Prior December 1991, this Mexican soap opera was one of the first "western" shows to be televised in National Russian TV with great success. The success was so big, that BBC made a documentary (which can be found in Youtube). There was even an unconfirmed rumor that Veronica Castro and Rogelio Guerra were almost invited to Russian presidential elections.
According to many people who worked in Televisa, this program was a "before and after" for Mexican soap operas. The worldwide success of "Los ricos tambien lloran" open many markets to Mexican production companies, and Mexican soap operas started to gain worldwide recognition, at the level of a Hollywood production. Prior to this, Mexican programs were only famous in Spanish speaking countries.
One of the things Veronica Castro remembered very well about her visit to Russia is how Russians changed the pronunciation of her name from {Verónika} to {Veroníka}.
