I just cannot believe the fact that this movie is so underrated in the IMDb! Nirnayam is one of those rare remakes which actually surpasses the quality of the original movie. It's the remake of the 1993 American classic, The Fugitive but that doesn't take anything away from this brilliantly executed film! The cinematography, making style, soundtrack & fight sequences can be considered as 'ground breaking'. It's way ahead of its time! Also, it was the first malayalam movie to use wide angle lens camera for the fight sequences & POV shots which was later used in films like Kalapani and Amen. The lighting in most of the frames look classy & vibrant. The soundtrack & sound design is so well advanced and still holds up after all these years! The soundtrack was done by the composer, R.Anand. The soundtrack was a highly experimental one for Malayalam Cinema. He used avante garde synthesizers which was primarily used during the time period of 80's english music. Such brilliance in sound engineering that too, from the early 90's! It really fits into the overall tone of the film. Mohanlal gives an exceptionally brilliant performance as the character, Dr. Roy. The character is indeed a well written one. He is an orphan and a honest & a brilliant surgeon yet, he isn't money minded like the other doctors of the hospital who use their knowledge of medical science for their own personal gains. There is an important scene in the film which showcases that. I really loved the romance parts between Roy(Mohanlal) and Annie(Heera Rajgopal). They had an amazing chemistry together. What I really loved about this film was the father-daughter kind of relationship between Roy(Mohanlal) and Parukutty(Shamili). This is reason why I feel this movie is a better version of The Fugitive as it focuses on character development & space in its 1st half but The Fugitive focuses on action & thriller elements instead. But it was really from the 2nd half of the movie that it started to kick ass! Lalu Alex makes his appearance in the 2nd half as plays the role of a badass cop like the one potrayed by Tommy Lee Jones in the original. He simply nailed that role! The villain characters were also great but the makers could've given a bit more space for their performances. Overall it's an outstanding film & outstanding film making which certainly deserves more recognition for its performances, theme and cinematography. It is a shining example of The Golden Era of Cinematic Brilliance i.e. from the 80's to 90's. And It very well showcased the dark side of the medical community and how they cheat their patients. Truly a cult classic from Malayalam Cinema ! Hat's off to the director, Sangeeth Sivan!
