After spending the month of October discussing Ed Gein and the various cinematic adaptations of his crimes, including The Silence of the Lambs, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (listen here) and House of 1000 Corpses (listen here), Jenn and I are now deep into cult territory in November.
After opening with a primer on preacher Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple last week (listen here), we’re shifting into a fictional adaptation of the real life events with Ti West‘s The Sacrament (2013).
In the film, Sam (Aj Bowen) a reporter from Vice news, brings two colleagues – Jake (Joe Swanberg) and photographer Patrick (Kentucker Audler) – to meet with his sister, Caroline (Amy Seimetz). Sam fears that Caroline has fallen in with a cult and their journey to a remote jungle encampment reveals a collection of scared people under the control of a charismatic figure,...

After spending the month of October discussing Ed Gein and the various cinematic adaptations of his crimes, including The Silence of the Lambs, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (listen here) and House of 1000 Corpses (listen here), Jenn and I are broadening our perspectives for November.
On the Main Feed, we’re focusing on cults and cult leaders with a look at two different, but complementary examples.
First up: we’re zeroing in on Jim Jones, the Peoples Temple and the notorious Jonestown massacre that killed more than 900 people. It’s a fascinating case that prompts us to consider how people can begin a cause with altruistic motives and the intent to do good, but eventually, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Jones is a prime example of this.
Over time, the horrific mass suicide that occurred in the jungles of Guyana have been...

We have been getting a lot of prequels in recent years. Some have turned out well, like Furiosa, Orphan: First Kill, Prey, and Pearl. Sometimes they don’t turn out very well, like Leatherface, and sometimes they can be quite divisive, like Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Good or bad, prequels are here to stay, so we have put together a list of Horror Prequels We Want to See.

Two years have passed since the release of musician / filmmaker Rob Zombie’s latest film, his update of the classic sitcom The Munsters, and we still don’t know what he’s going to make next (although we do have a wish list of movies we’d like to see him make). While we anxiously wait to hear what Zombie’s going to do next, we have decided to take a look back at all of the movies he has made, from House of 1000 Corpses to The Munsters, to put together a list of some of the Best Scenes from Rob Zombie movies to date.
House Of 1000 Corpses (2003): Home Visit
The feature directorial debut from Rob Zombie (who was born Robert Bartleh Cummings), the horror film House of 1000 Corpses had to overcome production issues, distribution problems, and lost footage on the way to reaching theatres two years later than expected,...

Halloween: Resurrection in 2002 seemed to close the door on the original film’s run. It had run out of gas and failed both critically, with a 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as commercially, with it only bringing in 37 million on its 15-million-dollar budget. The next year would see Freddy and Jason clash with each other and Leatherface get the remake treatment from studio Platinum Dunes. While Freddy and Jason would get their own remakes in 2009 and 2010 respectively, you know you can’t keep a good masked villain down for long. So, before his two main slasher rivals got their day in the sun, Michael Myers would receive his own remake that came out in 2007. With a drastically different take and a new producer behind the wheel, Halloween would get a chance to do something drastically different than anything we had seen before. Everyone will be entitled to one good...

Plex is gearing up for an exciting lineup of films and series in November 2024. Viewers can look forward to a variety of new additions, including Blue Ridge, But I’m A Cheerleader, Call Jane, and Empire State. Cult classics like The Grudge, Hard Candy, House of 1000 Corpses, and The Midnight Meat Train are also hitting the platform, alongside more recent hits like Wind River and Where’d You Go, Bernadette? For fans of horror, thrillers, and emotional dramas, there’s no shortage of options. However, Plex is also bidding farewell to a number of films and shows in November. Among those leaving are 24 Hours to Live, Drive Angry, The Devil’s Rejects, Snowpiercer, and USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage. If you’ve been meaning to watch these titles, now is the time to catch them before they disappear. For those looking to binge their favorites, many notable titles are still available for streaming.

