Gumnaam advertises itself as a horror thriller. Well. It's not. There are about 2 minutes that were really thrilling. Most of the time the movie was not as scary as it would have liked to be. But who cares?! I found it entertaining and I think if you understand all that is said and don't have to rely on subtitles you might even find it more funny, especially every time Mehboob as the butler is on screen. My favorites in this film were Helen and Pran. In many films they get only short roles, it was great to see them on the screen for so long - and even flirting :-) Of course Helen having several song-and-dance scenes is a BIG plus for Gumnaam. And the other songs are good as well. No need to add anything about Jan Paheehan Ho....!

Don't watch this film if you are against smoking and drinking... I've never seen so many people smoking in a film! And even the girls are "corrupted" into drinking alcohol. How shocking! ;-) But hey, if it results in a cool song, that's fine with me!

Gumnaam may not be the best film ever produced ever in Mumbai but it's definitely entertaining and has great music!

The movie starts out simple enough. A man stands at a balcony and smokes a cigarette while watching a drunk man (coming out of a nightclub/bar) getting run over with a car. This is all intentional. The man on the balcony goes inside, pays someone for the death of the man on the street and then proceeds to call a whole bunch of people to let them know the man has died. In the middle of the phone call to the dead man's niece, a strange man in a trench coat, hat and gloves comes in and shoots the man.

After this we get the most famous scene of this movie : the dance scene that was shown in Ghost World. Its a crazy 60's rock n' roll dance number, complete with a girl dressed in a gold dress with frills, male dancers dressed in black suits with white frill shirts, female backup dancers in pink dresses with frills and a lounge singer dressed in a white suit with black tie. They are all wearing black masks. The song is quite catchy and makes you wanna get up and dance (or if you prefer, dance in your seat).

After the dance number (for the silver anniversary of the club), seven people are "randomly" chosen to go on an exclusive holiday abroad. On the way to the location, the plane has to land for repairs (it lands in the middle of a field somewhere). When the plane unexpectedly leaves, the seven "castaways" (8 if you count the Ray Romano looking steward) look around. They discover a mansion in the middle of nowhere, where a butler/cook awaits their arrival (and knows all theirs names except for the steward).

I would classify this movie as a Bollywood version of an Agatha Christie type suspense mystery. In typical Bollywood fashion this would include several dance and musical numbers. This is a very enjoyable twist on the whole mystery genre. It is true that the music and dancing does distract one from the mystery and reduces the tension. At the same time, I was enjoying the dance/musical numbers too much too care. By far my favorite dance/musical number (other than the opening one) would be the drunken singing scene between Miss Kitty and Nanda. I also loved the product placement of the movie. It is quite evident how much "Hollywood" items are used as items of social stature in other cultures. For example, the Cool cigarettes and the Long John whiskey. It is also quite comical to witness the amount of tobacco smoked in this movie (several black lung's worth). This is a very enjoyable movie and the 180 minutes rush by. I highly recommend this movie.

Loosely inspired from Agatha Christie's novel 'And Then There Were None', Raja Nawathe's Gumnaam was a well executed suspense thriller with right blend of other bollywood elements like comedy and songs. A group of people are stranded on an island and discover a mansion there which has a comic butler (Mehmood) who is already aware about them. One by one, the guys are bumped off and they keep suspecting each other till only two remain...

Manoj Kumar played an air purser who gets stranded with this ill fated group. Nanda as his love interest is supposedly the film's heroine but the lady who stole the show was Helen looking drop dead gorgeous as Kitty who quite a few men take fancy to. Note her sizzling 'Kitty Kelly' song on the beach. Pran was great as her alcoholic suitor while Manmohan was his usual slimy self.

