There have been Stephen King movies for almost as long as there have been Stephen King books. King's first novel "Carrie" arrived in 1974, and by 1976, a "Carrie" movie was burning up movie screens. King was still relatively obscure at the time, but as his publishing career continued, he became a household name. He also became a recognizable figure, thanks to public appearances on talk shows, TV commercials, and of course, cameos in movies. King's very first cameo appearance was in George A. Romero's "Knightriders," a movie about a ren faire where people joust on motorcycles instead of horses. In that film, King plays a character named Hoagie Man, who can be seen eating a hoagie in a rather disgusting fashion.
After that, King had a surprisingly large role in Romero's horror anthology film "Creepshow," which King wrote the screenplay for. There, he plays Jordy Verrill, a hick farmer who...

Remakes are always a tricky proposition. Some of the greats both in the horror genre and elsewhere are actually remakes, whether it’s a loose one or not. Be it The Magnificent Seven coming from Seven Samurai or The Thing being birthed into imitation dog from the Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks original. I talk about The Thing A Lot but obviously it’s for a reason. You could also throw The Fly in that same category too while we are here. Those are some of the examples of the good but unfortunately, things can go downhill and fast. You have harmless ones like the Friday the 13th remake or Texas Chainsaw, the annoyingly unnecessary like Halloween and Amityville Horror, or the egregiously awful like The Fog and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Like them or loathe them, or in our case both, they are here to stay, and each...

Everyone knows about Stephen King's big-screen adaptations, but what about the small screen?
Once upon a time, Stephen King was the king of the miniseries. TV networks (especially ABC) would throw a ton of money at King to churn out a lengthy adaptation of one of his novels, or even an original work that they could slap his name on. These days, the idea of the miniseries doesn't quite exist anymore — in the age of streaming, it's been replaced by the more prominent "limited series." But there was something special about those glory days when network TV could turn a new King adaptation into a major event. You couldn't just fire up a streaming service and watch whenever you wanted — you'd have to tune in at a specific date and time and watch it as it unfolded. Something like that will never happen again — those days are over, folks.

Nearly three decades ago, Stephen King stumbled upon a copy of Lars von Trier‘s Danish miniseries The Kingdom in a dusty Colorado video store. Roughly seven years later, ABC premiered Kingdom Hospital, the author’s own take on von Trier’s haunted hospital. While conceived as a miniseries, King was so excited about the project — developed alongside his Storm of the Century and Rose Red collaborators — that he was ready to start work on a second season. The series premiered strong, but ratings dwindled and ABC pulled the plug just months later.
Join The Losers’ Club as they unpack both the 13-episode series and King’s candid thoughts about the adaptation and its swift cancellation, which he detailed in a 2004 EW column. Steven Spielberg and Stephen King. Two artists at the very top of their fields. King: one of the best-selling authors of all time. Spielberg: the filmmaker who invented the blockbuster. How have these guys never worked together? Well, it's not for lack of trying. In fact, these titans have come very close to teaming up on several occasions. When Spielberg was writing "Poltergeist," he wanted King's help with the script. "It didn't work out because it was before the internet and we had a communication breakdown," King told EW.
Then there was "The Talisman," the fantasy novel King co-wrote with the late Peter Straub. Before the book even hit the shelves, Spielberg scooped up the rights — but neither a film nor a TV adaptation has ever materialized. "Several times he came very close to making it, and there were a lot of discussions about that," King said. It was...

Melanie Lynskey has posted her thoughts on Instagram about longtime friend Julian Sands, who was found dead in the Southern California mountains earlier this week.
Lynskey shared a photo of the pair and wrote about first meeting Sands while working on the 2002 movie Rose Red. She admitted being a bit starstruck as a big fan of Sands in the Oscar-nominated film, A Room with a View.
“I was so nervous I could barely speak to you,” she said. “When I did finally tell you what the movie/you meant to me, I was struck by your humility, your lack of ego, the absence of any grandstanding.”
The two became fast friends, Lynskey said, as she recalled their blossomig friendship.
“You bought me so many presents, mostly huge and intimidating non-fiction books and classical music CDs. You found out I’d never been to the opera, and so you came to...

The Yellowjackets star shared a throwback photo of her and Sands dancing on Instagram and opened up about being nervous to meet him for the first time on the set of the miniseries Rose Red in 2000.

Not many horror films truly scare me these days. But alien horror? Even the ones substandard to most send me into a fear frenzy. That’s why I’m taking a deep dive into the sub-genre.

"Poltergeist" is a cinematic Rorschach test. Which scene was scarier, the maggoty meat or the evil clown doll? What does the film say about the values of 1980s American suburbia? Most importantly of all, did Tobe Hooper direct the film, or did producer Steven Spielberg do it on the sly? Director Mick Garris insists it was Hooper, but "Poltergeist" camera assistant John R. Leonetti says Spielberg. Film critic Scout Tafoya claims in "Cinemaphagy," his book covering Hooper's film career, that "Poltergeist" is Hooper's movie but has some distinctly Speilbergian touches.
There is another "Poltergeist" that never quite came into being. Early in the film's production, Spielberg decided that he needed help writing the script. In search of a horror expert, he turned to Stephen King, whose works at the time were tearing up the country's bestseller charts. King was away at the time, and by the time he returned, Spielberg had moved on.

