The exact date is never explicitly stated in the 2021 dystopian thriller "Squid Game," but it takes place in an all-too-familiar world wherein a vital line has been crossed. So many Korean citizens are living in extreme poverty, it seems, that they are eager to participate in the titular Squid Game, a mysterious competitive event that will, under the right circumstances, award the winner ₩45.6 billion. The competition consists of 456 players who engage in simple children's games, with the losers being eliminated at the end of every round. The players, however, are surprised to learn that they will be murdered when they lose. The murderers are creepy masked thugs in pink tracksuits, and the event is overseen by the "Front Man," a masked man in black.

In The Show, a thriller directed by Giancarlo Esposito (of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fame), Josh Duhamel plays Adam Rogers, a reality show host who finds himself in an unusual situation.
Rogers is a Chris Harrison-like figure who hosts a dating show that ends in an attempted murder, wherein the runner-up tries to shoot and kill the winner.
As a result of Rogers' quick thinking, he is heralded as a "national hero" (here, James Franco plays an excitable morning show host who heaps praise on Rogers), and...

About the films:
Akira Kurosawa came into his own as a filmmaker directly following World War II, delving into the state of his devastated nation with a series of pensive, topical dramas. Amid Japan’s economic collapse and U.S. occupation, Kurosawa managed to find humor and redemption existing alongside despair and anxiety. As the New Year arrives, we salute a few favourite TV episodes depicting this momentous time of year...
New Year is a time for reflection on the past and resolution for the future, an opportunity to consider what you’ve achieved and what you’re yet to work on. It’s also a time to stay up well past midnight, partying the night away with friends and family, potentially embarrassing yourself in the process. That dichotomy ensures that the New Year is fertile ground for television, and the finest comedies and dramatic series use the moment to allow for contemplation amidst the alcoholic excesses. Here are twenty New Year episodes that offer an entertaining take on the aeons-old celebration - from emotional character pieces to geeky genre takes and old-fashioned barrages of seasonal comedy.

Remember when Grange Hill went to the Isle Of Wight? Or the escaped puma? Here are 12 memorable school trip episodes from the early years...
With just over thirty years worth of screen time, there are plenty of memorable moments in Grange Hill. From its inception in February 1978 the programme proved both entertaining and controversial. It tackled many difficult subjects head-on: bullying, vandalism, racism, censorship, shop-lifting, school uniform protest, teenage pregnancy and - most famously of all - drugs. However, every now and again it would attempt to give viewers a break from the everyday and head off on a day trip or weekend excursion.

This time of year, we would normally be gearing up for new episodes of Doctor Who. The last two seasons started on August 23rd and September 19th, respectively. But this year is different. Back in January it was announced that Series 10 of Doctor Who will not air until Spring of 2017. That means there will be a long 16 or so months separating the finale of Series 9 from the premiere of Series 10.
So what do we do during the wait? Well, there was another major announcement in January: Steven Moffat will be leaving Doctor Who and new showrunner Chris Chibnall will be taking over starting with Series 11. With Series 11 not coming until 2018, we have even longer to wait to see what his version of Doctor Who will look like. But it’s never too early to start doing your homework.

You might know him as the creator of Born & Bred, Law & Order: UK and Broadchurch amongst others, but as readers of this site, it's more likely that you know his scripts from Doctor Who and his tenure as head writer of Torchwood. Over the weekend alone, there has already been a lot written and said in speculation about what the new show-runner, Doctor Who's third since Russell T. Davies combined the roles of head writer and executive producer when he revived the series in 2005. I, for one, welcome our...

