstanding rapport.
The Marrakech jury will award its Étoile d’Or to one of the 14 first and second films in the fest’s international competition. Recent winners include Moroccan director Asmae El Moudir’s “Mother of all the Lies” last year and French-Iranian helmer Emad Aleebrahim-Dehkordi’s “A Tale of Shemroon” in 2022.
It will mark the first time that Vinterberg attends the Marrakech Film Festival. The Danish filmmaker is one of Europe’s best known directors. He co-founder with Lars von Trier of the Danish Dogme 95 movement in the mid 1990s. His vast and widely praised filmography comprises “The Celebration,” aka “Festen,” (1998) for which Vinterberg won the Cannes jury prize when he was 28; “It’s All About Love (2003)”; “Dear Wendy” (2005); “When a Man Comes Home...

Oscar-winning Danish director Thomas Vinterberg has been announced as president of the jury at the 21st Marrakech International Film Festival, running from November 29 to December 7.
The jury awards the Étoile d’Or to one of the 14 first and second films in the international competition, recent winners of which have included Asmae El Moudir’s Mother of all the Lies (2023) and Emad Aleebrahim-Dehkordi’s A Tale Of Shemroon (2022),
“In this rapidly changing and increasingly divided world, festivals such as Marrakech provide a much-needed window into a wide variety of cultures,” said Vinterberg. “Films can describe what cannot be explained. Make us understand the unacceptable. And there is indeed a lot to understand right now.”
Marrakech has strong connections with the Danish cinema world. Last year it celebrated longtime Vinterberg collaborator Mads Mikkelsen with an honorary career achievement award. He spoke fondly of his connection with the director in his masterclass.

While the issue of refugees and economic migrants continues to dominate world headlines, Denmark’s Thomas Vinterberg has found an ingenious way to turn the situation on its head. With his seven-part series Families Like Ours, Vinterberg posits an imagined but not too far-fetched scenario in which his homeland is forced, literally, to close down. Flooding is coming, but, rather than wait, the government has been cooking up a plan to rehouse those who don’t have the resources to flee to Europe’s wealthier countries.
Drawing on the realistic but empathetic style shown in films such as Festen, It’s All About Love and Another Round, for which he won an Oscar, Vinterberg casts his eye over a handful of protagonists caught up in the madness. At the center is Amaryllis August as Laura, a high-school girl who is experiencing the first bloom of love when the story breaks, forcing...

February––particularly its third week––is all about romance. Accordingly the Criterion Channel got creative with their monthly programming and, in a few weeks, will debut Interdimensional Romance, a series of films wherein “passion conquers time and space, age and memory, and even death and the afterlife.” For every title you might’ve guessed there’s a wilder companion: Alan Rudolph’s Made In Heaven, Soderbergh’s remake, and Resnais’ Love Unto Death. Mostly I’m excited to revisit Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth Without Youth, a likely essential viewing before Megalopolis.
February also marks Black History Month, and Criterion’s series will include work by Shirley Clarke (also subject of a standalone series), Garrett Bradley, Cheryl Dunye, and Julie Dash, while movies by Sirk, Minnelli, King Vidor, and Lang play in “Gothic Noir.” Greta Gerwig gets an “Adventures in Moviegoing” and can be seen in Mary Bronstein’s Yeast,...

A disparate group of characters collide in Dry (Siccita), a semi-apocalyptic drama premiering out of competition at the Venice Film Festival. Paolo Virzi directs this glossy portmanteau film that assembles a strong cast for overlapping storylines and satirical social comment.
The setting is urban Rome, where it hasn’t rained for three years. The drought has become a political issue, with commentators queueing up to offer theories and to point the finger of blame. The social divide is increasing, with wealthy citizens finding a way around the water shortage, while others go thirsty. Hospitals are overloaded with patients, many suffering from lethargy, and apparently related to an influx of cockroaches.
There’s clearly an environmental issue here, but most people we encounter are too self-involved to think about that. The drought is the backdrop to their stories, and the impact of it puts their issues into sharp focus.