Gumnaam is more famous for Shankar Jaikishen's music particularly the 'Hum Kaale Hain Toh Kya Hua Dilwale Hain' picturised on the legendary Mehmood Saahab in his Hyderabadi avatar. Mehmood literally owned the character with his typical mannerisms and it became a rage so much than even Amitabh Bachchan emulated it in Manmohan Desai's Desh Premee (1982). No doubt, Mehmood hogged the limelight in every scene he appeared and there were rumors that lead actor Manoj Kumar was not too happy with it and even tried convincing Raja Nawathe to delete the "Hum Kaale hain.." song from the film..

Another super hit song by Shankar Jaikishen 'Jaan Pehchaan Ho Jeena Aasan Ho" is my personal favorite despite its Beatles hangover.

Interestingly, the films climax makes use of Russian roulette game a decade before Salim Javed immortalized it in Sholay (1975).

Gumnaam makes for a good one time watch with family. Incidentally, I saw it first with my parivaar in mid 80s on DD National. The film still retains its charm like before..

Interested in all things related to Ghost World after seeing that great unhyped movie last summer, I recently stumbled across Gumnaam which was available via Indiaweekly.com at a very reasonable price. It arrived yesterday, and I had intended to pop it in the DVD player just to check it out for a minute or two -- instead I was drawn in, and watched the entire 2 1/2 hours straight through.

This colorful movie is basically a routine thriller in which each member of a group of strangers is mysteriously murdered, one after another, until we find out who is ultimately responsible and why. What makes this movie stand out are the very unusual musical numbers, especially the first one entitled "Jaan Pehechaan Ho" which was featured prominently in the opening sequence of Ghost World. I can't recommend this movie overall, but that one particular bizarre Sixties Hindu rock dance number is worthy of praise. Thank you, Ghost World!

7 Stars only because it's a 1964 flick, so not as advance as it has to be. All culprits in the lonely mansion are enjoying, eating and having fun, although they have been made aware that each one of them will be killed!

Except for last 15-20 minutes, grip of this so-called thriller movie is poor. Mehmood's role and comedy are totally insignificant, and boring at times!

Motto of the serial murders is not very convincing. Overall plot and opening sequences are good.

Unlike in today's movies, detailing is very poor, script succums at many places. When secret of the murders us being revealed, it's not at all shown, how all these murders were done!! Each victim was carrying a wrapon or poison! For what?? They were anyway on a sponsored foreign pleasure trip!!

May be it was a novelty movie then, so went on becoming superhit! Music by Shanker Jaikishan is always fabulous, superb here, especially the title song ... mind blowing, suits perfectly to the theme of the movie!👌👍 And yeah, at times, you start wondering, who is the real heroine of this movie, Nanda or Helen?! And, who is hero, Manoj Kumar or Pran??!!😷

HOW could anyone not love GUMNAAM? The most sensational dance number ever to open a serial killer movie "Jan Pennechaan Ho" and the fabulous Glomesh Ganesh in a gold Lame dress, Zorro boys and India's answer to Little Richard kick start GUMNAAM off to a musical start start unmatched in movie history. There even seems to be the wives and aunties of the producers as chorus girls, all out of step in their purple frilly dresses - and Zorro masks. Not even the superb 1955 plaster nightclub decor (made in 1965) or the (laughing bird) Kookaburra sounds (often heard in Tarzan films) clutter this most exuberant of nightclub dance numbers. The lead singer even throws himself on the floor and convulses - all in tune! The "Anything Goes" opening of INDIANA JONES TEMPLE OF DOOM can't even match this for 'out of your seat' shocko bizarro, because from then on GUMNAAM busies itself with a literally 'and then there were none' plot. There is a haunted mansion, ghosts and nooses from nowhere. The Mantan Moreland style kitchen hand Mamood, has the other major dance number, a tiki-himialyan Esther Williams inspired heavenly fantasy of meeting dancing virgins atop a spearmint plaster stairway held up with dancing plaster fish. All to tikka tikka boo bongo music Just beyond belief. What about the Two drunk girls who decide to sing about how funny it is to be drunk in a haunted house with a killer on the loose! Imagine THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT meets 'TEN LITTLE INDIANS' via MURDER ON THE ORIENT-NILE-GANGES and you might get slightly close. Find GUMNAAM. Show it to all your friends. IF only Hollywood was this much fun. Well it was, once wasn't it. This gets a 10 out of 10 just for the two dance numbers alone. The other 145 minutes are a bonus.