Clara: I don’t know where I am. It’s like I’m breaking into a million pieces and there is only one thing I remember: I have to save the Doctor. He always looks different. I always know it’s him. Sometimes I think I’m everywhere at once, running every second just to find him. Just to save him. But he never hears me. Almost never. I blew into this world on a leaf. I’m still blowing. I don’t think I’ll ever land. I’m Clara Oswald. I’m the impossible girl. I was born to save the Doctor. • The Name of the Doctor, Doctor Who, Series 7

After two years away from “Who,” time-travelling heartbreaker River Song (Alex Kingston) will return as The Doctor’s wife in this Christmas’ "Doctor Who" special.
River last appeared in Series 7, where she met Impossible Girl Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) and became separated from her parents, The Ponds (Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill). Some people (read: me) haven’t recovered since.
The upcoming Christmas special will be River’s first meet-up with The Doctor’s newest incarnation, played by Peter Capaldi (In the Loop, “The Thick of It”), and we cannot wait to see how that pans out. River’s never been in sync with The Doctor’s time travelling, so Capaldi’s recent adventures in time and space could be old news to her or brand new information. Either way, River has scored a hat-trick with the Christmas special, appearing in “Who” episodes with three Doctors: David Tennant, Matt Smith,...

Clara Oswald has certainly got tongues wagging – and in more ways than one – since she made her premature debut at the start of Series 7.
First introduced as an energetic, soufflé making… erm, Dalek, she didn’t even get to step aboard the Tardis before she was sensationally killed off in the very same episode and the shock twist laid the foundations for what soon became one of the biggest mysteries in Doctor Who history. Now, almost three years later, she’s about to embark on her third series as the Time Lord’s coveted companion and there really is an overriding sense that it’ll be third time lucky for everybody’s favourite impossible girl in Series 9.
It hasn’t been an easy ride to get to this point, though. Life as the Doctor’s sidekick is hard enough at the best of times but Clara really has...

Karen Gillan has firmly established herself as a formidable on screen force to be reckoned with since she became a household name for her co-starring role in Doctor Who.
After being zapped back in time by the Weeping Angels in Series 7, her career has been going from strength to strength across the (Amy) pond with breakthrough roles in a variety of mainstream movies and TV shows, including a short-lived sitcom which she helmed with enough confidence and gusto to affirm her presence as a lauded leading lady.

It’s been two years since audiences first sat back and watched the Eleventh Doctor and his relatively new companion, Clara, in Series 7’s The Rings of Akhaten. The episode had a lot to accomplish: it had to further the ongoing plotline of the Doctor trying to work out who or what Clara was whilst simultaneously making the viewers like her. Oh, and the story had to include a truly alien environment because the programme was being accused of always being set on Earth.
It’s a tall order and unsurprisingly the episode falls short of its goals, becoming one of the least liked stories since Fear Her. Admittedly, there is much to admire in The Rings of Akhaten and there are vocal fans who are blind to its many faults, but on balance it just isn’t very good. The story received mixed reviews when it was...

Karen Gillan became a household name when she was introduced into the Doctor Who hall of fame as Amy Pond back in 2010. She joined the series at the right time, too, as its ever growing success around the globe – most notably in America – meant that her portrayal of the Time Lord’s coveted companion gained her recognition across the pond (no pun intended), too, which has certainly worked in her favour since she left the reputable realms of the Whoniverse behind.
In fact, she’s established herself as an almighty on screen force to be reckoned with since she got zapped back in time by the Weeping Angels in the mid-Series 7 finale (nope, still not over it!) and her career has subsequently been going from strength to strength with no signs of slowing down any time soon.

In his post-farming days of AMC’s The Walking Dead, it’s not often that we see Rick Grimes without a gun in his hands or holster, but firearms aren’t the only items associated with the apocalyptic leader. Though its appearance on the series was brief, a rotary phone played an important part in Rick’s life back at the prison, and it accompanies one of McFarlane Toys’ newly revealed Series 7.5 figures.
The two Series 7.5 figures pictured below (via Entertainment Earth) are due out in August and are now available to pre-order for $14.99 apiece.