Even in a world as volatile as the film industry, Thomas Vinterberg has had some serious ups and downs. After becoming the toast of Cannes in 1998 with his Dogme film Festen, the Danish director fell sharply from grace with the follow-up It’s All About Love and endured several commercial flops before returning to favor with his provocative 2012 Oscar nominee The Hunt. His latest, the drinking drama Another Round, could have set him back to square one—as shooting began, his teenage daughter died in a car crash, and its Cannes premiere was scuppered by the Covid-19 pandemic—but somehow it prevailed, sweeping festival prizes across the globe and bringing Vinterberg back to the Oscar conversation.
Deadline: What do the Oscars mean to you?
Thomas Vinterberg: Since my childhood it has been a dream, like a kind of phantom. I’ve been catching myself doing Oscar speeches—like, when I’m in the bathroom.

Paris Hilton just outdid herself! The former "Simple Life" star just dropped her new music video for "Come Alive," and it's so good ... in a completely ridiculous way. Danish director Thomas Vinterberg is known for co-founding Denmark's Dogme movement, best expressed in his film "A Celebration," which wowed Cannes in 1998. After a journey of creative risk-taking with English-language films "It's All About Love" and "Dear Wendy," Vinterberg returned home for a major comeback with "The Hunt," cowritten by Tobias Lindholm ("A Hijacking"), which earned Mads Mikkelsen the Best Actor prize at Cannes in 2012 and was a hit in Denmark, which submitted it this year as its official Oscar entry. If the Best Actor category weren't so intensely competitive, Mikkelsen would have a strong chance at a nomination for his penetrating portrayal of a decent school teacher whose life is shattered when he is falsely accused of being a pedophile. One spreading lie throws his community into a state of hysteria as his friends ostracize him and the teacher fights back against the witch-hunt alone. "Suddenly this kind, lovely civilized man.

After landing on cinephile radars with 1998's "The Celebration," Thomas Vinterberg went on a weird and wild cinematic journey. From pictures that didn't or barely got a release stateside, to disappointments like "Dear Wendy" or "It's All About Love," Vinterberg failed to match the acclaim of his Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize-winning film. That's until this year's "The Hunt," the gripping tale of community persecution that earned rave reviews, and more Cannes awards (an Ecumenical Jury Prize for Vinterberg, a Best Actor trophy for Mads Mikkelsen). And the helmer isn't wasting a moment riding that momentum. Last month production started on his star studded adaptation of Thomas Hardy's "Far From The Madding Crowd," and today Empire brings us the official first images from the movie, and yes, we will buy all the tickets. Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Juno Temple, Michael Sheen and Tom Sturridge, the movie tells the tale...

After a summer of tension, the "Suits" Season 3 summer finale, "Stay," came **this close to a happy ending. It's too bad Louis Litt had to go ruin it all by peeking into the Harvard Law School student records and finding no Mike Ross there.
Is Louis about to learn Mike's secret?
The return of Travis Tanner
Just when you thought the law couldn't get any murkier or messier, enter Travis Tanner! Yes, Harvey's old nemesis is back yet again, this time in the employ of Ava Hessington in order to sue Pearson Darby Specter.
Mostly, of course, this lawsuit is about angering Harvey. It works.
Tanner plays as dirty as always and tries to go at Harvey via Scottie -- Stephen Huntley has gone and signed an affidavit saying that she knew all about his murderous ways ages ago. It's a lie, but Huntley is looking at a murder charge...

A Danish allegory about a man falsely accused of pedophilia (the dashing, quietly charismatic Mads Mikkelsen) and the town that turns against him, Thomas Vinterberg's The Hunt was one of the most divisive works screened at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. Odd, since there's nothing worthy of love or hate in this capably made but underwhelming movie. Vinterberg—with compatriot Lars von Trier—founded the Dogme 95 movement (that charter of dos and don'ts intended to purify big-screen realism), and his first effort, The Celebration, was a watchable jolt of family dysfunction. Since then, the director has made two far shakier U.S.-set films: the dreadful anti-gun parable Dear Wendy and an endearingly inept futuristic noir-romance, It's All About Love (s...

From Purdey to Patsy, Joanna Lumley has had her fair share of plum roles. But the one she's most proud of is as a champion for social justice. Lucy Siegle meets the Observer Ethical Awards' 2013 national campaigner of the year
Joanna Lumley treats the lecture hall of the Royal Geographical Society (Rgs) with a charming degree of reverence. Walking past the hallowed Ondaatje Theatre, which has hosted talks by famous scientists and explorers since 1930, we pop in to pay our respects. Lumley, a fellow of the Rgs herself, gave a lecture here on her return from a trip to Bhutan in 2008. "Terrifying," she says in a stage whisper. "Imagine the people, the explorers, the brains that have been associated with this organisation. Shackleton, for example."
Some 35 years before Lumley took to the lectern, her grandmother also addressed the Rgs. She was Danish but born in New Zealand and married Lumley's Scottish grandfather in Rangoon.

