Excellent, sophisticated satire of German society and military.

Set in the depression, this film ridicules the German military's propensity to follow orders unthinkingly, and shows the plight of people such as the unemployed, stateless and ex-convicts. Hitler had all copies that could be found destroyed. A beautiful, poignant, yet very funny movie.
