In art, as in life, consistency is not a quality that is easily obtainable. In the life that is created in Vishal Bhardwaj’s art the characters are so flawed and fractured and so driven down to destruction by their own demoniacal desires that you fear they would collapse under the weight of their own ambitions and longings.
This is true as much of the characters as the director himself. Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest arguably his most ambitious film to date could have ended up being the Bombay Velvet/Mohenjo Daro of 2017. It is rescued, no redeemed, by an excruciatingly exquisite perception of the wounds and lashes that love pelts down on those who are its victims.

Read More: 'Trumbo' Star Bryan Cranston is Still Just Happy to Get Work In the life of all boyz, there comes a day when they look into a mirror and realize that today, they are M3N. James Corden, Bryan Cranston and Reggie Watts shined a light on this epochal moment on Thursday night's "The Late Late Show," performing as "man band" M3n Not Boyz. Retaining the sinuous vocals and decadent dance moves of men of slightly less than their age, M3n Not Boyz performed their chart-topper "I Can't Be Your Boy (Cuz I'm a Grown Man)." The silky song is an ode to all of the cool grown man things a guy can do for his lady, once he realizes that he's the old kid on the block, so it's time to say bye, bye, bye to youth. These grown M3n may not understand Cross Fit or Edm,...

I never had a crisis of faith, because I never had any real faith in the first place. My parents were not wildly religious, but it was important to their lives in a general sense. My father's mother was a church organist, and my mother's mother was active in her own church in any number of ways. Both of my grandmothers lived in Memphis, so when we'd visit them, we'd have to make sure to schedule a trip long enough to show up at each of their churches at least once, just so they got to show off their grandchildren to their friends. In the life of my parents, church always seemed to serve primarily a social function. We moved frequently because of my dad's work as an engineer, and every place we moved, they became active in their local church. Each time, they made friends and they found a...

CineLink head Amra Baksic Camo discusses the trends around this year’s edition.
The Sarajevo Film Festival is preparing to host the 13th edition of CineLink (Aug 19-22), a development and financing platform that provides the backbone of its industry section, featuring around 25 projects suited for co-production.
The selection - split between a co-production market and work in progress event - has traditionally focused on Southeast Europe but has opened up in recent years to projects from the Caucasus region, while this year will see two projects from Doha and one from Russia.
Ahead of today’s start of this year’s edition, Amra Baksic Camo, head of CineLink, told ScreenDaily she was proud of the mix on offer this year.
“We have an exciting combination of experienced filmmakers and first-timers,” she said. “That is the role of every CineLink: to combine recognisable faces where you know in advance there is quality with fresh discoveries that people...

The River
Written by Rumer Godden and Jean Renoir
Directed by Jean Renoir
France/India/USA, 1951
As the camera looks down upon an ornamental design created from rice powder and water, the narrator (voiced by June Hillman), who speaks throughout the film, welcomes us to the world of The River. This is Bengal, “where the story really happened,” and this is Harriet speaking, reflecting back on her life at a very confusing and significant time. For all intents and purposes, The River is primarily her story. And in this, the film is an intimately personal cinematic memoir. But The River is also something else. In its depiction of the “river people” who inhabit this region of India, the film also takes on an ethnographic appeal, capturing the “flavor” of the setting and its inhabitants.

The Bosnian Oscar winner has offered his services as producer to a Middle Eastern project at the Doha Film Institute’s inaugural Qumra Masters sessions.
Speaking to Screen, Tanovic said he was so impressed by one project he mentored that he wanted help it get made. He declined to name the project until his involvement was confirmed.
“Most of the stories we’ve seen on screen from the Middle East have been made by European or American film-makers…it’s so important for them to develop their industry,” said Tanovic.
“I think the Gulf and the Middle East is a goldmine that hasn’t been investigated yet.”
Tanovic, who served as a mentor at the Qumra event connecting film-makers with industry experts, said he had seen how an event like the Sarajevo Film Festival helped local film-makers in the Balkans, particularly the co-production market CineLink.

The Americans Season 2, Episode 5 “The Deal”
Written by Angelina Burnett
Directed by Dan Attias
Airs Wednesday nights at 10pm Et on FX
A fundamental lesson for any “budding capitalist” (I’m talking to you, Oleg) is understanding the concept of value: and in the spy world, this idea does not boil down to dollars and cents, but advancements of principles and ideologies. With the life and loyalties of the very valuable mind of a Jewish physicist living in the United States available for trade, “The Deal” is an episode about value – not only what these characters value in their world, but how easy it is to reduce human life to a single metric, fighting a war to “save” humanity in the most inhumane way possible, another fascinating hour in a season of The Americans that’s beginning to build towards larger stories.

With the premiere of HBO’s Looking still over a week away, this is the perfect time to remember another TV series about a group of gay (and straight) friends in San Francisco. It was 20 years ago today that Tales Of the City made its American television debut.
Based on the newspaper column–later book series–by Armistead Maupin, Tales centers around a found family living together in a boarding house at 28 Barbary Lane. Tenants include Mary Anne Singleton, a naive girl fresh off the bus from Cleveland, Michael “Mouse” Tolliver, a gay emigré from Florida, his best friend Mona Ramsey, a frustrated feminist copywriter, and Brian Hawkins, a leftie lawyer who dropped out and became a waiter. They all live under the eye of enigmatic landlady Anna Madrigal. Tales stars Laura Linney as Mary Anne, Marcus D’Amico as Mouse, Chloe Webb as Mona, Paul Gross as Brian and Olympia Dukakis as Mrs.

