The film was banned in China for eight years.
Filmed and completed in 1996 but did not premiere until 2000 when the film was smuggled into the Locarno Film Festival by the festival director. The film won a Golden Leopard, beating many films in competition.
Though it was never confirmed by writer-director Wang Shuo, the film and Wang's own novel has been seen as an interpretation of China and its authority.