Top Gear and EastEnders topped the BBC iPlayer request charts over Christmas.
A record-breaking 227 million iPlayer requests were made over the period - not including those accessed via Sky or Virgin Cable - marking a 25% increase on December 2013.
"Because linear TV dominates over Christmas, it was mobiles and tablets which drove the greatest increase in BBC iPlayer usage, both delivering more requests than computers over Christmas week," said head of TV content for BBC iPlayer Victoria Jaye in a blog post.
"Tablets really dominated during Christmas week, with requests rising +31% week-on-week. As usual, we saw a spike in app downloads (150,000) on Christmas Day, as new gadgets were tried out."
The top 20 for BBC iPlayer requests over Christmas week was as follows:
1. Top Gear Patagonia Special, Part 1 - 2,078,700
2. EastEnders 25/12/2014 - 1,689,400

Ah, the 2012-2013 mid-series split. What a wonderful thing that was. Steven Moffat’s timely use of it furthered our belief that he was, indeed, the best thing to ever happen to Doctor Who and cemented his legacy as the greatest showrunner in the history of the BBC.
The statement above is, of course, facetious. If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, chances are you were actually spitting with rage. People were calling it the beginning of the end which was, of course, a tad reactionary as Series 8 has returned to form, even if one episode has been knocked off the end of the production schedule.
But upon rewatching the first half of Series 7, one thing in particular seems to strike the most eagle-eyed of fans as odd. In A Town Called Mercy, the Doctor and Rory mention an unseen adventure in which Rory left his phone...

Clara Oswald, also known as the impossible girl, has arguably been more of a factor in the Doctor’s life than any other companion to this point in either Classic or NuWho. While she was mostly familiar with Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor, she quickly began to accept the Doctor’s twelfth and current incarnation, as played by Peter Capaldi.
The Eleventh Doctor, at the time of meeting her for the third time in his incarnation’s timeline, considered her the only mystery worth solving and it wasn’t until the Series 7 finale The Name of the Doctor that the reason he had encountered this girl so many times finally came to pass.
The mystery had been solved and Clara had managed to come out the other side as a beloved fixture within the show’s mythology, however, if recent speculation are to be believed, her real life...

After 13 series, there have now been more than enough I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! winners to fill up their own all-star series.
They all had to endure creepy crawlies, tough Bushtucker Trials and mockery by Ant & Dec, but they all won the hearts of the nation for a couple of weeks.
Some of them may have fallen from grace since, while some have soared up the UK fame ranks. But who were the best champions from their respective series? Here's our just-for-fun, don't-take-it-too-seriously Top 13.
13. Carol Thatcher - Series 5 (2005)
Potentially the most surprising winner of the lot, no-one could have guessed that Margaret Thatcher's daughter would have been voted the nation's favourite.
Viewers were won over by how involved she was in the tasks, her no-nonsense attitude, and the fact that she was only up against Sid Owen and Cannon & Ball.

After 15 years away, Men Behaving Badly returns to our screens tonight (October 17) for a one-off sketch during the Stand Up To Cancer telethon on Channel 4.
During the 1990s, the sitcom became one of the most popular shows in the UK, at the height of lad culture, with Martin Clunes and Neil Morrissey creating one of the best TV bromances in Gary and Tony. It also holds the distinction of airing on three different channels (ITV, BBC One and Channel 4).
To celebrate its (brief) return, here are just a small collection of the show's most hilarious moments to influence you to binge on the boxset this weekend.
1. Sailing ('Drunk', Series 4)
While Dorothy (Caroline Quentin) prepares a romantic meal for Gary, he and Tony indulge in an epic drinking session at The Crown. Before heading back absolutely sloshed, they partake in a drinking game singing Rod Stewart's 'Sailing'. This should happen every night.