It’s a bit of whiplash to go from covering Psycho (listen), Alfred Hitchcock’s seminal 1960 classic, to Rob Zombie’s Southern-fried feature debut, House of 1000 Corpses, but that’s what Jenn and I are doing as we continue our month-long exploration of Ed Gein. If you haven’t listened to the primer (here), that’s the best place to begin.
In Zombie’s first film, four College kids – Jerry (Chris Hardwick), Bill (Rainn Wilson), Mary (Jennifer Jostyn), and Denise (Erin Daniels) – run afoul of the Firefly clan and fight to survive the night. Of course, the demented family is more fun to watch, especially sexually aggressive Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie) and knife-happy Otis (Bill Moseley).
What’s fascinating about Zombie’s film, apart from how overwhelming his visuals are, is how many horror and true crime homages he packs in. This includes the trio of historical killers in...

At The Streamable, we love watching movies and TV for free, especially if we don’t have to sit through ads. Tubi is great, but seeing an ad for car insurance in the middle of your movie tends to kill the vibe. As we race to Halloween, we looked up all the best scary movies and found that a huge number were streaming ad-free on Kanopy, which is free if your library participates. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Hoopla is another free streamer that just added a major horror partner.
Your library probably partners with either Kanopy or Hoopla (or both!), giving you an unexpectedly great package of ad-free entertainment.
Use Kanopy for the Best Horror Selection
My jaw dropped when I saw how many A+ horror movies were available ad-free on Kanopy. You can see 48(!) of Metacritic’s best-reviewed horror films.

If you’ve heard anything at all about the film Abruptio, it’s most likely been positive, and you’ve probably wondered why you can’t find it in a theater or streaming. All of that is changing, which is a very good thing if you’re a fan of unique horror movies.
Released in 2023, Abruptio played at 37 international festivals, winning 21 awards along the way. I was lucky enough to receive a screener at that time, and I absolutely loved it. But, don’t take just my word for it. My colleague Brian Fanelli recently had the opportunity to watch Abruptio and he also gave it an extremely positive review.
Abruptio opened in select theaters on September 27, and will continue its run through at least mid-October. Hopefully, it will expand into even more theaters, because it’s a film that deserves to be seen on the big screen.

Serial producer Ryan Murphy, the man behind “American Horror Story,” “Feud,” “Pose” and many more, is already sharpening his knife for the third in his “Monster” series, which focuses on serial killers. With “Monsters: The Lyle and Eric Menendez Story” debuting on Netflix later this week (and second in the gruesome collection after “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” from 2022), Murphy disclosed at the red carpet premiere that next in the queue will be something of a classic—a look at Ed Gein, the Wisconsin killer whose murders in the 1950s loosely inspired the Alfred Hitchcock film “Psycho,” and, when more of the repulsive particulars became known, inspired Tobe Hooper’s “Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” the Buffalo Bill character from “Silence of the Lambs,” and Rob Zombie’s “House of 1000 Corpses.”

If there’s one thing horror fans and filmmakers love to do, it’s compare notes on their favourite facets of the genre. About movies, about influences, about giant creepy-crawlies. And most of all, about the different driving trends of the many eras; what we were scared of, and how that bled so openly into the defining genre cinema of the time. From the atomic fallout of the 1950s and the creature features that followed, to the rise of exploitation, and the real-world killers behind the eventual slasher boom of the ’80s, it’s the subtext that an entire community is built on.
So there’s something particularly warm and comforting about Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott’s similarly-tinged doc Generation Terror, which seeks to unravel the real-world fears behind the particularly grisly output of the 2000s. An era often characterised by iffy remakes and gnarly extremity which made for...