It's the cat. It ties the room together.
I'm talking about the cat in Inside Llewyn Davis. And by "room" I mean "movie." Without the cat, this film would feel structureless and almost entirely unlikeable. Its success as a plot device is a testament to the writing and directing powers of Joel and Ethan Coen.
The title character, played by Oscar Isaac, is a jerk and a moocher. He's knocked up his friend's wife (Carey Mulligan), he insults most of the people around him, he "does not suffer fools and likes to see fools suffer."* His longtime musical partner gone, he's trying to pursue a solo career and fumbles nearly every crucial decision, almost tragically. He would be wholly despicable were it not for two things, one of which is the way he treats that cat.
Llewyn feels responsible for the cat after it escapes from an apartment where he's staying,...

Top brass at the 25th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (Psiff) have announced a new programme on Canadian Cinema as well as the traditionally strong roster of foreign-language films eligible for the Fipresci Award in the Awards Buzz section, and Modern Masters.
The festival will screen 45 of the 76 official foreign-language Oscar submissions under the umbrella of Awards Buzz.
“We’ve selected Canadian films for a special focus at this year’s festival for many reasons, not the least of which is the wealth of talent emerging from its relatively small, indigenous film industry, and the depth and richness of story and character portrayal its films exemplify,” said festival director Darryl Macdonald.
“Whether it’s established auteurs like Denis Coté, Denis Villenueve and Atom Egoyan, gifted actor-directors like Don McKellar and Sarah Polley or newly emerging talents like Chloé Robichaud, Craig Goodwill and Sébastien Pilote, Canadian creative ingenuity is on abundant display in its films. All of this...

Buck Angel documentary ‘Mr. Angel’ - about the life of the transgender adult star - available on DVD in December In the United States, it’s Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, November 28, 2013. It’s an inspirational time of the year for millions, so what’s more appropriate than the December 3 release of QC Cinema’s DVD Mr. Angel? Directed by Dan Hunt, Mr. Angel is described in the film’s press release as "an inspirational story of rare perseverance" that features "an unlikely hero": Buck Angel, himself described as a "transgender advocate, educator, and porn pioneer." As found in the SXSW Film Festival’s synopsis of Mr. Angel, Buck Angel "was born female yet always knew he was male." His parents raised him as a boy until he reached adolescence, and that’s when things took a downhill turn: drug addiction, homelessness, suicide attempts. Eventually, Buck Angel underwent a double mastectomy.

The Toronto International Film Festival has set its Contemporary World Cinema lineup featuring the best in cinema from around the globe. Here are the films: A Place In Heaven (Makom be-gan eden) Yossi Madmony, Israel North American Premiere. Jewish religious law permits the trade of a seemingly non-transferrable concept: another person’s place in heaven. A Wolf At The Door (O Lobo atrás da Porta) Fernando Coimbra, Brazil World Premiere. A child is kidnapped. Danis Tanovic, director of the Oscar-winning No Man's Land (2001), brings a shocking real story to the big screen with his latest film, An Episode In The Life Of An Iron Picker. The film was a great success at the Berlin Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear Jury Grand Prix for Tanovic and Best Actor Award for Nazif Mujic, as well as Special Mention for Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. It feels like a personal film and the subject matter is clearly one that is dear to Tanovic's heart. The film is a micro-budget docudrama that carries important messages. Shot on handheld camera, viewers get to take a close look at a socially underprivileged Roma family in Bosnia and Herzegovina living in conditions that...

Mother Monster is readying her next tour, the Born This Way Ball.
Lady Gaga took to Twitter to let her fans know that on Tuesday, she will unleash images of the stage design for the tour, which is set to launch later this year. She added that she was brewing up a number of other tour-related projects and wrote, "putting the set list together!"
Over the last few weeks, Gaga has been tweeting frequently about the upcoming outing, noting that she's been in meetings with her Haus and watching old Monster Ball Tour videos that "made us cry. We love u, can't wait for the next one."
Haus member and Btw producer Fernando Garibay shared with MTV News in December that the show will be reflective of the 2011 album.

Good morning!
If you have cable, you'll be privy to the ID Channel's new series on gruesome murders, which includes one about actual lesbian vampire killers in Australia. I'm so going to watch all 26 episodes of Killer Trials: Judgement Day, although I think they could have picked a better name.
Out Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy has won the Costa Poetry Prize. Between her and Kay Ryan, lesbians are winning all the poetry awards!
Aubrey O'Day has joined the new season of Celebrity Apprentice and she'll be playing for Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (Glsen). If she wins, all the money goes to them, the charity of her choice. Go Aubrey!
Meghan and Cindy McCain have posed again for NOH8, in case you forgot they support marriage quality.
While we're on the subject of politics, Rachel Maddow did an impeccable job reporting on the Iowa Caucuses for MSNBC last night.
