March 17, 1951 was a great day in history, because that’s the day Kurt Vogel Russell entered the world. And while he would go on to become one of the biggest icons of the eighties and nineties, many folks don’t know that Russell started as a child star for The Walt Disney Company, even acting opposite his future life partner Goldie Hawn in The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968) – although they wouldn’t get together until Russell ended up in another movie starring Goldie Hawn, Swing Shift (1984). From the sixties into the seventies, he starred in Disney flicks like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), but as the studio’s movies started to flop and Russell got older, a change of pace was needed. Arguably, Russell’s career took off when he began working with director John Carpenter, with the first movie being 1979’s TV movie Elvis, but what...

Kadokawa revealed its its top-performing IP for the first quarter of 2024 (April-June), with Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in Dungeon) taking the lead by a wide margin.
The company reported that the IP generated over 2 billion yen in revenue across all media, including publishing, anime, and licensing, although the exact figure was not disclosed.
Dungeon Meshi topped the rankings in both the publishing and IP creation segment, as well as the anime production segment, earning more than twice the sales of the second-place IP.
Coming in second was KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!, which brought in close to 1 billion yen in sales.
Despite being licensed from another company, the anime adaptation of Oshi no Ko secured the third position, solely based on its anime revenue.

When Kurt Russell shed his Disney child star image once and for all as the leathery, laconic renegade Snake Plissken in John Carpenter's dystopian action hit "Escape from New York," he seemed poised for a long career as a handsome, rough-and-tumble leading man, the John Wayne-Steve McQueen hybrid America needed now that both had hit the soil. Russell, however, had other plans.
For starters, Russell didn't dig the laconic shtick. After a tonally similar performance as the perpetually cheesed-off R.J. MacReady in Carpenter's "The Thing," the actor sought to send up his tough-guy persona in goofball action flicks like "Big Trouble in Little China" and "Tango & Cash." He also gleefully made a fool of himself in broad comedies (memorably/infamously in "Overboard" and "Captain Ron"), while playing in-over-their-heads everymen in thrillers like "The Mean Season" and "Unlawful Entry." He could still do the gruff act when...

Bring up the films of John Carpenter to any movie buff worth their weight in celluloid, and once they finish praying in the direction of Bowling Green, Kentucky, they'll start in on the essentials –- i.e. every movie in his oeuvre stretching from 1974's "Dark Star" to 1988's "They Live." From here, they'll single out 1994's "In the Mouth of Madness" as a return to peak form after the disappointing "Memoirs of an Invisible Man," and maybe share kind words about "Escape from L.A." "Vampires," "Ghosts of Mars," and, heck, even "The Ward." But that '74 -- '88 run is considered sacrosanct. You don't dispute this, and if you're fortunate enough to be a working filmmaker, you think long and hard about the wisdom of remaking one of these classics should a studio ever offer you the opportunity.
This is because Carpenter's aesthetic is inimitable. The widescreen compositions, the long takes,...

Ron Shelton's "Dark Blue" was a victim of impossible expectations. James Ellroy wrote the screenplay in 1993 (then titled "The Plague Season"), envisioning Kurt Russell in the role of racist LAPD Sergeant Eldon Perry. The story takes place in a jittery city awaiting the riot-inciting verdict of the Rodney King trial. We know what's coming in the macro, but the micro tale of Perry and his partner Bobby Keough (Scott Speedman) being forced to frame a couple of ex-cons for murders committed by informants loyal to their corrupt superior Jack Van Meter (Brendan Gleeson) could break either way. This being Ellroy, the master of corrosive neo-l.A. noir, we're expecting everything to go down twisted. But with the riots looming, Perry and Keough's errand feels destined to get extra messy.
Given its long road to a greenlight, "Dark Blue" acquired the aura of a passion project for Ellroy. And since he tended to spin sprawling,...

Oi there, listen up! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for June 2024 includes another season of its biggest, bloodiest hit.
The Boys season 4 premieres its first three episodes on Thursday, June 13. Based on the trailers, The Boys is really leaning into the political side of its social satire with a presidential election underway and Homelander on trial for the small matter of killing a guy last season. The season will continue to air on Thursdays, culminating with the finale on July 18.
Amazon is really leaning into its sports offerings this month as well. Fans will get to watch the New York Yankees, the WNBA, and the Nwsl several times throughout June. That’s in addition to a couple of sports docs: Power of the Dream on June 18 and Federer: Twelve Final Days on June 20.
But if you’re looking for something even more explosive than Homelander and Roger Federer,...

