A scientist named Audric, accidentally creates evil mutant plant creatures called The Monster Minds. He gives his son Jayce, a special plant called The Magic Root, but The Magic Root splits in half, Jayce possesses one half and Audric the other and Audric goes missing. Jayce, his adopted sister Flora, the loyal robot Oon and the wizard Gillian, soon joined by the space pirate Herc Stormsailor, form as a team of fighter called The Lightning League. With their vehicles, Jayce and The Wheeled Warriors goes in search of Audric, and to put the two pieces of The Magic Root together and destroy The Monster Minds and their evil leader Sawboss, whom is bent on dominating the galaxy.
To begin with - Star Wars (1977) and Mad Max (1979) are strong influences behind the cartoon. Herc Stormsailor is based after Han Solo. The Monster Minds vehicles are like the vehicles in the Mad Max sequels. It's likely Jason and the Argonauts (1963) may also have been an influence, especially with the main character named Jayce (Short for Jason) and Jayce leading his Lightning League in search for the other half of the Magic Root. Jason and the Argonauts was the Greek Mythology story of Jason and his assembled crew of men, as they set off on a quest for The Golden Fleece.
When the series failed, it was decided, that there would not be a 2nd season and was cancelled and taken off our screens for good.
Yes. Mattel, the toy company behind the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe toy franchise, created a toy line called The Wheeled Warriors, like He-Man, it had no backstory. The cartoon was created for a structured story and distinct characters. The Wheeled Warriors toy line did not do very well and was canceled before the cartoon came out.
The cartoon would had ended with Jayce reuniting with Audric and putting the two pieces of The Magic Root together and destroying The Monster Minds once and for all.
A revival of the cartoon has not been considered or planned, so far. But a possible return of the cartoon to our screens, for a new generation, cannot be ruled out and it is likely, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors may come back in future.
