Hrishikesh Mukherjee produced this film for his technicians. They all produced the film and had a share in it. Mukherjee was the only director in the industry who did this for his technical team.
This film may have been inspired by the Bengali film "Mohunbaganer Meye" (1976). Utpal Dutt played the elderly father of the hero in both the films. In "Mohunbaganer Meye", his character insisted that his son marry a girl who was a fan of the Mohun Bagan football team. In this film, his character insisted on his son marrying a traditional girl who does not speak English.
Prakash Mehra was going to release the film in the Delhi/UP territory. But he backed out at the last minute . The delay caused the films technician's (who produced the film) to not get their 5 lakhs right away. Sound recordist George D'Cruz's family were waiting and depending on their share invested in the film. This was due to D'Cruz's sudden death and pending debts they needed to pay.
The producers of this film, Jayant Pathare and Ashok Rawat, were long-time associates of director Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Jayant Pathare's association with Hrishikesh Mukherjee went back to almost the beginning of their Hindi film careers. He was the cinematographer of many of the director's films including "Anari" (1959), "Anand" (1971) and "Abhimaan" (1973). Ashok Rawat had been Hrishikesh Mukherjee's assistant director in many films including "Alaap" (1977), "Gol Maal" (1979) and "Jurmaana" (1979).