Rob Zombie has said that for every one film project of his that moves forward, there are five potential projects that fall by the wayside. We haven’t heard of quite that many unmade Rob Zombie movies, but we have heard of several over the years that never got off the ground… and unfortunately, most of them sounded pretty interesting. A little over a year ago, Zombie had said he didn’t know what his next movie is going to be, but he did know what it’s not going to be: he won’t be continuing his Firefly franchise, and he doesn’t want to make a sequel to The Munsters (which was poorly received). So while he figures out his next cinematic move, we we have put together a list of Rob Zombie Movies We Want To See!

At only 19 years old, Australian Alice Maio Mackay is already an accomplished filmmaker. Known for low budget, indie genre films like So Vam (2021) and Bad Girl Boogey (2022), Mackay routinely tells exceptional stories about characters running from monsters and masked killers from the horrifying perspective of what it’s like to fight for your life while being Queer and transgender in a bigoted small town.
Mackay’s newest film, Carnage for Christmas, is a fast-paced, blood-soaked whodunit, which follows a true crime podcaster returning to her small hometown years after transitioning and has to solve a series of gruesome murders, which the local police seem to be ignoring.

The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game from Gun Interactive was just released for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One back on August 18th, and the developers have been keeping a steady flow of updates coming ever since. As we’ve previously covered, tomorrow – June 11th – they will be adding a new villain character to the game in the form of Hands, the man who inspired Leatherface to start wearing masks of human flesh. They’ll also be adding a new victim character, and this one is an unexpected move: Maria Flores, the young woman whose disappearance kicked off the events of the game, is now going to be a playable character!
Fans have assumed that Maria was dead, but that’s not the case. As explained on the game’s official website, “Maria Flores, voiced by the talented Stephanie Panisello, is the heart and soul for our cast of Victims.

When it comes to making movies for himself, no one does it better than Rob Zombie. Love his films or not, there is a recognition to be had about his style. With his trademark blend of horror, dark humor, and trashy dialogue, Zombie creates a repulsive and fascinating world. After bursting out the music scene with White Zombie and eventually having a very successful solo career, Zombie ventured out and put his money where his mouth was by making his first feature film. House of 1000 Corpses first introduced the world to the Firefly clan and continued a couple of years later with the grittier and character-driven The Devil’s Rejects. While that film ends rather violently, fans have wondered if he would ever return to that world. But that would be impossible right? Fourteen years later, Rob Zombie finally showed us how the Firefly family could return after a pretty solidifying end.

First things first: Yes, Francis Galluppi is going to be directing a new movie in the “Evil Dead” franchise. And no, he can’t tell you anything about it. He can, however, prove his bona fides as a horror and suspense fan in our Zoom interview by pointing to the “Evil Dead” poster in his office and the “three Necronomicons on my desk.”
Galluppi landed the coveted gig after Sam Raimi saw Galluppi’s feature film debut, “The Last Stop in Yuma County,” the acclaimed thriller that arrives in theaters and on digital this week. Shot in 20 days on a budget of “about a million” dollars, the film is set almost entirely at road stop diner in an unspecified past era where traveling salesmen and rotary phones are still prevalent. Production has quietly begun on Pandemic Sex Party, about a masked maniac brutally crashing the titular bash. Writer/director Myles Erfurth says don’t let the title fool you! Pandemic Sex Party is a balls-to-the-wall gritty horror flick and pure grindhouse terror. Today, fans are being invited to join the party and participate in Pandemic Sex Party’s incentive-laden Indiegogo campaign.

Which do you prefer when it comes to crazy, maniacal, downright dirty and savage families looking to chop up some grade-a human flesh? I guess, it all comes down to personal preference, but isn’t preference drawing a fine line between comparing and downgrading the other? Well, you’re in luck, because another horror movie rip-off is in tow, and this time it brings the flesh by the pound, or pounds? I think it’s the latter. Today, we’re going to be discussing, a little bit of comparing, and see who claims victor, while the other takes the road less traveled in 2003’s Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses (watch it Here), and Tobe Hooper’s 1986 follow-up in the Leatherface mythos, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (watch it Here).
