In a stormy day, the television technician João William (Luís Alberto Pereira) is struck by a lighting why fixing the equipment for broadcasting the game between Brazil and Argentina in the Soccer World Cup. He dies for a brief moment but is assigned by God to return to Earth and spread peace and truth to the world. While walking in the parking lot, a woman kisses him and mysteriously his image is transmitted to every television in São Paulo and his wife leaves home with their daughter. Sooner he discovers that he lost his privacy and every movement he makes is broadcast to every TV channel, affecting the lives of the viewers and advertising agencies.
"O Efeito Ilha" is a weird movie that criticizes the effect of television in the brains of the viewers. In 1994, the shameful Big Brother did not exist but this film foresees the lack of privacy of this show with a camera broadcasting the life of the lead character. There is also a strong critic in the effect of the Soccer World Cup in the Brazilians; the damaging effect of the brain wash of the advertising agencies; how faith is destroyed in a material world, like a machine gun of harsh criticism. There is also a politically incorrect moment with the comment of a character about the use of condom to prevent AIDS. Last but not the least, the annoying accent of São Paulo is irritating. This film has been released in Brazil only on VHS by Betta Entertainment. My vote is six.
