The film takes us back into the times of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom - 13th century. The Bulgarian Emperor - Tsar Ioan Assen - is trying through several marriages to enlarge the State and to support the peace in it.
In the 13 c. Yoan Asen ruled Bulgaria. The king is good and wise ruler, but very authoritative as well. He realizes that prolonged wars have exhausted his people and decided to uphold peace by all means. His solution is to marry several times in order to protect the interests of the state. He even sends his only love to a monastery. Following his goal, King Yoan Asen sacrifices the personal happiness of his brother and his daughter as well.