Gumnaam (1965) : Brief Review -

Christie's novel "And Then There Were None" was brought to full screen in American cinema in 1945, and after 2 decades, Bollywood woke up with the idea of making it a commercial blockbuster. Yes, we did it. Raja Nawathe gathered an ensemble cast of Manoj Kumar, Nanda, Mehmood, Pran, Helen, Madan Puri, Tarun Bose, Dhumal, and Manmohan. The script remains mostly unchanged, with a few changes here and there. In the novel, the 10 people are invited together, while here they are brought there by a conspiracy. The murder spree is the same, but Gumnaam powers itself with a proper commercial angle and some great musical numbers. "Gumnaam Hai Koi" is an iconic song, and it runs for like throughout the film. "Hum Kaale Hai To" is an evergreen chartbuster, and what a freaking grand setup it has. We have Mehmood nailing his characters and steps, and we have Helen nailing her looks and dance moves in the same song. What a great art design and fantastic choreography! Helen adds her sex appeal to the film, especially in "Gham Chhodke Manaao Rang" and that drunk song, which I didn't like much. Nanda is as gorgeous as ever, and her chemistry with Manoj Kumar is indeed beautiful. How sexy she looks in that rain song! These are the things that Hollywood couldn't have. That's the only way Bollywood got ahead of Hollywood, and I'm glad that we did. However, Gumnaam isn't as pacy as the American adaptation of the novel. Still, we have some great moments here. Who would have imagined that an eerie murder mystery could have been transformed into an audience friendly box office hit? Raja Nawathe and team Gunmaan did it. Today's filmmakers need to learn from old Bollywood how to make Hollywood adaptations in Hindi cinema.

This is one amazing movie which any body can see and any number of times. It has thrill, shrill with little bit of first class comedy by Mehmood n team.

Story is of 10 Indians who goes on to a tour sponsored by a company and there starts the drama when one by one people starts disappearing and getting killed.

The songs of the movie are equally good and entertaining. Helen is beautiful. Nanda and Manoj Kumar are good. Pran is one amazing actor who can get into any character which so much ease. Mehmood...... is all time best. His timings are just impeccable.

And climax is equally satisfying. Don't miss it !! And don't go by Mr Theatre X's comments..... he is just ignorant about facts and figures. :)

Basically an adaptation of Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians," this film is highlighted by one of the greatest, most euphoric rock 'n' roll dance sequences ever, which was featured in the opening credits of Terry Zwigoff's excellent "Ghost World."

Of course nothing can be taken seriously here, as the characters get murdered one by one, they still find the time to have a beach party and stage elaborate musical numbers. There are some terrific musical fantasy numbers, but of course the "Jan Pehechaan Ho" scene featured in "Ghost World" is by far the best.

About ten years ago, my brother and I were sick with the flu and surfing the endless satalite channels when we came across this movie and could not change the channel. We laughed all day and days to come: imitating the dance with the masked men and the lady in the obnoxious gold dress. And I was laughing again when I saw it again a few months ago in Ghost World. You think the abstract direction of the sixties was bazaare and silly- check out what was going on in India.

Hailing from Bollywood, Gumnaam is a true classic. No, my friends, not because of grand acting or good lighting, but how utterly horrible it is makes me laugh so hard. I watched this last Thanksgiving with most of my family, and some of us were rolling on the ground in laughter. It's like the "Plan 9" of India. Beware, fellow film buffs, and witness the most entertaining cinema piece to come out of India EVER!

As bollywood has done before they've ruined the movie by adding their own element and disrupting the entire story. They reversed the role of the protagonist. Plot was twisted but in a awful way.

