Merit Street Media laid off almost third of its employees on Friday, sources tell Deadline. The move comes four months after the launch of Dr. Phil McGraw’s news and entertainment TV network with Christian-based Trinity Broadcasting cable network as a main distribution partner, putting the new brand in more than 65 million homes on DirecTV and Dish among other able and satellite systems.
Almost 40 employees were impacted by the cuts, sources said, bringing the company’s headcount to about 100 for a close to 30% reduction. As recent hires, the laid-off workers did not qualify for severance and did not receive any, I hear.
“Following the brief summer hiatus of Dr. Phil Primetime, Merit Street implemented ongoing consolidations of departments and roles in efforts to achieve efficiencies at the highest level, which unfortunately resulted in some layoffs,” a Merit Street spokesperson said. “We are confidently getting better at what we do. In key appointments at Constantin Film, one of Europe’s biggest – and most ambitious – of production powerhouses, Viola Jäger and Jan Ehlert has been named as its new Chief Content Officers.
Jan Ehlert will head up TV/streaming, Viola Jäger oversee content for theatrical/film; both report to Constantin Film CEO Oliver Berben.
For years, Constantin has built its business on big international hits, such as the “Resident Evil” franchise, and a rock-solid domestic business powered by national blockbusters, such as, most recently, “Chantal and the Magic Kingdom,” which has sold over 2.6 million admissions in Germany.
Coming just a couple of months after Berben took over formally from Martin Moszkowicz as Constantin Film CEO, the new appointments are a play for continuity. Ehlert joined Moovie in 2000, just a year after Constantin head Berndt Eichinger had bought the Berben-headed company. Focusing on TV in his now 24-year career at Constantin Film,...

Oliver Berben didn’t just have idle dreams as a youngster about becoming an astronaut one day. He was actually working on a career in space by studying aerospace and space technology at a Berlin university well into his 20s.
But after stumbling into the movie industry through a part-time student job as a driver and runner, Berben realized that he had found his calling on the ground – so he gave up on the galaxies. And now, after a quarter century as a personable down-to-earth producer and executive at Constantin Film, Berben is about to take the controls of one of Germany’s biggest and most powerful production-distribution companies as its chief executive.
“I never would have thought that I’d have the chance to work for this company let alone get into a position to lead it,” Berben says. “It still feels a little surreal.”

Exclusive: Nancy Grace is set to front In the Valley of Sin, a true-crime docuseries for Fox Nation that looks at a wild story from small-town Washington a quarter-century ago, Deadline has learned. The first part will bow Sunday, May 9, and the remaining five episodes will premiere daily through May 14. Watch the trailer above.
Fox confirmed the new project, which will explore the harrowing claims of child abuse in the sleepy town of Wenatchee, Wa. The 64-year-old businessman was found dead in his home in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 8, with a gunshot to his face. His body was in a chair and an autopsy showed that he’d been killed 24 to 48 hours earlier. Before he died, he exchanged aggressive text messages and argued with 33-year-old Jennifer Lynn Morrissey, an exotic dancer and motorcycle mechanic and the woman now charged with his slaying.
But why they fought and how McNew was killed remain the subject of debate, as does the true history...
