The makers were toying with the idea of casting real life father and son Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan in principal roles.

The plot was powerful. Yet the movie was a flop - mainly due to miscasting and lack of chemistry. While Amitabh who was 57 at the time, excelled in the role of the disciplinarian father, he looked jaded in the role of the young twenty-something son. His chemistry with the super-beautiful Soundarya was weak. Newcomer Rachna as his childhood sweetheart just did not jell. The role of his mother, the senior Amitabh's wife was played by the 40 year old Jayasudha, making the mother-son dynamics very unconvincing as well. Had the makers cast a senior leading lady like Raakhee or Waheeda opposite the older Amitabh and given the son's role to a younger actor like Abhishek, the movie would have been a hit. If Amitabh's dual role was a must, at a very minimum, he should have been shown as a man in his 30s instead of a contemporary of a college-going Rachna.
Shefali Shah was offered a role opposite Amitabh but declined.