Festen director Thomas Vinterberg storms back to form with this drama about a teacher wrongfully accused of child abuse
As the nation recovers from its Newsnight affair, there could hardly be a more relevant movie than this new one from 43-year-old Danish director Thomas Vinterberg about a wrongful accusation of child abuse. Vinterberg has created a drama-thriller with the atmospheric grip of a horror film; there are echoes of Arthur Miller's The Crucible, Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs and Lars von Trier's Dogville, but the film has its own exemplary power, maturity and intelligence. To see The Hunt is to be reminded of our own recent history: we watched as a flagship news programme suffered a spasm of misjudgment that could have been avoided with a Google image search, and as a TV interviewer solemnly handed to the prime minister his piece of paper, apparently under the impression...

On the surface, the "New Girl" episode, "Eggs," is a light and silly romp through sex jokes and occasional drunkenness. The result is an impressively cohesive and occasionally hilarious sitcom.
You wouldn't expect seriousness to sneak in there. It does. Underlying all that humor is a dark truth that most of us have to face at some point in our early 30s: That moment when you realize that you do not, in fact, have all the time in the world. The moment when you are an adult.
Eggs aren't much good without sausage
Thanks to a rather graphic dinner party, everyone is suddenly slammed in the face with a disturbing fact of womanhood -- those eggs don't last. And time may be running out for girls like Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and CeCe (Hannah Simone). They have reached their early 30s and still are in no position to have children.
Uh oh.

After the success of Festen in 1998 Thomas Vinterberg suffered a painful fall from grace. Now he has completed The Hunt – and it's just as shocking
Way back in the 1970s, before he became a film-maker and travelled the world, Thomas Vinterberg was just a little kid on a Danish commune, a naked infant amid a herd of naked adults. He sets the scene with gusto. Genitals here and genitals there; children climbing on to undressed laps; the whole place full of generosity and love. In third grade the kids demanded a sex education class and their teacher Olin ("half-pissed, a lovely guy") duly obliged by pulling down his pants. "Today he'd get 15 years in prison," marvels Vinterberg. "He would never work again."
The director – now a handsome, hearty 43 – makes no bones about pining for the commune; of feeling bounced out of Eden and adrift in a constraining modern age. One...

Thomas Vinterberg has certainly been on an interesting journey since breaking out with "Festen" nearly fifteen years ago. While that film put him on the map, he struggled to follow it up, with audience and critical indifference meeting subsequent efforts like "Dear Wendy," "It's All About Love" and "Submarino." But this spring, Vinterberg once again wowed Cannes with "The Hunt," a searing drama starring Mads Mikkelsen (who took home Best Actor) as a man wrongfully accused of sexually abusing a young girl. And it hasn't taken the director long to leverage that success into a potentially exciting new project. Vinterberg is in talks to direct an adaptation of Thomas Hardy's famed "Far From The Madding Crowd." No stranger to adapting classic literature, David Nicholls (the Ralph Fiennes/Helena Bonham Carter "Great Expectations" and the 2008 Brit TV mini-series "Tess of the...

One of the biggest surprises in the Cannes lineup was the return of Dogme 95 co-founder and Lars von Trier cohort Thomas Vinterberg. Not only because his partner-in-crime was handed a persona non grata last year, but also because the helmer has more or less failed to live up to his first Dogme work, "Festen," despite high-profile efforts such as "It's All About Love" starring Joaquin Phoenix, Sean Penn and Claire Danes. But Vinterberg's new film indeed looks promising.
The first images have now been unveiled (via Flix) for "The Hunt," which excitingly teams him with Mads Mikkelsen for a drama set in a small Danish village around Christmas. Scripted by Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm, the story itself follows Lucas, who is accused of a crime he did not commit and must fight to get his life back on track. Here's the synopsis:

Early this morning brought one of the most anticipated moments in the cinephile's calendar: the announcement of the line-up of this year's installment of the Cannes Film Festival. And while it reads in places like a parody of a Cannes line-up (Alain Resnais! Abbas Kiarostami! Michael Haneke! Ken Loach!) there's no doubt that we're excited about all of those films, as well as new ones from David Cronenberg, Jacques Audiard, Walter Salles and many, many others.
Much of the line-up had been widely predicted by Cannes-watchers (even that April Fool's Day prank ended up getting 18 films right), but nevertheless, there were a few surprises, as well as a few major absences, either expected ones or more eyebrow-raising ones. Some Cannes favorites we've known weren't coming for a while: Woody Allen's "To Rome With Love" opens tomorrow in Italy and wasn't thought to be at Cannes, while neither Wong Kar-Wai...

