Stroke is the 5th film in the 9@Night Film Series. The 9 @ Night film series, nine feature films sharing characters and circumstance with dialogue improvised by the Players, received the San Francisco Film Critic's Circle Marlon Riggs Award for courage and innovation in cinema in 2008.
Nilsson gave Johnson a place to call home in Berkeley, CA.
Edwin Johnson met Nilsson in the San Francisco Tenderloin. Johnson tried to hustle some cash from Nilsson and when he learned Nilsson was a filmmaker, he asked him what he was doing for people like him living on the streets. This led to the formation of the Tenderloin yGroup, Nilsson's workshop open to all regardless of background, orientation, experience or ability. Professionals dropped in over the 14 or so years including Sean Penn, Robert Viharo and Ron Perlman.
Edwin Johnson was living on the street in San Francisco's Tenderloin when he met Nilsson. He credits Nilsson and the Tenderloin yGroup with getting him sober and employed counseling other houseless persons struggling with addiction.
The World Premiere marathon screening of all 9 feature films took place at the Harvard Film Archive in 2007.
