Adam Sandler is back with a whole show full of fresh tunes. But are any of them worthy of an animated movie adaptation, à la “The Chanukah Song”?
Well, probably not, in no small part because Eight Crazy Nights bombed so hard that The Sandman has exclusively stuck to Halloween for his holiday movies in the decades since. However, Sandler’s newest Netflix stand-up special, Adam Sandler: Love You, is filled with plenty of new ditties to leave audiences laughing and humming even after the credits roll.
The most talked-about tune of Sandler’s last stand-up special, the 2018 show Adam Sandler: 100 Percent Fresh, was, undoubtedly, Sandler’s unexpected memorial anthem for his dearly departed friend and fellow Saturday Night Live legend Chris Farley. Though Sandler again closed Love You with a heartfelt, serious song about comedy legends, this time around, the finale was far from the finest tune Sandler sung that evening,...

When Adam Sandler made his television debut as Stud Boy and the Trivia Delinquent on MTV's influential game show "Remote Control," he did not exude an all-ages appeal. He was an unassuming goofball: funny, yes, but in a dorky way that augured a career as, at best, a supporting comedic performer. If he played his cards right, he could have Gilbert Gottfried's movie and television career.
Like Gottfried, Sandler became a Not Ready for Prime Time Player on "Saturday Night Live." Unlike Gottfried, he didn't get canned after his first season. By the early 1990s, he was one of the show's breakout stars. He built on his success via a pair of platinum comedy albums ("They're All Gonna Laugh at You" and "What the Hell Happened to Me?"), and proved he could carry a movie with 1995's "Billy Madison." The critics loathed him, but teens and twentysomethings dug his unrepentantly juvenile humor.

The man, the legend, The Mandalorian. Few performers are able to make such an impact in such distinctly different fashion across the decades, but athlete-turned-actor/director Carl Weathers was certainly one of those. He has died at the age of 76.
Born on January 14, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Weathers’ initial career was much more focused on sports, specifically American Football, relying on athletic prowess to overcome adversity. He played on teams at Long Beach City College, San Diego State and signed on with the Oakland Raiders in 1970, making a mark as a linebacker.
But after various injuries, he decided in 1974 to focus on performance, pursuing a drama degree at San Francisco State University. Weathers took a familiar route to screens, working on commercials and smaller roles in films and guesting on a variety of TV series.

Sylvester Stallone is paying tribute to his longtime friend and “Rocky” co-star Carl Weathers, who died Thursday at age 76.
Speaking through a video posted to his Instagram Friday evening, Stallone recalled his longtime partnership with Weathers, through the “Rocky” series and their decades-long friendship. The star gave the message while standing in front of a painting depicting their characters, Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed, squaring off in the ring.
“Today is an incredibly sad day for me. I’m so torn up, I can’t even tell you. I’m just trying to hold it in because Carl Weathers was such an integral part of my life, my success — everything about it, I give him incredible credit and kudos. Because when he walked into that room and I saw him for the first time, I saw greatness. But I didn’t realize how great,” Stallone said. “I never could’ve...

Sometimes it seemed like Carl Weathers could do anything. The football star-turned-actor also directed a fair number of television episodes (including two episodes of "The Mandalorian") and worked as a producer, extending his experience into all parts of entertainment. He worked with an incredible range of talent and touched many lives even beyond those he interacted with directly, making his passing a massive blow to anyone who loves movies or TV. The absolute titan sadly died yesterday at the age of 76, and many of the people who he worked with and who were inspired by him took to social media to share their feelings about the late, great man.
The outpouring of love included words from co-stars like Pedro Pascal and Jesse Ventura, along with regular collaborators like Adam Sandler, whom Weathers worked with on movies like "Happy Gilmore," "Little Nicky," and "Eight Crazy Nights." There's a Carl Weathers-shaped hole in the world,...

Carl Weathers, who starred as Apollo Creed in the first four “Rocky” films opposite Sylvester Stallone, died Thursday, his manager Matt Luber confirmed to Variety. He was 76.
Weathers also starred in 1987’s “Predator” and had a memorable role in Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore.” He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his work in the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian.”
He voiced Combat Carl in “Toy Story 4” and played a fictionalized version of himself in a recurring role on “Arrested Development.” His other credits include the TV series “Street Justice,” “Colony,” “The Shield,” “Chicago Justice” and “Brothers,” and the films “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Death Hunt” and “The Comebacks.”
After working with Sandler on the 1996 golf comedy “Happy Gilmore,” Weathers briefly reprised his role in “Little Nicky” and voiced a character in Sandler’s animated Hanukkah comedy “Eight Crazy Nights.