This year Showtime amassed a total of 17 Primetime Emmy nominations, the biggest chunk of which are for the new drama series “Yellowjackets.” The show could potentially score wins in six categories, including Best Drama Series and Best Drama Actress. That lead performing prize would go to Melanie Lynskey, who has now finally been recognized by the TV academy after two steady decades of small-screen work.

There's another Stephen King movie on the way! His novella, The Gingerbread Girl, is the latest story of his to get picked up for a feature film adaptation. The rights to the story were snatched up by Brainstorm Media.
The Gingerbread Girl was originally published in Esquire magazine and was later included in King’s 2008 collection of stories Just After Sunset.
For those of you not familiar with the story, it focuses on a woman named Emily, who is "recovering from a recent loss in a secluded house in the loneliest stretch of New England. She avoids contact with her husband and her father and channels her grief into a grueling daily running regimen. This is doing her all kinds of good, until one day she makes the mistake of looking into the driveway of a man named Pickering. Pickering also enjoys privacy, but the young women he brings to...

The 71st annual Cannes Film Festival commenced earlier this week, and having already sold a piece of his oeuvre during the festivities, another Stephen King short story has officially gone off the market, The Gingerbread Girl.
Earlier this week, Netflix closed a deal for In the Tall Grass, a novella written by King and his son, fellow bestselling horror author, Joe Hill. Today, Deadline is reporting that The Gingerbread Girl, which was originally published in Esquire magazine, has been optioned by Us production and distribution company, Brainstorm Media.
Frequent collaborator, Craig R. Baxley, who has helmed several other King adaptations, including Storm of the Century (1999), Kingdom Hospital (2004) and Rose Red (2002), will direct the film from a screenplay written by both he and the author.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a time-honoured story that’s gone on to become a fixture of Disney’s prestigious archive – but what of her sister Rose Red?
From what we understand, the House of Mouse has now hatched a live-action “companion piece” designed to tell the famous tale from the perspective of Rose, with screenwriters Justin Merz and Evan Daugherty – creative mind behind Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman – developing a revisionist take on the classic fairytale.
It’s still early, early days for the project, but tonight, we’re hearing that the studio has their eye on Captain Marvel star Brie Larson for the titular role. Though this scoop doesn’t come to us from Disney itself, it does make sense, given Larson’s connection to the House of Mouse via her involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I didn’t remember Neil Gaiman’s story “Troll Bridge” well. In fact, if you’d asked me about it, I would have assumed some confusion on your part with Terry Pratchett’s short story “Troll Bridge,” and tried to lead you in that direction.
But story titles can’t be copyrighted, and even good friends can use the same ones without stress or strife. I’d forgotten it, but Gaiman did also write a story titled “Troll Bridge,” originally for the Datlow/Windling anthology Snow White, Rose Red in 1993 and collected a number of times since then. And, since Gaiman has a huge audience in comics that might not be as familiar with his just-prose works — or, at least, there are publishers willing to bet that’s the case — a number of his short stories have been turning into short graphic novels from Dark Horse over the past few years.

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs gets added to the list of live action takes on Disney animated hits...
In a surprise to pretty much nobody on planet Earth, it’s been revealed that Disney has added a live action take on Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs to its collection of remakes of its animated classics. The news follows the announcement of a live action The Lion King last month.
The only slight shock in this instance, really, is that it’s taken so long. Still, the studio’s original animated success is set to be put into the hands of screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson, who was the scribe who adapted The Girl On The Train for the big screen.
No director has been announced at this stage.
We do know who’s going to be song-writing duties, though. The pairing of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul...

Suicide Squad: Reportedly, new footage for Suicide Squad is being shot right now with the goal of altering the tone of the movie to bring in "more of the lightness to which audiences responded" in an early trailer. The idea is to beef up "fun character moments and interactions." Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis star; the movie will open in theaters on August 5. Fairytale revisions are still all the rage in Hollywood. Yet another live-action take on Snow White's classic tale has just been picked up by Disney, according to THR. The script — written by Justin Merz — was originally focused on Rose Red, another protagonist from Grimm's Fairytale with no relation to Snow White. Until writer Evan Daugherty got an idea. I know, I know. You're rolling your eyes at the thought. But Daugherty has already tweaked the Snow White story before with Snow White and the Huntsman (which I really liked) and the upcoming The Huntsman: Winter's War (which I'm dying to see). He was also one of the writers on Divergent (another fave) and he's prepping the new Tomb Raider. All of that tells me that he's committed to giving ladies some kickass stories and this new Rose Red adaptation sounds like that's exactly what we're looking at. This time around,...

