Distraught, Charlotte runs for refuge to Château de Vallas. The Beaupins, who had favored her engagement to Antoine, now consider her a flighty girl and send her packing. Louise succeeds in imposing Charlotte as a teacher in Treilhac. She thus will be able to return to the château every week.