Photo: Cannes Film Festival Update: The full line-up is now available right here. We are now less than 24 hours away from the official 2012 Cannes Film Festival line-up announcement and I have to admit, my excitement for what may come is hitting overload. As much as the Toronto Film Festival has come to be the place where several films begin their Oscar run, there simply is nothing better than the international cinematic prestige of attending the Cannes Film Festival each year and this will mark my third year attending. With that in mind, late last night I added an additional nine films to the RopeofSilicon database that have the potential of being named during tomorrow's (April 19) announcement, which should come sometime around 2 or 3 Am Pst. After doing so I felt it wouldn't hurt to take one last look at what films have the strongest chance of showing up at the festival this year.

Swift, who has admitted to writing about her ex-boyfriends, finds relationships to be her greatest inspiration. "Forever & Always" was directed at ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas, who reportedly broke up with her via text message. Looking back at 2011 on what films moved and impressed us it becomes more and more clear—to me at least—that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, our end of year poll, now an annual tradition, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2011—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2011 to create a unique double feature. Many contributors chose their favorites of 2011, some picked out-of-the-way gems, others made some pretty strange connections—and some frankly just want to create a kerfuffle. All the contributors were asked to write a paragraph explaining their 2011 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative...

Considering that he co-founded the Dogme movement, and made the best of its films, in "Festen" (or "The Celebration"), a picture that's proved highly influential across the last decade-and-a-half or so (David Fincher seems to be a fan, as there are certainly echoes of the film in the trailer for "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo"), it's disappointing that Thomas Vinterberg's career has proceeded in fits and starts ever since. It took him five years to follow-up "Festen," and that sophomore picture, the ambitious, but misshapen "It's All About Love," with Joaquin Phoenix, Claire Danes and Sean Penn, was critically…...

Shot days before she launched the UK leg of her Loud tour, Rihanna filmed the video in the Belfast, Ireland, and in a behind-the-scenes video she describes it as "the perfect treatment for this song."
Directed by Melina Matsoukas, who shot the clips for "Hard," "S&M," "Rude Boy" and "Rockstar 101," the always-feisty Rihanna added, "We have similar styles, similar tastes."
The video features scenes of a big dance party in a field, solo shots of Rihanna looking Gorg in the same field and things even get a little Nsfw when Rihanna takes off her top and proclaims “We’re about to f**k on a tractor!... Critically panned in Cannes. Shut out from North American premieres in Toronto and Telluride, it appeared as if Paolo Sorrentino's This Must Be the Place wouldn't find a festival tent let alone a distrib home in the U.S. but an unlikely candidate in the Weinstein Co. have grabbed the rights. Already scratching their heads on how to handle the release for Madonna's sophomore film, My Week with Marilyn and The Details, TWC probably recieved the Italian/French/Irish co-prod at a deep discount, and more than likely slated for a release in 2012, the pic will next be presented to critics at the London Film Festival. Gist: Co-written by Sorrentino and Umberto Contarello, this is about Cheyenne, a wealthy former rock star (Sean Penn), now bored and listless in his retirement embarks on a quest to find his father’s persecutor, an ex-Nazi war criminal now hiding out in the U.

Lars von Trier's Cannes slating calls to mind the fate of his fellow Danish film-maker, who likewise fell abruptly from critical grace
And so this year's Cannes turned out to be a tale of two Danes. Engulfed in acclaim was Nicolas Winding Refn, the longtime wunderkind now making good on his youthful promise to claim the award for best director with his arthouse noir Drive. Drowned in opprobrium, of course, was Lars von Trier – about whom too much has surely already been written but who, however absurdly, emerged as the chief talking point of the whole shebang. The two even shared a public spat to further hog the attention.
All of which put me in mind of a third Danish film-maker, technically absent from the festivities but lurking in the background like a Scandinavian Marley's ghost – the spectral figure of Thomas Vinterberg. Because not so very long ago it...

