The upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked” is taking a unique approach by having the lead actors perform their songs live on camera rather than lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks. Director Jon M. Chu revealed this creative decision in a recent behind-the-scenes video promoting the film. Having the performers sing live makes for a more connected experience both technically and artistically.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who play Elphaba and Glinda respectively, will sing their vocals in real-time as the scenes are filmed. This presents a significant challenge but sets the production apart from most other movie musicals that typically rely on studio recordings. Chu explained that both stars are talented singers, so the team decided live performances were the best option for every scene. The video showed glimpses of Grande warming up her voice and Erivo singing while suspended from wires, demonstrating the technical aspects of the live capture.

Universal Pictures has revealed a new featurette for the highly anticipated Wicked film, which shows how the singing was recorded live on the set. For movies, the singing is usually recorded away from the set in a more controlled environment.
In the video, director Jon M. Chu says, “They are the best singers in the world, and so in every scene, they have been singing live.” Cynthia Erivo added: “We chose to sing live because it meant that we would be further connected to the words we were saying and to each other.” Ariana Grande said: “It was an immediate no-brainer for Cynthia and I. We both were like, well, of course, we’re singing live.”

We just got confirmation of what we long suspected: the upcoming movie version of “Wicked” will close with “Defying Gravity,” which ended the first act on Broadway. We learned this from the listing of tracks on the soundtrack, which is available for pre-order. It is due to drop on the day that the movie is released: Nov. 22.
Expect Cynthia Erivo to leave audiences wanting more when she sings this show-stopper as her character, Elphaba, transforms into the Wicked Witch. But they’ll have to wait a full year to see the second half of the story with “Wicked Part Two,” set for release on Nov. 26, 2025. Jon M. Chu (“Crazy Rich Asians”) directed both movies while Winnie Holzman, who reaped a Tony bid for the Broadway book, wrote the screenplay with Dana Fox (“Cruella”).

Disney’s long-expected move to fold ABC Signature into 20th Television brings to an end the media conglom’s in-house TV studio, which started off as Touchstone Television a decade before Disney bought ABC, subsequently being renamed ABC Studios and more recently ABC Signature.
Launched in 1985, Touchstone TV’s first major hit was Golden Girls, which ran on NBC for seven seasons. Other successful series from that era include Blossom, also for NBC, and Home Improvement, Ellen and Boy Meets World for ABC.
In the first years after ABC became part of Disney, Touchstone Television continued to sell to all networks — which is how 20th Television operated for its entire run at Fox — with shows such as Felicity and Popular for the WB and The PJs for Fox/WB.
The studio gradually shifted its attention to its own network, supplying it with series such as Once And Again, My Wife And Kids,...

“Wicked,” Universal’s film adaptation of the hit Broadway show, is landing in theaters on Nov. 22 — five days ahead of schedule.
It was originally supposed to open on Nov. 27, the same day as Disney’s “Moana 2.” On its new release date, “Wicked” is smartly avoiding a box office battle royale against another movie musical that appeals to a similarly female demographic. Now, “Wicked” will get a jump on the Thanksgiving holiday, but it won’t be completely devoid of competition. The film is set to debut on the same day as Paramount and Ridley Scott’s historical epic “Gladiator II,” though there’s presumably much less overlap in the audience and thus, a threat of cannibalization.
This is the second major date shift for “Wicked: Part One,” which was initially on the calendar for Dec. 25. But Universal moved the film to Thanksgiving to dodge Christmas releases like Disney’s...

“Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo traveled to Las Vegas for CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners.
Dressed in their character’s signature pink and green aesthetic, the Grammy-nominated artists graced the stage at Caesars Palace to hype up “Wicked,” the big-budget movie musical that’s due in theaters around Thanksgiving.
“We both felt such a tremendous responsibility to honor these women and to pour our hearts, our souls, our tears — so many different pairs of lashes,” said Grande, who requested to hold hands with her co-star on stage. Erivo added, “I’m really grateful for this journey that we’ve taken together.”
Though they didn’t sing (to the disappointment of many in the room), they introduced an extended featurette. Scored to “Popular” and “Defying Gravity,” the dazzling footage showcased the sweeping, brightly lit world and includes scenes of Elphaba roaming the halls of Shiz University...