In a time when it seems people are finally starting to sicken of sequels generally, and revisiting bare wells specifically, another spin on Snow White might not be quite what everyone is desperate to see, but Disney has something in mind they think will be a treat.
Besides, Disney is pretty fond of getting all they can out of whatever wells they have.
The story here is actually a reworking of the classic tale that has Snow White’s sister, Rose Red, trying to break the curse at the end of the story you know.
The film is going to be produced by Tripp Vinson, who seems to be aiming at a specific, well-centric label. Already working on a prequel to Aladdin, and a film that focuses on Prince Charming, Vinson’s production studio is going to great lengths to build its own pigeonhole of fairy tale revision.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is developing a new film based on the character Snow White's estranged sister, Rose Red. The screenplay was written by Justin Merz which included a pitch from Evan Daugherty. Daugherty's credits include Universal Pictures' "Snow White And The Huntsman", Paramount Pictures' "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", and Summit Entertainment's "Divergent."
This take on the Snow White classic is said to be:
"A revisionist take that transposes Rose Red into the Snow White tale, making her a key player in the later part of the classic story. When Snow White takes a bite from the iconic poison apple and falls into her Sleeping Death, her estranged sister, Rose Red, must undertake a dangerous quest with Grumpy and the other dwarves to find a way to break the curse and bring Snow White back to life."
Tripp Vinson is producing via his Vinson Films banner.

Disney is adding a live action Snow White tale to its roster - albeit with a bit of a twist...
The week before Snow White And The Huntsman follow-up The Huntsman lands in cinemas from Universal, and we’ve got the news that Disney is going back into the Snow White business.
It’s got a film in the stove called Rose Red, the idea for which originally came from Evan Daugherty, who penned the two Huntsman movies. Justin Merz has taken over scripting duties, and the film will focus on the Grimm fairy tale character of Rose Red. The twist, though, is she’s now Snow White’s estranged sister.
Thus, the Snow White story is set to be retold, with Rose Red coming into the tale as the person who tries to break Snow White’s curse when she eats the poison apple.

Fans of Snow White are not going to pleased. Following on from The Huntsman: Winter’s War’s decision to do away with Kristen Stewart’s Snow White entirely in favor that film's supporting players, we’ve now learned that Disney’s own live-action adaptation will instead primarily revolve around Snow White’s sister, Rose Red, instead of the traditional heroine. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has decided to pick up this project after being hugely impressed by a pitch by Evan Daugherty based on Justin Merz’s script. Usually overshadowed by her more famous sister, the character of Rose Red actually appeared in a number of The Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales. None of these were related to Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, which Disney iconically brought to life back in 1937. However, while Justin Merz originally wrote a ...

With Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman" essentially taking out Disney's chance at a gritty, live-action revisionist take on their classic animated "Snow White" film, the studio has decided to adopt a different approach.
The studio has picked up both a script by Justin Merz and a pitch by 'Huntsman' script writer Evan Daugherty which reworks the tale. The story? A revisionist take which focuses on Rose Red, a sister to Snow White.
Though Rose Red is a character that appeared in Grimms fairy tales, it is in an adventure that had no relation to the more well known "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves". Merz's penned 'Red' as a stand-alone feature, but then Daugherty came up with a new take which makes the story closer and more of a "companion piece" to the animated "Snow White".

Hollywood can't seem to get away from Snow White. In 2012 audiences were served with two movies about the fairy tale character: "Mirror Mirror" and "Snow White And The Huntsman." Four years later, we're getting a prequel to that latter film with "The Huntsman: Winter's War," which the marketing has made clear will tell us about the story before Snow White. Now, Disney is cooking up a movie that will be a sideways look at the character. THR reports that the mouse house is developing "Rose Red," which will focus on Snow White's sister. Hooray? The live action movie will come from the pen Evan Daughtery ("Snow White And The Huntsman," ironically enough), who took an original pitch by Justin Merz titled "Red" and tied it into the original fairy tale. Snow White has a sister, and she's getting a movie.
It's news to us that the Disney Princess has a sister, appropriately named "Rose Red", but apparently she exists in the original Grimm's fairy tales, and she's going to be the main focus in a revisionist telling of the original Snow White story.
We all believed it was Prince Charming that saved Snow White from the Evil Queen's poisonous apple, but inFrozen-like fashion, this film has Snow White being saved by her sister. We're loving the promotion of sisterly bonds, strong women, and women who help another out being incorporated into Disney films lately. Rose Red looks like it'll follow in the steps of turning fairytale conventions on their heads, and giving strong messages to young girls.

40 years ago today, Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams schlemiel-schlamazeled their way into TV history when “Laverne & Shirley” premiered on ABC. Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney, two roommates who worked as bottle-cappers in Milwaukee, had made their debut on “Happy Days” the November before their own spin-off started airing on January 27, 1976. The zany antics of “Laverne & Shirley” quickly shot to No. 1 in the ratings, even surpassing the viewership of “Happy Days.” Williams departed the show after she became pregnant with her first child. As to why she left instead of scheduling around the birth of her baby, Williams has said, “When it came time for me to sign my contract for that season, they had me working on my due date to have my baby. And I said, ‘You know, I can't sign this.’ And it went back and forth and back and forth and it just never got worked out.
