It looks like bystanders in Croatia are stealing from the rich (the filmmakers) and giving to the poor (us) by sneaking set pics from the new, gritty Robin Hood movie starring Taron Egerton (Kingsman) and Jamie Foxx (Bait). Let's take a look: Well, it certainly looks explode-y and action-packed, so that's a good sign. However, we Still don't see Egerton in tights,... Read More...

Ep 102 – Bait: "Special Agent Fisher is tracking Ash. Pablo gets his first taste of blood in a manic battle, and a revelation changes Kelly’s life forever."
"The 10-episode first season of the half-hour series is executive produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, Bruce Campbell, the original filmmakers, and Craig Digregorio who serves as executive producer and showrunner. “Ash vs Evil Dead,” is the long-awaited follow-up to the classic horror film The Evil Dead.

In The Theory of Everything, Eddie Redmayne plays Stephen Hawking, the brilliant British cosmologist stricken with Lou Gehrig’s disease, the motor-neurone disease that robbed him of his ability to speak on his own. The film follows Hawking from his academic days at Cambridge, where he met his first wife, Jane (Felicity Jones), through his history-making research that became increasing arduous as he became a prisoner of his own body. Since the film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September, Redmayne—best known for the role of the dashing Marius in Les Miserables—has rightfully been one of the...

Rebellion | Promised Land | Evil Dead | Olympus Has Fallen | Love Is All You Need | Me And You | F*ck For Forest | Bait | The Words
Rebellion (15)
(Mathieu Kassovitz, 2011, Fra) Mathieu Kassovitz, Iabe Lapacas, Malik Zidi. 135 mins
Working with a real-life 1980s incident in New Caledonia (not dissimilar to a French Falklands), Kassovitz crafts a thoughtful thriller with no heroes, only good intentions compromised by colonialist mistrust and distant politics. His negotiator is set between a hair-triggered French military and separatist rebels, but with an election back home, not everyone wants a peaceful outcome.
Promised Land (15)
(Gus Van Sant, 2012, Us/UAE) Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Frances McDormand. 107 mins
With fracking as the central concern, this finds it hard to avoid being an "issue movie", but there's some human drama to it. Damon's gas agent comes to an archetypal small town with a buyout in mind, but the locals and their country ways get to him.

The White House is destroyed, the President is captured, and only one man can save him. That man is John Patterson. Hang on, that's not right …
I was on an Antoine Fuqua set once, The Replacement Killers, to meet Chow Yun-Fat, a delightful man. Even then, in the late 90s, back when it looked as if Hong Kong cinema might yet save the American action movie, I knew in my bones that Antoine Fuqua (whom I didn't meet) surely wasn't the man to import Chow Yun-Fat or the Hong Kong action aesthetic to Hollywood. Well, a lot I know. John Woo has been to Hollywood and done his thing and long since gone home, and Fuqua continues, against logic or reason or merit, to thrive. The man who gave us Bait, Shooter and King Arthur – mongrel dogs one and all – is often associated with the Oscar that Denzel Washington won for Training Day but,...

Olympus Has Fallen is a old-fashioned action movie that hearkens back to one of the grandest plot devices in the genre — the mission of saving the President of the United States. In this film, which riffs on the Die Hard setup better than A Good Day to Die Hard did, the White House is taken over by terrorists, Washington D.C. is a war zone, and the President is a hostage in his own bunker.
Playing the hero is Gerard Butler, an ex-secret service man who becomes the country’s last hope in saving the president’s (Aaron Eckhart) life, and also preventing nuclear devastation. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film also stars Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo, Dylan McDermott, Rick Yune, and Ashley Judd.
While he is still best known for directing Training Day in 2001, Fuqua previously helmed Brooklyn’s Finest (2009), Shooter (2007), King Arthur (2004), Bait (2000), The Replacement Killers (1998), and more.