Produced by the Weeknd, Mike Dean, and Metro Boomin, “Popular” finds Tesfaye ruminating on the allure and pitfalls of fame and fortune. “Kill anyone to be popular, sell her soul to be popular,” he sings on the chorus, while Carti boasts, “Shawty fuck with me ‘cause she know I’m popular,” throughout.
Though it may have made more sense for Madonna to jump on one of the Weeknd’s sleek, ’80s-inspired synth-pop songs, the singer slips comfortably into the track’s midtempo R&b milieu. And who...

We've previously written extensively about the ways the voiceover industry is already preparing for the potential future of the industry as A.I. gets smarter and faster, but according to an exclusive report from Deadline, things are about to get even more complicated.

Disney’s former head of communications Zenia Mucha is advising TikTok as the beleagued company fights calls to shut it down in the U.S. on security concerns, Deadline has confirmed. It’s already banned across the Federal government with President Biden recently ramping up demands that the global app’s Chinese parent sell the U.S. business to a company Stateside, or see it vanish.
Mucha’s advisory role to the besieged social media platform falls under her Zm Stategies banner. Having moved back East after officially leaving Disney in late 2021, the former righthand lady to past and present CEO Bob Iger formed the company in August last year.
No stranger to the sharp elbows of the political world, Mucha was a hardball advocate for GOP New York Senator Alfonse D’Amato and later Governor George Pataki before joining Iger and the House of Mouse in 2001. Whether those partisan skills...

Prepare for an earlier return to Oz.
“Wicked,” Universal’s big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, is landing in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024 — a month ahead of schedule. The movie was initially scheduled to open on Dec. 25, but the studio felt it would be better positioned around Thanksgiving compared to Christmas.
Though the release calendar will change over the next two years, there’s currently only a Disney Animation placeholder on the docket during Thanksgiving of 2024. By comparison, Christmastime is stacked with “Avatar 3” (a sequel to the third-highest grossing movie in history), as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.”
Jon M. Chu is directing “Wicked,” which has been split into two parts. For now, the second installment is set to release a year later on Dec. 25, 2025. (There aren’t any “Avatar” sequels planned for 2025… at the moment.)

Paramount wants consumers to know that it’s popular. Really popular.
The company, led by CEO Bob Bakish, on Wednesday is rolling out a new corporate branding campaign with the tagline “Popular is Paramount.” The campaign is meant to highlight some of the content produced by the media and entertainment giant.
“Anchored in research-backed insights, the campaign vibrantly captures the essence of ‘Popular’ with eye-catching declarations of content leadership in all genres and formats,” the company said in a description of the campaign. It also uses the Paramount stars (which normally circle the mountain at the center of the company’s logo) to create a sort of halo around key characters.
Among the content featured in the campaign is Paramount Network smash Yellowstone (“Popular is the most watched show on TV,” the tagline says, in front a cowboy hat-clad Kevin Costner); as well as Top Gun: Maverick (“Popular is the...

It took years of hustle and hard work in high heels before RuPaul hit it big in TV. But while he was on the road to becoming a household name and multiple Emmy winner, the host and executive producer of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” never doubted that he was destined for small-screen success.
“Everything I know I learned from television,” RuPaul says. “I grew up watching television. I was groomed for it before I ever stepped in front of a camera. The first time I did, I knew exactly what to do.”
RuPaul recalls being obsessed with TV as a kid growing up in San Diego and the Atlanta area, frequently watching “Perry Mason” and “Murder, She Wrote” with his mother. He never missed “The Carol Burnett Show” and variety series hosted by Sonny & Cher. “Good Times” and “Sanford & Son” were also favorites. He watches reruns of “Golden Girls” regularly to this day.

From the fiercely protective house mother Blanca (Mj Rodriguez), her spirited child Angel (Indya Moore), and her dripping-with-elegance rival Elektra (Dominique Jackson), the women at the center of “Pose” were able to live and breathe on their own terms, free from any preconceived notions or box-checking of what a trans-femme character should look like. Much of that had to do with the writers, directors, producers, and general talent assembled by “Pose” executive producer — and reigning king of queer Hollywood — Ryan Murphy.
“From the very first conversation I had with Ryan…the first difficult conversation we had was about — ‘Why you? Why are you choosing to do the show?...