Previously, in 1992, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tim Burton teamed up for "Batman Returns" where the actress memorably played Catwoman. Now, the Hollywood Reporter is saying that Pfeiffer is in negotiations to return to the loving arms of the director for the big screen version of "Dark Shadows."
Based on the 1960s gothic vampire TV soap opera, the new version stars Johnny Depp as Barnaby Collins, a vampire living in Maine who is searching for his lost love.
The role Pfeiffer is in talks to play is Elizabeth Collins Stodard, the matriarch of the Collins family. She has an interesting arch -- she's reclusive, hidden in the Maine mansion since her husband disappeared a decade earlier.
It's all about love...and vampires...and werewolves. Hhhmmmm, echoes of "Twilight" anyone?
Burton is targeting an April start date and joining the cast are Jackie Earle Haley, Eva Green, and Bella Heathcote.

He's no longer Livin' La Vida Loca -- in fact, Ricky Martin is very happy with who he is, and how it's helping others.
The Puerto Rican singer, who announced that he was gay in May, opened up about his sexuality and how it's inspiring people across the world in a new interview with Parade Magazine.
"The other day, I was in a store and there was this 13-year-old child who he told me, 'Ricky, you and me, we are the same! You like boys. Well, you know what? Me too! And this is my mom and she's happy with me today.' Are you kidding me? I had to give him a hug and I had to give his mother a hug because unfortunately -- because of society or faith -- parents struggle. It's all about love."
And it wasn't just an isolated incident -- Martin gets thanks from people all over.

Problematic, directionlessness or just plain nonsensical – here are the inexplicable arthouse films you love to hate
@DrGiggles Without a doubt Primer is the most obtuse film I've ever seen – it was as entertaining as reading a book on advanced calculus.
@SladeKincald For me it has to be Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man. Love it, no idea what it's about. Death, maybe?
@dothestrand Andrzej Zulawski's Possession … Isabelle Adjani's Cannes-winning performance was described by Time Out as like that of a rabies victim. Wonderful film, though.
@DrJackDevlin Pirates of the Caribbean III. Completely baffling. Radical stuff.
@DrTumnus Thomas Vinterberg's It's All About Love reeks of folly, but I find it oddly compelling: glistening in the memory bank are Sean Penn literally phoning in his performance from an orbiting jumbo jet and an ice rink full of dead clones. Fab.

Shakespearean actor who played many familiar roles on film and television
Few actors can claim to have played most of Shakespeare's clowns and made some of them funny, but Geoffrey Hutchings, who has died of meningitis aged 71, did just that. An associate artist with the Royal Shakespeare Company, he played Launce, Bottom, Feste, one of the Dromios and even the impossible Lavache in Trevor Nunn's great "Crimean war" All's Well That Ends Well, with Peggy Ashcroft making her RSC farewell as the Countess of Rousillon. Hutchings brought an individual quality of asperity and crackle to everything he did, and was noted early on as a character actor of uncommon personality: small, slight, but always ferocious, he was like a terrier with a dangerous bark.
He grasped Autolycus, for instance, that wandering snapper-up of unconsidered trifles, in Ronald Eyre's 1981 The Winter's Tale at Stratford-upon-Avon, and transformed him into a...

Vanessa Paradis has revealed the secret to her and Johnny Depp's great relationship, time apart. The French actress-and-singer, who has been dating the "Alice in Wonderland" actor since 1998, truly believes that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and says the couple appreciate the time they do have together when they are not busy working.
"The fact that we're not together every day plays a big part in keeping our relationship stable," she said. "And then we also have a lot of respect and admiration for each other. We understand that if we want our relationship to continue, we must give each other space, allow each other to go off on our own and trust each other."
Vanessa, who has two children, Lily-Rose, 11, and Jack, 8, with Johnny, also revealed the 47-year-old Hollywood star "sums up romantic" and says he is he most wonderful man. The 37-year-old beauty added in the...

Dizzee Rascal has insisted that he is calmer now than during his teenage years. The rapper claimed that his 2003 debut Boy In Da Corner was an "angry" record, whereas he now just wants to make people happy. "I'm not an angry 16-year-old anymore. I just want to make people dance and feel good now. It's all about love. Love for your family, love for your girlfriend, love for what you do," he told the Daily Star. "In order to make Boy In Da Corner you have to be in a certain place. And it's not a good place." Rascal claimed that his debut, which scooped the Mercury music prize in 2003, was a breakthrough success because it represented (more)...