The arc of the "Star Trek" films released from 2009 to 2016 is an odd one. In 2009, J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" rebooted the film series in a new timeline, depicting a brand new cast of younger actors playing the "Star Trek" characters we all knew and loved but altered thanks to a causality/time travel conceit. That film was a massive hit, repurposing "Star Trek" into a slick, sexy action franchise. Long gone were the days of philosophical intellectualizing and tales of diplomacy. Thousands of nerdy conversations immediately began as to what constituted the "real" version of "Star Trek" and what didn't.
Abrams followed his film in 2012 with "Star Trek Into Darkness," a film that repurposed the character of Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch) previously seen in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." That film was also a hit but is generally not as liked as the 2009 film.

Horror doesn’t always have to be jump scare after jump scare or a non-stop gore fest. It doesn’t have to have Aliens, Terminators, or Predators to say nothing of any of the other monsters we’ve seen over the years. Movies that don’t include those coveted horror checklists typically get lumped into the thriller category like Silence of the Lambs or even Get Out. Funny how those are the movies that the Globes and Oscars want to award. Without a shadow of a doubt horror films that can be labeled something a little more friendly to draw more audience demographics or get better ink in reviews. I’m here...

Editor’s note: One in a series of stories marking the 100th day of the WGA strike.
As the WGA strike clocks 100 days, simply put — the motion picture studios had always been bracing for this.
Unlike the current SAG-AFTRA strike that forced the global shutdown of Hollywood movies including Gladiator 2 and Deadpool 3, the WGA strike, though largely considered to be a TV and streaming fight, has left its mark on the motion picture side — most predominantly on initially shaking up the theatrical-release schedule.
Franchise leader Disney was the first studio to overhaul its calendar with the move of 21 movies from 2025 through 2031. Chief among them was the delay of James Cameron’s long-in-the-works Avatar 3 pushing from Christmas 2024 to 2025, and several Marvel projects redated including Phase 6 finales Avengers: Kang Dynasty going from the start of May 2025 to 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars shifting from May 2026 to May 2027. With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

HBO is developing a limited series about SpaceX, the space exploration company founded by Elon Musk.
The six-episode series “SpaceX” will be based on the book “Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future” by Ashlee Vance. It will document how Musk, in pursuit of his lifelong dream to make humankind a multi-planetary species, handpicks a team of engineers to work on a remote Pacific Island where they build, and launch, the first SpaceX rocket into orbit. Boston trio Throwing Muses have shared another new song, “Frosting,” from their upcoming album, Sun Racket, out September 4th via Fire Records.
“Frosting,” as its title suggests, is a chilly blast of all-enveloping alt-rock, although the decisive swing of David Narcizo’s drums and Bernard Georges’ bass makes for a unique underpinning to Kristin Hersh’s buzzsaw guitar and hazy vocals. “In heaven maybe they don’t call you crazy,” Hersh wails near the song’s end, “In heaven take me over.”

Throwing Muses get nautical on the thrashing new song “Dark Blue.” The track is the lead single off the band’s new album, Sun Racket, out May 22nd on Fire Records.
“If I were a better dreamer, you’d be a dream come true,” Kristin Hersh seethes on “Dark Blue.” She sings over a crunching guitar riff, swimming through the dark waters of the chorus before repeating “Coming down” over and over, making her way back to shore.

When Dylan McDermott first read the role of Captain Dave in the Fox comedy “La to Vegas” he knew instantly that “this is the guy I’ve been waiting for.” McDermott, who did stand-up in New York and grew up admiring Peter Sellers, was “looking to do something different” from the heavy dramas that made him a star. “I love this absurd humor,” he reveals, “and Captain Dave obviously is absurd, so I was just completely attracted to him.” Dave is the drunken, womanizing pilot of a budget airline whose main flight is a weekend route from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Watch our exclusive video interview with McDermott above.