The week of Thanksgiving is always a major one for moviegoers, and these days, that holds true for streaming too. Netflix typically offers up a new movie that becomes an instant hit among subscribers, and this year it was the animated Adam Sandler film "Leo." If you haven't seen the ads for "Leo," it's a musical coming-of-age comedy about an old lizard (Sandler) who becomes a mentor to fifth graders after they discover the class pet can talk. It's more likely that you have already seen this movie, though, as Netflix reports that 34.6 million people tuned in to watch it during the week of November 20th to 27, 2023.
Streamers' self-reported data is notoriously less-than-transparent, but an animated kids' movie doing huge numbers during a long weekend is a no-brainer. "Leo" also actually looks good; the smooth animation is closer to Dreamworks or Pixar style than typical Netflix fare, and Sandler reigns...

Leave it to Adam Sandler to deliver the animated surprise of the holiday season with the “SNL”-influenced “Leo” (currently streaming on Netflix). It’s a smart, funny, existential musical comedy about a jaded 74-year-old class pet lizard (voiced by Sandler), who dispenses advice to Florida fifth graders. It’s also a return to the indie roots of his last animated musical, “Eight Crazy Nights.”
But “Leo” is more personal. It’s the second Sandler family affair this year, following “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah”: Sandler’s wife, Jackie, and his daughters, Sunny and Sadie, voice characters in the film. In fact, the genesis of the project occurred when Sandler put on “Grease” for his daughters when they were tweens and realized that it was inappropriate.
That got Sandler thinking about doing a musical comedy centered around “Grease” for the fifth grade with long-time collaborator,...

An animated semi-musical sees the comedy star take on the role of agony uncle for struggling kids in a sweet if a little disjointed tale
Earlier this year, Adam Sandler’s high-volume, low-quality Netflix deal gifted us with the surprisingly sensitive coming-of-age comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, a rare critical win for his company, Happy Madison. It might not have reached the heights of the year’s other big pre-teen adaptation Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret? but it was sweeter and subtler than most expected and became his best-reviewed film to date on Rotten Tomatoes, an interesting use of his sway at the streamer.
It might have been focused on middle schoolers but it represented a maturity absent from so many of Sandler’s tiresome films on Netflix, a platform he initially collaborated with because it rhymes with “Wet Chicks”. His latest Leo sits comfortably alongside,...

After 2023’s earlier surprise comedic family gem You Are Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah, Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions have done it again for Netflix, this time in the delightful and remarkably wise CGI animated feature Leo. It is a charmer for kids and their parents who get a few lessons here along the way as well.
Sandler voices 74-year-old Iguana, Leo, as if he were about to take the lectern at a Friar’s Roast. Leo has lived his whole life on display in a fifth grade classroom with revolving groups of kids since the 1940s. Next to him is Bff Squirtle, a fast talking turtle voiced memorably by Bill Burr. They are kind of the Bert and Ernie of the classroom, talking only to each other, and never revealing to the kids or teachers that they can actually converse with humans too. Leo, for whatever reason,...

‘Leo’ Review: Adam Sandler Plays a Literal Teacher’s Pet in Winning Toon From the ‘TV Funhouse’ Team
“Perhaps if people talked less, animals would talk more,” observes one of the human characters in “Charlotte’s Web,” a kiddie classic that serves as both the butt of several jokes and an inspiration for Adam Sandler’s animated “Leo,” an endearing Netflix original that strikes just the right balance between heart and fart jokes.
Basing the way Leo sounds on his squeaky-scratchy, slightly guttural impression of the late Hollywood agent Bernie Brillstein, Sandler voices a crusty old iguana who’s spent three-quarters of a century — practically his entire life — trapped in an elementary school classroom. Leo’s wisdom is largely limited to what’s taught in fifth grade, though he’s observed enough kids over his 74 years that the lizard reckons he’s qualified to advise this crop. Truth be told, he’s cheaper and more consistently helpful than your typical child psychologist.

