Peggy, Mike and Laura are staying with their Aunt and Uncle - Harriet and Henry - while their eccentric father, Thaddeus (accompanied by photo journalist Charlotte Clancy) sails around the world. In the aftermath of an unexpected storm Thaddeus and Charlotte are presumed drowned. Uncle Henry and Aunt Harriet see this as a perfect opportunity for inheriting Thaddeus' estate. Frustrated by their devious plans, Henry and Harriet take it out on the children in their care - causing them to run away from their wicked Aunt and Uncle. Taking shelter on a deserted island the children encounter Jack, who is eventually revealed to be an orphan who has also run away from home. Back at the farmhouse Henry and Harriet discover that the children have run away. They set off to look for them but to no avail. They decide not to tell anyone that they have gone missing in case it draws attention to their plans to sell the children's house. While the children on their island - unknown them, their father Thaddeus and Charlotte are shipwrecked on an island themselves - and mutually blaming each other for their plight - but don't opposites attract? Still on the island the children decide to take shelter in a secret hideout. Jack tells the others a story of how a mad monk used to live on the island. after some peculiar happenings which constantly surround the children they think that the island is haunted. Foggo, the chairman of the explorers club calls PC Cooper who tries to find the children... The children eventually discover the identity of the ghost to be a kind old monk who has taken refuge - and is intent on pursuing his environmental dream - specifically to save an owl sanctuary which has come under threat from the local authorities. Meanwhile Aunt Harriet and Uncle Henry try somehow to prevent the authorities from closing in, having been alerted to their insidious plan by Lord Foggo, chairman of the explorers club and mentor of Thaddeus. As the story evolves events take on unexpected twists; Thaddeus and Charlotte are saved after having been discovered on a desert island. Uncle Henry and Aunt Harriet are found out and arrested by the local police, and the monk is successful in fulfilling his environmental dream. The children are discovered by the police and much to their joy are reunited with their father upon his return home from being rescued.

Romance is in the air - much to the children's concern - when Thaddeus and Charlotte go off on a book promotional tour together, leaving Peggy, Mike, Laura and Jack in the capable hands of their wacky new nanny - Ruby. The children discover that nearby to their house a boy is being held prisoner and his identity is eventually revealed to be the kidnapped Prince of Baronia. The Prince has been kidnapped by the King's brother who plans to hold the boy ransom and usurp the throne himself... While the children attempt to rescue the young prince, Charlotte discovers that Thaddeus has been kidnapped from their hotel on the book tour, and she sets out to solve the mystery. Charlotte discovers that Thaddeus has been captured by the King of Baronia. She successfully tricks the guards and rescues him. The King believed Thaddeus was involved with the kidnapping of his son. As the story evolves the children, against all odds, successfully outwit the kidnappers and deliver the Prince back to the King of Baronia - and are unexpectedly reunited with Charlotte and Thaddeus. As a thank you for their efforts, the King invites the children and adults on holiday to Baronia with their new friend, the Prince.

Charlotte accompanies Thaddeus on a lecture tour - where Thaddeus is revealing exciting details of a recent natural world discovery which has been made into a rare species - the Malucu Devil Spider. The entire event is suddenly disrupted by the unexpected intrusion of sinister men - eventually revealed to be led by the enigmatic Block, who for some unknown reason has stolen the spider and transported it to a mysterious destination. Meanwhile, staying in the Killimoon mountains on holiday - in the heart of Baronia - is a wonderful experience for the children. However, unknown to them, deep in the magical forest lives Clovis Monk, a deranged recluse and genius scientist who has aspirations to dominate the world. Charlotte is kidnapped by Block and taken to Baronia. Whilst Thaddeus is rescuing her he is bitten by a spider. Meanwhile, back at Killimoon Lodge, Laura is captured by some guards. The other children try to rescue her but get caught on camera and are trapped by one of Clovis Monk's traps. The children manage to escape and rescue Laura. They discover that Barney, the Princess bodyguard, is working for Clovis Monk. Charlotte discovers that Clovis is planning to make a world of living dead and that she is the first victim (Monk is her enemy after she exposed him in a newspaper investigation years before). After Charlotte is captured by Block and held prisoner in the center of the mountain range, the children discover that the maniacal and evil Clovis Monk plans to preserve Charlotte alive in embalming fluid. Thaddeus, who has set off in search of Charlotte, is reunited with the children and together they are captured... In a thrilling climax to the adventure, Thaddeus and the children escape and outwit Clovis, Block and their gang. Charlotte is rescued - and Thaddeus is given the antidote to save him from the spider bite. Good has won the day and Clovis Monk's plans are foiled.

Thaddeus reveals that his application to adopt Jack has been successful. The family take a short break in an Irish castle run by the eccentric Ma Moon and her mysterious son Fin Bar to celebrate. Charlotte proposes to Thaddeus - but the next day he has disappeared... Charlotte goes off in search of Thaddeus. Ruby finds herself a reluctant participant in Ma Moon and Fin Bar's quest; the search for eternal youth! The children notice that she has suddenly become full of energy, which they do not know is due to her being secretly given a potion by Ma Moon and Fin Bar.... The children encounter a ghostly figure on horse back and all are convinced that the castle is haunted. The children decide that someone is trying to scare them off. Charlotte finds Thaddeus - much to his annoyance. Jack and Laura find a secret passage which leads to the tower. They discover the laboratory where Ma Moon and Fin Bar have been conducting their tests. They soon discover that for all the hospitality, they are actually part of a dangerous experiment. All the ghostly events are designed to throw them off the scent. Interwoven with things that go bump in the night, a portrait which comes alive and the mischievous disappearance of the family's belongings, Thaddeus, Charlotte and the children finally foil the bizarre plans of Ma Moon and Fin Bar. In the midst of the celebrations (and much to their delight) Peggy, Mike, Laura and Jack discover that Thaddeus and Charlotte are to be married after all...
