Witch Aggie Cromwell (Debbie Reynolds) and her fledgling witch granddaughter Marnie Piper (Kimberly J. Brown) travel to Halloweentown when some of Aggie's spells start going awry. They find that the entire town has been turned grey and that Aggie's spellbook has been stolen by a cute new boy Kal (Daniel Kountz) from Marnie's school. Kal is actually the son of evil magician Kalabar (Robin Thomas). With the help of goblin friend Luke (Phillip Van Dyke), Marnie attempts to thwart Kalabar's evil scheme.
Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge is the second movie in the Halloweentown series created by the Disney channel. It follows Halloweentown (1998) (1998) and is followed by Halloweentown High (2004) (2004) and Return to Halloweentown (2006) (2006). The screenplay was written by Jon Cooksey and Ali Matheson, who also wrote the screenplay (along with Paul Bernbaum) for the first Halloweentown movie. As in the first movie, it features Debbie Reynolds as Agatha "Aggie" Cromwell, an expert witch who hails from the magical world of Halloweentown.
Halloweentown exists in an alternate space and time. At one time, the current residents of Halloweentown -- witches, ghosts, and monsters of all sorts -- lived in what they call "the mortal world". Due to the persecution they suffered at the hands of mortals for being different, they left the mortal world and created their own community. Travel between the two worlds is possible through a portal that opens only on Halloween. Even then, all travelers must return to Halloweentown by midnight or the portal will close and they will be trapped in the mortal world.
One year. After saving Halloweentown at the end of the first movie, Aggie decided to move back into the mortal world and has been living for the past year with her daughter Gwen (Judith Hoag) and three grandchildren, Marnie, Dylan (Joey Zimmerman), and Sophie (Emily Roeske).
A golem is a creature from Jewish mythology. Created from clay, wood, straw or some other inanimate substance, a golem generally takes on a humanoid appearance. When animated by its creator, the golem can be sent out to do the creator's bidding. Golems are usually depicted as mindless and unable to speak, although in Halloweentown II, Kal (Daniel Kountz) fashions a talking golem out of frogs and makes it serve as his father Alex (Peter Wingfield). A photo of a typical golem can be viewed here.
There's actually three portal spells used in the movie. (1) The first opens the portal from the mortal world to Halloweentown and goes like this: "From the mortal world depart we now on this the night All Hallow's eve; back into Halloweentown through the portal we take our leave. " (2) The spell to go from Halloweentown back into the mortal world is the reverse: "From Halloweentown depart we now on this the night All Hallow's eve; back into the mortal world through the portal we take our leave. " (3) Marnie's spell to create a portal at will goes like this: "We call on the dreams of creature and mortal to heal the wound that worlds divide. From now on, we each can create a portal and each of us our own path decide. "
The clock strikes midnight and the portal closes, trapping Marnie and Aggie in Halloweentown for the next year. Marnie decides that it is time to create another portal, a sort of back door, into Halloweentown, so she calls Sophie on the headphones and enlists her help. Combining their powers, Marnie, Aggie, Luke, Dylan, Sophie, and Gwen are able to create a new portal between Halloweentown and the mortal world that can be opened at will. Marnie, Aggie, and Luke return to the mortal world where Kal has succeeded at turning all the people at the high school's Halloween party into the real creatures of whatever costumes they are wearing. Marnie tries to make peace with Kal, but his hatred prevents him, so Marnie asks him just to give back Aggie's spellbooks. Kal produces them but covers them with a spell of protection and dares Marnie to reach through it. Marnie refuses to let Kal scare her, so she reaches through the protections and retrieves the books for Aggie. In a fit of anger, Kal disappears, and Aggie reads the spell that turns everyone back into their human selves. Marnie, Aggie, Luke, Dylan, and Sophie return to Halloweentown and reverse the Grey by saying the magic word "Trapa" to everyone they meet. Aggie replaces the Great Pumpkin in the town square, and all of Halloweentown is happy again (except maybe for Gort (Blu Mankuma)).
