Disney’s long-expected move to fold ABC Signature into 20th Television brings to an end the media conglom’s in-house TV studio, which started off as Touchstone Television a decade before Disney bought ABC, subsequently being renamed ABC Studios and more recently ABC Signature.

Launched in 1985, Touchstone TV’s first major hit was Golden Girls, which ran on NBC for seven seasons. Other successful series from that era include Blossom, also for NBC, and Home Improvement, Ellen and Boy Meets World for ABC.

In the first years after ABC became part of Disney, Touchstone Television continued to sell to all networks — which is how 20th Television operated for its entire run at Fox — with shows such as Felicity and Popular for the WB and The PJs for Fox/WB.

The studio gradually shifted its attention to its own network, supplying it with series such as Once And Again, My Wife And Kids,...

Series creator, executive producer and showrunner David Schulner is developing a spinoff series at NBC set 30 years after the events of the original series. Tentatively titled New Amsterdam: Tomorrow, it follows Dr. Max Goodwin’s (Ryan Eggold) daughter, Luna Goodwin, who steps into her father’s role as Medical Director of New Amsterdam Hospital.

The potential sequel, which is expected to explore the ways artificial intelligence would help advance the medical industry in the future, was set up in the New Amsterdam series finale. It introduced a young and enthusiastic new medical director, played by Molly Griggs, at the beginning of the episode who was revealed at the end to be Max’s daughter, Luna Goodwin, as an adult in flash-forwards.

Mischa Barton will appear in the new season of “Neighbours” coming to Amazon Freevee.

Barton will guest star in the upcoming season of the long-running Australian soap opera, which was picked up by Freevee back in November. According to her official character description, Barton will play Reece, “an American new to Erinsborough who’s not quite who she appears to be.”

The American Society of Cinematographers has revealed the honorees for the 37th ASC Awards: Stephen Goldblatt will receive Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Darius Khondji the International Award, Charlie Lieberman the President’s Award, Fred Murphy the Career Achievement in Television honor and Sam Nicholson will get the Curtis Clark Technical Achievement Award.

Born in South Africa, British cinematographer Goldblatt was twice nominated for an Oscar, for Batman Forever (1995) and The Prince of Tides (1991), and is known for a body of work that includes the first two Lethal Weapon movies for Richard Donner and two Batman movies (Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever and Batman & Robin). The 79th Venice Film Festival officially kicked off the fall Oscar race on Thursday afternoon with Todd Field’s “Tár,” a drama starring Cate Blanchett as a famous composer embroiled in a public scandal. Exclusive: Egot winner Rita Moreno has been cast in a starring role in the feature film The Prank, to be directed by Maureen Bharoocha (Golden Arm), opposite Connor Kalopsis and Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever). Filming begins this month in and around Los Angeles.

The Prank follows two high school students who play a prank on their physics teacher, Mrs. Wheeler, played by Moreno. When she fails them on a test; they teach the imperious, demanding, insulting instructor a lesson by falsely accusing her of the murder of a missing student.

Other cast in The Prank includes Keith David, Meredith Salenger, Jonathan Kimmel, Nathan Janak and Kate Flannery.

The dark comedy is written by Rebecca Flinn-White & Zak White. Bharoocha was recently named IndieWire’s Rising Female Directors of 2020, was on HBO’s 2018 Director’s List, and was nominated for the SXSW 2020 Adam Yauch Hörnblowér Visionary Directing Award.

It’s double or nothing for “The Crown” in Best Drama Actress. With Emmy nominations for Emma Corrin and Olivia Colman on Tuesday, “The Crown” became just the fourth show this century to earn double nominations in the category.

Corrin and Colman, who were 1-2 in the odds, are nominated alongside Uzo Aduba (“In Treatment”), Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Mj Rodriguez (“Pose”) and Jurnee Smollett (“Lovecraft Country”).

Steven Weber is continuing his mission to be on every show ever. The ubiquitous actor is headed to Chicago Med in a recurring role in the NBC drama’s sixth season, TVLine has learned.

Weber — who most recently starred in Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why and NBC’s Indebted — will play Dr. Dean Archer, a wry, blunt and talented physician who makes the move from a rural hospital to Gaffney Chicago Medical Center’s Emergency Department, where he already knows one of the docs. Winner of Andalusia Cinema Awards for best new director and new actress (Silvia Acosta), Guillermo Rojas’ debut feature “Once Again” (“Una vez más”) has been acquired for international by Javier’s Krause Kaf Films.

The news comes just before “Once Again” bows in the Market Premieres section of Spain’s Malaga Festival Spanish Screenings, which run Nov. 17-20.

Rojas’ directorial feature debut, which he also wrote, “Once Again” weighs in as one of the more substantial features in the section, clocking in at 112 minutes.

Influenced by Ted Demme’s “Beautiful Girls,” Rojas has recognized in interview, “Once Again” turns on about 30 year old Abril (Acosta) who leaves London to return to her native Seville, for her grandmother’s funeral. There she re-meets Daniel (Jacinto Bobo), the love of her youth until she left him five years earlier to take up a job offer in London with Norman Foster.

Not so many years ago, Emmy winners of Best Drama or Drama Actress used to prevail because they submitted an especially powerful sample episode of their TV series to a small jury comprised of 50 to 100 peers, who could only judge four categories at most. The strongest roles almost always won – like Sela Ward and Patricia Arquette — even if they’d been discounted by clueless award prognosticators.