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Based on the iconic comic book by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, season two will find super-powered protagonist Mark attempting to rebuild his life after finding out the truth about his father Nolan.
Elsewhere on the streamer, the producing team behind the James Bond movies are out to spin the franchise in a completely different direction by debuting their curious new globe-trotting adventure series, pitched somewhere between a quiz show and a treasure hunt. 007: Road To A Million features Brian Cox as the game’s “mastermind”, watching over the contestants as they try to win a million quid.

For a movie that's mostly about how friendships are forever, the 2010 Adam Sandler comedy "Grown Ups" may have had fans wondering about a conspicuously missing face from the sequel. For much of Sandler's career on the big screen, he's been joined by longtime friend and collaborator Rob Schneider. Starting with 1998's "The Waterboy," the two actors have appeared in well over a dozen movies together, from the likes of "Mr. Deeds" and "The Longest Yard" to even an animated movie like "Eight Crazy Nights." Contrary to recent rumors, the bond still seems to be going strong as the two ended up joining forces again in 2017's "Sandy Wexler" and once more in "Hubie Halloween" three years ago. But that hasn't stopped fans from wondering why, after such a prominent role in "Grown Ups," Schneider didn't return for another go-around in "Grown Ups 2."

Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions is returning to animation for this year’s Leo, the trailer for which has dropped ahead of its November release.

Opera Man. Barry Egan. Billy Madison. Happy Gilmore. Dracula. Howard Ratner. Leo the Lizard??
If that last name doesn't sound familiar to you, it might very soon. As you can likely tell from the names preceding it, Adam Sandler has portrayed an impressively large number of memorable characters on-screen throughout his career. Although he's most well-known for his comedies (resulting in his being lauded when he takes on a dramatic project such as "Punch Drunk Love" or "Uncut Gems"), even a cursory glance at Sandler's resumé reveals his impressive range of projects in a variety of genres and mediums.
One of those mediums is animation, as best seen in "Eight Crazy Nights" or his successful "Hotel Transylvania" franchise. The Sandman is certainly keeping himself busy these days, and he doesn't show any signs of slowing down anytime soon. Adam Sandler starred in the basketball drama "Hustle" for Netflix earlier this summer, which came only a few months after announcing he was reuniting with The Safdie Brothers, the team behind his Oscar-snubbed performance in "Uncut Gems." Over the years, Sandler has proven he is more than capable of delivering serious, dramatic performances in films like "Punch Drunk Love," "The Meyerowitz Stories," and "Reign Over Me." But to a lot of folks, Sandler will forever be associated with slapstick comedies from the 1990s and groan-inducing films of the 2010s. Sandler is a bit of an enigma, but he's also someone who specifically works on projects because he wants to, not because he feels like it's expected of him.

(Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: "Eight Crazy Nights.")
A box-office bomb and absolutely eviscerated by critics upon release, Adam Sandler's "Eight Crazy Nights" is an oft-maligned Hanukkah film filled with questionable attempts at humor, but with ridiculously impressive animation that showcases some of the best in 2D animation. Sandler stars as Davey Stone, a 33-year-old drunk who gets himself in trouble with the law after his narcissistic alcoholic tendencies get the better of him. In an attempt to offer Davey a chance at redemption under the guise of "holiday spirit," the judge orders him to spend the holiday season doing community service as the assistant referee for a youth basketball league. He has to stay out of trouble or face jail time. Davey thinks he's getting off easy until he meets the head referee — the eccentric,...

Exclusive: Tyra Banks (America’s Next Top Model) has signed on for a role in Treehouse Pictures’ remake of Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, which is heading into production in Los Angeles in July.
The original 1991 film, from director Stephen Herek, follows Sue Ellen “Swell” Crandell (Christina Applegate), a 17-year-old forced to take care of her four younger siblings after the babysitter hired by her mother dies while mom’s out of town. While the Warner Bros comedy also starring Joanna Cassidy, Keith Coogan, John Getz and Josh Charles didn’t land as a major hit, either critically or commercially, it has fostered a cult following in the decades since.
Treehouse’s remake is billed as a present-day retelling centered on a Black family. Banks will play Cassidy’s character Rose, a fashion executive at General Apparel West, who takes a chance on Swell by hiring her as an executive assistant.

Norm Crosby, a comedian known as the “Master of Malaprop,” has died. The actor-writer, also known for appearing in a number of film titles, including Grown Ups 2, Cougar Club and Alright Already, was 93.
Crosby died of heart failure at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, The Hollywood Reporter learned.
The Master of Malaprop was born on September 15, 1927 in Boston. He kicked off his career in the 1950s on the standup scene. Coming up as a comedian, Crosby soon made malaprop, the intentional mistaken use of a similar sounding word for comedy, as his signature move.
From his various appearances on the stand-up scene, Crosby expanded the reach of his career, landing spots on notable talk shows throughout the 60s.

