In the Roy Minton original play of Scum, he had the Carlin character as a Glaswegian, someone who hales from Glasgow, Scotland. He cast Ray Winstone in both the TV and cinema versions for the way in which he walked.
This is the original version made for the BBC but banned by them and never screened until 15 years later. The BBC said that it was banned because "There was too much incident packed into too short a time and that they doubted the veracity." So they thought it was pure fiction, but they also said that it "looked too much like a documentary."
A lot of the extras who played inmates were from local youth clubs.
The (positive) press screening was held in London's Wardour Street in Soho after the producer and director had been recently told by the BBC that it was not to be aired on television.