It's rather unusual seeing a Bollywood musical that features a thriller story in it. On the one hand it's also a real ridicules movies but it does work out in its own kind of way. It manages to create a likable, light, atmosphere, with a mystery story weaved into it, that keeps things going at all time.

I'm not even a big fan of 'normal' musical, let alone Bollywood musicals. However the songs in this movie are actually quite good to listen to and besides, some of them actually do serve a purpose for the movie its story.

It's a movie with a pretty good premise in it, that I'm sure some big Hollywood producers would had been jealous off. Thriller and mystery wise it really is a great concept, even though the movie really always doesn't put that much emphasize on its thriller and mystery elements.

Also in the end, the story itself really doesn't make much sense. It leaves far too many questions and the concept suddenly actually seems pretty far fetched. Besides, even though this is a mystery movie, I can't really say that the movie has lots of surprises in it. It was pretty obvious who the killer was from the start on, due to the incredible unconvincing 'disguise' that he is wearing. The only mystery of the movie is why the other characters in this didn't noticed this.

It's also quite ridicules how all of the characters aren't busy trying to find the killer, even though they know the are all going to get killed one by one, or try to find a way of the island. No. they are all just to busy swimming, eating, falling in love and singing and dancing to songs. But when you watch a Bollywood movie you know that you have to take all these things for granted. I did just that and was quite taken by the overall movie experience.

Once you surrender yourself to this movie, you'll find it a quite pleasant movie experience. Its basically a great mixture of some cheerful fun and a bit of a darker story. But did it really needed to be so long? None of these Bollywood movies should be so long really but that is what happens when you show a reaction shot of every character every time that something happened. And there are 9 main characters in this movies...

Yes, it really is a quite clumsily made movie at times, with its directing, camera-work and editing but also this does quite often add to the charm and movie experience of this movie. So even the bad things about this movie can work out as something positive, which says something about the effective this movie has on you while you are watching it. I think it's fair to say that you really don't have to be into Bollywood movies to watch and enjoy this one.

It's also a movie that uses some nice settings. It's in no way a cheap looking movie, with fake looking sets in it, even though the movie probably didn't cost an awful lot to make. It shows that is pays off to shoot your movie mostly on location, rather than somewhere on the back of a studio lot.

Despite of all my criticism, I really did surprisingly enjoy this movie!

"Gumnaam" was a very good "Whodunit"movie with excellent performances by everyone and lovely songs to add to its excellence. To date,it remains one of my favourite "Whodunit"movies!

Directed by Raja Nawathe, this old classic thriller is one of the best movies of Hindi cinema. It has a lot of good and exciting scenes that will give goosebumps. The element of mystery around the group of people will give you multiple reasons to watch it twice. The secrets of every individual are the best part of the movie. Some scenes will frighten you and will leave you fearful.

Actors like veteran senior actor Mahmoodji are worth praising. Initially, the charcter's overall appearance looked humorous but later the seriousness of the character will shake you. The dialogues of Mahmoodji will make you laugh and will keep you hooked till the end as if you are reading a 1000 pages mystery novel. Other main actors, senior veteran actor Manoj Kumarji and senior actress Nandaji did a commendable work and it will leave you impressed. The facial expressions are intimidating and the suspense around their character's spooky stories.

Songs: The songs are sung by Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkarji. Gumnaam hai Koi song is one of the chartbuster hit songs which can be remembered for many years. The music director is Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal, Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi and lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri.

Synopsis: A group of young people is asked to spend the weekend on a desolate island, but when they get there, neither the host nor the owner of the island is there, and the next morning, one of the party members is discovered dead.

Trivia: A 1943 Douglas C-47A-85-DL constructed for the US Airforce served as the aircraft used in the film. Construction #20012, Serial #43-15546. It had a lengthy international career before Kasturi and Sons, India (VT-DTS) brought it to deliver The Indu newspaper to remote locations. It was relocated to Nadargul Airstrip and put out of service; Flytech Aviation Academy now utilises it for ground training (2018).

This movie is unmissable. Do watch it.