There are essentially two types of Adam Sandler movies, though they sometimes come in varying shades. On the left side are the more casual, laissez-faire affairs, wherein the popular comedic actor/producer plays an exaggerated variation of his real-life, good-hearted slacker persona. Some of them are charming enough (“Billy Madison,” “The Wedding Singer,” “50 First Dates“), some are mixed (“Big Daddy,” “Spanglish“), and a few are, err, curious failures (“Eight Crazy Nights,” “Click,” “The Cobbler“), but the rest stink of cash-grabbing laziness (the “Grown Ups” movies, “Just Go With It,” “Blended“).

It’s fair to say that Channukah doesn’t exactly engender the same kind of cinematic outpouring of love as other December-ish holidays do.
Unfortunately we’re waiting for that Maccabee epic that’s never been – our money’s on Spielberg to knock that one out of the park. While other festivities like Passover have obvious crossover potential (here’s looking at you, Charlton Heston) the festival of lights hasn’t quite caught the movie world on fire.
That said, this time for family fun gathering around a flickering flame might be the perfect time to have a little bit of your own film festival, Jew or Gentile alike taking time to celebrate the miracle of cinema. Here’s eight nights of watching to get you in the Channukah mood:...

Read More: 'Pixels' Reviews Give Adam Sandler No Quarter Back in late July, after "Pixels" became a critical and commercial deathtrap, numerous media outlets published their obituaries for Adam Sandler's career (see THR, Variety and New York Post for examples), and for good reason. In an industry where longterm success relies on versatility, the 49-year-old comedian has refused to move on from his immature, misogynistic routine. Sandler's manchild schtick earned him blockbuster success in a string of 1990s hits, but these days it comes off as lazy and embarrassing, and it appears critics and audiences are no longer buying into it. Making matters more frustrating is that every time Sandler has dared to step outside of his safe zone and show real glimmers of cinematic talent, he's only retreated further back to his crude origins -- this is an actor who followed up "Punch-Drunk Love" with "Eight Crazy Nights,...

Ellen Albertini Dow, the scene-stealing actress who blossomed on both the big and small screens late in life and gave a memorable rapping performance in "The Wedding Singer," has died. She was 101.
Albertini Dow's incredible life began in Pennsylvania in 1913, and she studied acting and mime alongside industry legends including Martha Graham and Marcel Marceau. She and her husband, Eugene Dow, started the theater program at Pierce College in California, where she taught until she retired in 1985.
But Albertini Dow didn't stop there. She started taking acting classes at the American Film Institute and began a career in her 70s, scoring roles in television series including the 1980s reboot of "The Twilight Zone." She went on to appear on television numerous times throughout the next few decades of her life, including guest spots on series such as "Moonlighting," "Murphy Brown," "The Golden Girls," "The Wonder Years," "Star Trek: The Next Generation,...

For this week’s spotlight piece, I wanted to sort of go back to the start of the series and take a look at someone who doesn’t get the respect that they deserve from the masses. Today, that person is Adam Sandler, one of the kings of comedy who also has a flair for drama when he decides to go that route. He’s a huge titan of studio comedy, for sure, but he’s got a load of talent for when he chooses to get serious. The laughs have shot him to the A-list, but when he’s gone for depth and emotion, he’s shown that he’s got some acting chops as well. He’s rather underrated overall, so a spotlight today is definitely in the cards for him. Sandler got his start towards the A-list through television when he was cast on Saturday Night Live...

★★★☆☆ Adam Sandler returns to the world of animation for the first time since 2002's ill-received Eight Crazy Nights. That film was a crude and joyless affair, featuring the same off-putting mix of gross-out and sentiment synonymous with Sandler's recent live-action work. Thankfully, he lends only his voice to proceedings here, although regular cast members from his films, Kevin James, David Spade and Steve Buscemi also crop up (Rob Schneider must have been suffering from laryngitis). The absence of Sandler donning the producer and writers hat is entirely welcoming, as Hotel Transylvania (2012) is a surprisingly engaging kid's film.