But radical new voting changes have been enacted in recent years, permitting all 2,000+ members of the TV academy’s acting branch to cast ballots in all acting races. Sure, voters are still required to check off a box on their ballot attesting that they’ve viewed all episodes of all nominees, but that’s crazy to assume that all voters really did so.

So now seasoned Emmy-watchers wonder: How much do the sample episodes matter any more? Do they truly impact voters?

Heading into the ceremony many awards pundits thought HBO’s “The Sopranos” would prevail after being bested the previous year by ABC’s “The Practice.” However, it was yet another victory for broadcast networks as NBC’s political drama triumphed for what would be a record-tying run of four consecutive wins. David Schulner is doubling down with Universal Television.

The “New Amsterdam” creator and showrunner David Schulner has inked a four-year overall deal with the studio, extending a relationship which dates back to 2010. Under the deal, Schulner will develop, write and executive produce programming across multiple platforms including network, cable and streaming.

Schulner will continue to exec produce and showrun the NBC medical drama, and the news comes less than a month after “New Amsterdam” received a hefty three-season renewal from the network. Season 2 of “New Amsterdam” is currently averaging a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 9.8 million viewers in the Nielsen Live+7 ratings. In terms of viewership, the series is averaging a lift of 4.6 million viewers per episode in Live+7.

Schulner’s deal follows less than a week in the heels of another substantial agreement between Utv and Julie Plec, which sources say is valued in the mid-eight figure range north...

“New Amsterdam” showrunner David Schulner has signed a four-year overall deal with Universal TV.

Schulner will develop, write and executive produce programming for network, cable and streaming platforms. This new deal extends the relationship Schulner has had with Utv since 2010. He will remain as showrunner for NBC’s “New Amsterdam,” which was recently renewed for three more seasons.

“David is a versatile writer and showrunner who has proven himself adept in multiple genres,” Universal TV President Pearlena Igbokwe said. His very clear vision and leadership has been critical to the breakout success of ‘New Amsterdam’ around the world. I’m grateful that we get to continue this decade-long relationship.”

“New Amsterdam” is averaging a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 9.8 million viewers overall per Nielsen’s Live-plus-seven-day metric. Schulner started his television career on Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz’s “Once and Again.

On the heels of New Amsterdam landing a massive three-season renewal by NBC, the studio behind the medical drama, Universal Television, has signed creator/executive producer David Schulner into a big new four-year deal.

Under the pact, believed to be in the eight-figure range, Schulner will continue as executive producer/showrunner on New Amsterdam, now in its second season on NBC. He also will develop, write and executive produce programming targeting network, cable and streaming platforms for Universal Television, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios.

Schulner has been under a string of overall deals with Universal TV since 2010.

ABC Studios has signed ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ showrunner Liz Tigelaar to a two-year overall pod deal, with Tigelaar’s new company Best Day Ever adding Netflix exec Stacey Silverman as her producing partner.

Tigelaar, a writer-producer who also exec produces “Little Fires Everywhere,” previously served as showrunner and executive producer of “Casual,” the Hulu comedy created by Zander Lehmann and executive produced by Jason Reitman.

Writer/producer Liz Tigelaar (Little Fires Everywhere) has launched Best Day Ever, a new production company, which has entered a two-year overall pod deal with ABC Studios. Additionally, former Netflix executive Stacey Silverman will serve as Tigelaar’s producing partner at the new company.

Tigelaar is currently showrunner and executive producer of the upcoming limited series Little Fires Everywhere, produced by ABC Signature Studios. Starring and executive produced by Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington, the series is based on the bestselling novel by Celeste Ng, and debuts on Hulu on March 18.

One of the many additions to “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s” Emmy nomination tally was Marin Hinkle, who earned her career-first bid in the Best Comedy Supporting Actress category. The veteran performer, who rose to prominence with a recurring role on “Two and a Half Men,” won her first Screen Actors Guild Award prize earlier this year as part of the show’s ensemble. She plays Rose Weissman, a 1950s Manhattan housewife whose daughter (Rachel Brosnahan) is trying her hand at stand-up comedy, much to her chagrin.

For her Emmy submission, Hinkle has chosen the Season 2 opener “Simone.” In this installment, an unhappy Rose abandons her home and moves to Paris, causing her daughter, Midge, and husband, Abe (Tony Shalhoub), to go find her. But she’s excited by her new bohemian lifestyle, and Abe decides to stay behind with her for an extended stay.

Ed Zwick has signed on to direct the first episode and executive produce Away, Netflix’s upcoming drama series from playwright Andrew Hinderaker, Jason Katims and Matt Reeves.

Written by Hinderaker, the series, loosely inspired by Chris Jones’ Esquire article of the same name, hails from Katims’ True Jack Prods., Reeves’ 6th & Idaho and Universal TV where True Jack is based. It is described as an epic love story and a thrilling tale of survival set against humanity’s greatest endeavor – the first human mission to Mars.

Away centers on Emma Green, an American astronaut who must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind in order to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous, year-long mission. It is a series about hope, humanity and how ultimately, we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things.

As TV academy members pick Emmy winners this week and next, there’s a harsh change in the process. Now voters must really, really promise that they’ve viewed at least one episode of each nominee in a category before completing their ballot.

Last year voters had to make the same pledge, but it wasn’t extracted at the end of the academy’s cynical finger pointed fiercely between the voter’s eyes. On the 2017 ballot, a warning reminded voters that they promised to watch a sample of each nominee’s work in a category before crowning their champs. Voters even had to check off a box before proceeding, but once you cleared security at the door, you were allowed to enter the main ballot area and start pulling levers, wreaking havoc.
