They are called coelacanths, a primitive order of fish once thought to be extinct. The first live specimen was caught off the coast of South Africa in 1938, 24 years after the events depicted in the movie. However, it is entirely feasible that Whitmore, a collector of rare artifacts, could have gotten a hold of a few specimens before anyone else.