Adam Sandler (Hotel Transylvania) will make his own Blazing Saddles. He'll write, produce and star in the comedy western Ridiculous 6. The title sounds a lot like it could be a spoof of the western classic The Magnificent Seven, but Sandler's Happy Madison production company isn't releasing any details. Of course, with the "6" it looks like Kevin James, David Spade and Rob Schneider can count on some work - who wants to bet Schneider plays a Mexican, since he seems to take on a different ethnicity in every Sandler movie (Native American in Bedtime Stories, Asian minister in Here Comes Chuck and Larry, Chinese Waiter in Eight Crazy Nights, Nazo the Italian Delivery Man in Mr. Deeds, etc.)
Sandler will cowrite the film with his long time collaborator and former "SNL" writer Tim Herlihy who has either written or produced most of Sandler's movies. Paramount Pictures will put the movie into...

On the heels of the recent spate of horror animations – Paranorman and Frankenweenie – comes Adam Sandler’s family-friendly submission, which has the executive producer and star’s sense of humour stamped all over it – from the immature jokes, the silly voices, the protagonist’s penchant for singing (Groan!) and the supporting cast made up of the usual mainstays of comedy.

So far the first couple trailers for Hotel Transylvania have promised the big screen goofiness of Adam Sandler but in an animated family friendly package this time. Though Sandler ventured into animation with Eight Crazy Nights before, this seems to be a little less crass and creative, even if Sandler is bringing all his usual buddies like Kevin James, David Spade and Steve Buscemi into the mix. Now each of the stars get a character poster along with Selena Gomez as Dracula's daughter Mavis and Fran Drescher as Frankenstein's wife. All the characters resemble their voice stars, especially Spade. See what I mean below! Here are the character posters for Genndy Tartakovsky's Hotel Transylvania from Yahoo: Genndy Tartakovsky directs Hotel Transylvania with a script from Kevin Hageman, Dan Hageman and David I. Stern. Have reports of Adam Sandler's demise have been greatly exaggerated? Probably. Despite the bomb-level box office results for "That's My Boy," Sandler is far from over. His mojo is just fine.
Here's why: $149 million, $214 million, $271 million. Those are the global grosses of "Jack and Jill," "Just Go With It" and "Grown Ups," Sandler's last three films prior to "That's My Boy." Additionally, Sandler has watched as "Bedtime Stories" ($212 million), "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" ($199 million), "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" ($186 million), "Click" ($237 million), "The Longest Yard" ($190 million), "50 First Dates" ($196 million), "Anger Management" ($195 million) and "Mr. Deeds" ($171 million) raked in massive returns around the world over the last decade. During that same time frame, his only films to not gross over $149 million worldwide were "Funny People," "Reign Over Me," "Spanglish," "Eight Crazy Nights" and "Punch-Drunk Love."
All of which is to say that Adam Sandler isn't on the downside of his career.

Logic would dictate that since Battleship sunk at the box office earlier this summer, any and all future movies based on board games or toys should be put out of their misery. Unfortunately, logic is in short supply in Hollywood these days, because the madness continues. This week Hasbro has announced another new project being set up at Sony Pictures, not based on a board game, but rather a very well-known toy line. That's right... Tonka Trucks are about to get their very own feature film and Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions will be helping to make it a reality. Here's what Sony Pictures Digital Productions president Bob Osher had to say about the movie: "In its 65 years, Tonka has become more than a toy or a brand; Tonka trucks are a rite of passage for kids all around the world... Time spent with these toys creates memories that...

The funniest thing about the trailer for Jack and Jill, a real movie that opens in theaters this weekend, is how fake it all seems. The mind-bogglingly absurd image of Adam Sandler playing both himself and his boorish, Noo Yawk twin sister Jill looked like it could have been one of the movies his Funny People character willingly sold out to make a quick buck for. Actually, it felt more like something out of a South Park episode in which they’d parody the mind-boggling absurdity of most Sandler flicks. And it’s likely to fetch a whole lot more than a pail of water. In fact, regardless of whether your or I like it, the new Adam Sandler movie, awful as it may look, is primed to make another mint for the comedian. In fact, other than Puss in Boots, the lock Jack and Jill has in taking the top spot at this weekend’s box office seems pretty evident. Like the battle for #1 last weekend between Puss in Boots and Tower Heist, we’re looking at a round 2 of sorts here. Regardless who comes out on top, my money is on the movie featuring characters named Jack and Jill. In fact, you can take that one to the bank. Big Hitters Adam Sandler makes people laugh.