After years of being mistaken for each other, Dylan McDermott and Dermot Mulroney are finally having a laugh. McDermott plays the macho pilot Captain Dave in Fox’s “La To Vegas,” while Mulroney shows up in at least two episodes this season as a high-flying rival.
“It’s been 30 years of people confusing us,” McDermott says on the latest edition of IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast. “Obviously it culminated on the SNL sketch [2012’s “Dylan McDermott or Dermot Mulroney?” faux game show].” In the bit, Jamie Foxx’s character is a game show contestant who comes up with another name for the two of them: Derbel McDillet — which became McDermott’s Instagram handle for a time.
McDermott noted that he and Mulroney even shared the same agent early in their careers, the legendary Sue Mengers, who told them they had to change their names. “I was going to be Mick Dermott,” he said. “That was my genius plan.

When Kurt Russell stepped into the detective’s uniform for “Dark Blue,” he wasn’t just accepting another movie role. He was taking a stand. He was destroying an image he’d spent two decades building, and turning his back on the American hero audiences had come to recognize at the sight of him.
Becoming a villain sounds kind of heroic, doesn’t it?
It was.
“Dark Blue” is one of those low-budget cop dramas you don’t see made at studios anymore. At a reported $15 million, Ron Shelton’s feature couldn’t even make back its budget. We take a look at new Blu-rays of two ’80s classics.
Shout! Factory’s relatively young collectors label, Shout Select, is something of an odd duck. This is less of a criticism than an observation as their releases so far bear no real discernible through line. We’ve gotten well-deserved Blu-rays of eagerly awaited ’80s classics like To Live and Die in La, Road House, and Midnight Run, but the label has also released/announced titles like Death of a Salesman, The Chinese Connection, and Simon Pegg’s forgettable 2012 film, A Fantastic Fear of Everything. So yeah, there’s something of an odd inconsistency across the catalog.
For now though we’re here to discuss their latest releases, two ’80s films of varying acclaim and renown — John Milius’ Red Dawn and Dennis Hopper’s Colors.

Premiere magazine highlighted 10 movie executives to watch in 1990. So what happened to them?
In its May 1990 issue, the sadly-missed Us version of Premiere magazine published an article, highlighting ten young movie executives, and suggesting that these were people with very big futures ahead of them in the industry.
Given that much is written about movie executives, without actually digging much deeper to find out who they actually are, I thought it was worth tracing what happened to these ten, and – 26 years later – whether Premiere was correct in saluting them as the future of the industry. So, er, I did...

Action/thrillers about cops and robbers have been around for eighty years, but writer/director David Ayer successfully carved out a niche of his own over the past decade and a half with films that ramp up the intensity, immediacy, and authenticity on both sides of the law. Movies like Training Day, Dark Blue, Street Kings, and End of Watch drop viewers into the murky and restless grey area where both the good guys and bad guys move. Ayer’s last effort in this direction, Sabotage, is a ridiculous mess, and since then he’s moved further away with the WWII tank warfare film, Fury, and the upcoming comic adaptation, Suicide Squad. “Who will take up his mantle during this sabbatical?”, ask fans of testosterone-fueled, graphically violent, morally scattershot action films about law and disorder. (Okay, fine, it’s just me asking…) Turns out John Hillcoat is your huckleberry, apparently. Triple 9...

John Hillcoat’s Triple 9 opens this Friday, and the fact that it’s not a David Ayer movie doesn’t stop it from being the best David Ayer movie since 2008. So of course I came home and threw in Ayer’s 2008 gem, Street Kings. I don’t care what anyone says, this is fantastic goddamn entertainment. Thrilling action sequences, real suspense, and a strong cast (who occasionally chew the Los Angeles scenery) make it a fun descent into hero-cop hell. Having already seen the film multiple times I decided to check out Ayer’s commentary this time around. He’s no stranger to movies about the blue and the grey — cops and fuzzy moralities — having written and/or directed Training Day, Dark Blue...

While at Sundance, Vulture talked to Spike Lee about the recent Oscar-diversity controversy. Here is but one sample:
It’s very presumptuous for my man Alejandro [Iñarritú] to tell anyone, especially black people, what to do. We know what to do. Also, if it wasn’t for [#OscarsSoWhite creator] April Reign, myself, my wife, Jada [Pinkett Smith] and Will [Smith], he wouldn’t even be talking about this. So him and them guys, they should chill. You had many opportunities to talk about this before, you chose to be quiet, Alejandro. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I ain’t heard him talk about diversity ever before.