Doctor Who continues its finest run of form for years with Steve Thompson's Time Heist. Here's our spoiler-free review...
It's no real secret that Steve Thompson's pair of Doctor Who stories thus far have been fairly bumpily received. In particular, The Curse Of The Black Spot seemed to run out of steam long before the end, and was arguably the weakest entry in series 6. Series 7's Journey To The Centre Of The Tardis was better, but still attracted a few grumbles.
However, he's on far firmer footing with his latest adventure, as Doctor Who continues its finest run of form since series 5 with Time Heist. As the title suggests, it involves a heist, and a bit of time work.

With a show that’s run as long as ‘Doctor Who’ has, it’s easy to fall into a certain formula. Even without the decades worth of episodes before the 2005 reboot, a show entering its eighth series is a rare thing in Britain. Especially one that’s known for reinventing itself on numerous occasions. In doing so, it has allowed the show to reach a level of longevity that is pretty much unmatched by any other franchise. However, that doesn’t mean that the writers still aren’t prone to relying on old tropes and well-worn plot devices that are easy to fall back on.
Every time they raise the bar of creativity, they just make it that much harder to top themselves. So, rather than constantly looking for ways to up the ante, so to speak, what if they just made a lateral movement instead? In these modern times,...

Every time they raise the bar of creativity, they just make it that much harder to top themselves. So, rather than constantly looking for ways to up the ante, so to speak, what if they just made a lateral movement instead? In these modern times,...

What’s your favourite run of episodes in the Matt Smith era of Doctor Who? Perhaps you’re a fan of the “fairytale” Series 5, or the mindbending/stealing Series 6? It seems that the Tardis doesn’t like Clara. Just look at The Rings of Akhaten, or Hide (in which Clara calls her a “grumpy old cow”). Or better still, grab yourself the Series 7 boxset and watch the additional minisode, Clara and the Tardis, which sees them (sort of kinda ish) have a heart-to-heart. Then the Tardis throws a strop

The question of how far a person will go -- or how low a person will sink -- for large financial gain is one of the more prevalent and provocative questions in recent horror cinema. Eli Roth's Hostel series had a dark and compelling hook that showed how the very wealthy can toy with a person's flesh just because they need a new kick. More recently the excellently twisted thriller called Cheap Thrills offered a series of progressively more disturbing bribes and wagers.
The also fascinating Series 7: The Contenders (2001) offered murder for money, as did Roger Corman's delightful Death Race 2000 from 1975 and the half-decent remake from 2008. Going back as far as The Most Dangerous Game (1932), and probably earlier, the idea of murder as a financial "game" has been a hallmark of horror cinema. Over the past couple months here on Fearnet, we’ve taken a look at the top 10 must-own toys from most of the big horror franchises, including Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, Child’s Play, Evil Dead and, most recently, A Nightmare on Elm Street. Though that still leaves a couple franchises left to cover, we take a break from franchise horror today, to talk about toys based on either standalone films, or smaller franchises that haven’t even been given ten toys over the years.
So here are 10 more horror toys that no fan’s collection should be without!
We’ve talked about McFarlane’s Movie Maniacs here in this feature several times, which was the line that gave us the very first figures of many of our favorite horror icons. It was in 2001 that they released Series 4 of the Movie Maniacs line, which included a deluxe boxed set in tribute to Jaws.

If the 3rd annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards could be categorised as a David vs Goliath battle between The Rocket and The Great Gatsby, Goliath is the hands-down winner.
Baz Luhrmann.s opulent romantic drama won six awards tonight, for best film, director, adapted screenplay, lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio, supporting actor Joel Edgerton and supporting actress Elizabeth Debicki.
That.s in addition to the six awards in craft categories plus the Aacta award for outstanding achievement in visual effects bestowed on Luhrmann.s film on Tuesday.
Kim Mordaunt's The Rocket, which had 12 nominations versus 14 for Gatsby, had to be content with just one trophy, for Mordaunt.s original screenplay.
The outcome is likely to reignite the debate about the near-impossibility of comparing a lavishly-mounted 3D film financed by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, which cost $160 million, with an independently-funded Lao-set film from a first-time director budgeted at about $2 million.