Yesterday on twitter I ended up in a fun alternative Oscar argument with Joe, Julien, Will and Jacob and it was amusing because nobody agreed on anything...
Get your hands off ________'s rightful Oscar.
So let's expand that conversation to include Tfe readers. If you'll recall had you lived through it or know the year went like so...
Winner: Judi Dench, Shakespeare in Love (also won Nsfc & BAFTA)
I'm actually fine with this win (from the nominee pool, I mean) though I'm aware many internet dwellers are very anti-Shakespeare in Love
Nominees:
Kathy Bates, Primary Colors (Chicago, Bfca & SAG winner) Brenda Blethyn, Little Voice Rachel Griffiths, Hilary & Jackie Lynn Redgrave, Gods and Monsters (Spirit & Globe winner)
So that supporting shortlist was essentially one extended cameo (Judi), three normal size supporting roles (Kathy, Brenda, Lynn) and one co-lead title character (Rachel). My feeling is that it's a dull list even...

Two months ago, Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky bailed from what would have been his first foray into big budget action filmmaking. Reteaming with his Fountain star Hugh Jackman, Aronofsky was on board to deliver a gritty version of The Wolverine, the not-quite-prequel-sequel to 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Since then, the movie's been in flux, suffering the loss of the talented director and a hiccup in production due to the tsunami disaster affecting their desired shooting location of Japan. For all intents and purposes, the movie was not moving forward.
Now, thanks to Variety, we have the first news since the shake up, a short list of contenders for the director's seat. Missing are previous names like Robert Schwentke, David Slade and Duncan Jones, replaced by a few "in" directors, a few indie talents and guys who've been doing the action thing for most of their careers. A healthy mix to be sure.

Give ‘Em Hell Malone, Sean Connery holding umbrellas in Highlander, remaking Teen Wolf, fainting zombies and 3-D sharks in a supermarket. It's Mr Russell Mulcahy...
We had the pleasure of talking to Australian born director Russell Mulcahy, best known to most of us as the director of Highlander, The Shadow and, more recently, Resident Evil: Extinction. (I've also just managed to get hold of a copy of his film Ricochet, which I remember being a solid and underrated 90s action-thriller, starring Denzel Washington and John Lithgow, but more on that soon.)
The interview was to promote his latest film, Give ‘em Hell Malone (released on DVD today), which stars the ever dependable Thomas Jane as an old school private eye, living in a bizarre setting of the past and present. But we were fortunate to have time to discuss his career at length too and get some great stories in the process.

Antoine Fuqua is interesting proof that, with the right combination of ingredients, a director can really surprise you. Most of his catalog isn't particularly impressive (Bait, King Arthur, Shooter) but then there's Training Day. While we wait to see if Fuqua and his Training Day star Ethan Hawke can do a little alchemy again in Brooklyn's Finest (have to say, doesn't look like it) the director is lining up other work. He's just signed on to direct an adaptation of the Vince Flynn novel Consent to Kill, about CIA assassin Mitch Rapp. Variety has the details on the picture, which Lorenzo di Bonaventura (GI Joe, Transformers) is producing for my new favorite studio, CBS Entertainment (Extraordinary Measures, The Back-up Plan, Faster). We don't have a lot of details yet, and no significant cast announcements, but here's the recap of Vince Flynn's 2005 novel: CIA assassin Mitch Rapp battles a Saudi billionaire...

Come the month of May, all the major network shows go on hiatus (or are cancelled), so summer can often be a dull period for TV. There's been a few surprise network hits born during the summertime blues (.The O.C.), but Americans often find themselves turning to cable. Two years ago, the USA network debuted a fresh new show, with a virtually unknown leading man, as well as some familiar faces. 'Burn Notice' is the story of former spy Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan), who when we first meet him, has just got word from his handler that he's been "burned". He's blacklisted, damaged goods and unreliable. A "burn notice" has been issued and he's no longer considered an asset to the intelligence community. The thing is, Michael is in the middle of a covert sting operation in Nigeria when he hears this and his intended targets are...
