If anticipation could be measured, it’s safe to say HBO’s Game of Thrones would hold the record. Until the time when that becomes possible, the show will have to settle for a different record, that being setting the most people on fire for an entertainment production. Fans must be drooling at the mere sound of this as it implies Daenerys has let her pets loose and they’re just torching the s**t out of everything in sight. When something becomes as insanely popular as the comic book movie genre, it’s inevitable that a hell of a lot of extremely famous actors will lend their talents to it. And as with the binary split of the fanbases, typical thinking says you’re either Marvel or you’re DC. Crossing the divide would surely be a gross act of betrayal?

Surprisingly, though, there are actually a high number of stars who have appeared in both.

For some fans, they are committing the eighth deadly sin. Such is the rivalry between Marvel and DC that they argue actors should pick a side and stick with it, especially if their first role struck a bum note. Hence why Ben Affleck’s casting as Batman, after murdering Daredevil, initially resulted in a very hostile backlash from comic book movie aficionados.

Remember Red and Red 2? The Bruce Willis-starring films based on Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's comic book series Red? Of course you do. Well, now, the same property is being adapted for TV.

NBC is the network behind this idea, and they’ve got Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber - who wrote the 2010 film, and its sequel – at the helm. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian – who produced the films – are involved, too.

There’s no word yet on what the announcement of this TV series means for the rumours of a Red 3 film, but our best guess is that the TV show has taken its place, seeing as so much the behind-the-scenes talent has jumped ship to the telly realm. That’s...

An action movie like Red 2, which is based on characters from Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s comic book, isn’t exactly burdened with the restrictions of reality. Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) and his collection of Retired Extremely Dangerous operatives can blow up city blocks, surreptitiously hop-scotch across the globe, and ingeniously escape from the most dire of circumstances; and if some of their Houdini breakouts are borderline unbelievable, well… that’s part of the fun.

★★☆☆☆ We've certainly been heavily dosed with geriatric action thrillers in recent years, with Arnie taking on The Last Stand, Sylvester Stallone heading up The Expendables and Bruce Willis popping up in anything his agent prescribes. However, none can boast the hospital waiting room worth of talent of Red 2 (2013). Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins join Willis as contract killer OAPs codenamed REDs - Retired, Extremely Dangerous - who first moseyed onto our screens with the sleeper hit original in 2010. Willis reprises his role as former CIA officer Frank Moses, who's now settled into domesticity.

Alongside sweetheart Sarah (Mary Louise Parker), Frank is now more used to doing the weekly shop at Costco (the first of many shameless product placements) than pistol-whipping hired goons. He's lured out of retirement, again, by his unhinged pal Marvin (John Malkovich), when they are falsely tied with Cold-War era nuclear plot by the name of 'Nightshade'.

Comic book movies have gotten a bit too serious of late. Dark. Brooding. Po-faced. Sure, we all loved Christopher Nolan’s tortured Dark Knight trilogy and Zack Snyder delivered the year’s most intelligent blockbuster (so far) with his gap year Superman slowly finding himself while bumming around being a crab fisherman in Man Of Steel. But does anyone really care if Tony Stark’s having nightmares and panic attacks in Iron Man 3? We just wanna see someone get punched through a building. And yeah, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine may be bad-ass but really he’s just Victor Meldrew with muttonchops and a bad manicure – a grumpy old codger whose memory ain’t what it used to be.

To be honest, if we wanted subtle character studies of damaged people we wouldn’t be watching a movie with the words Marvel Studios or DC Entertainment anywhere in the credits.

A movie like Red 2 doesn't have to go through much effort to be an entertaining piece of film. With a cast that includes Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, the chemistry and dynamic between all the main characters seems somewhat built-in. The guns in their hands and the bullets whizzing by their heads is just an icing on this cake. It seems like Bruce Willis is the undeniable king of appearing in unnecessary sequels. His conscience as of late has to have gone something like this: “Parts in The Expendables 2 and GI Joe: Retaliation, yeah sure why not?” Or how about, “Another Die Hard movie that’s basically an insult to the fundamental ideas of the original? Well if there’s a lucrative paycheck involved, then okay.” And I know it came out nearly ten years ago, but don’t even get me started on The Whole Ten Yards. Now we’ve got Red 2, one of those head-scratching sequels that make you wonder how it was even an option until you check the box office returns on the original. The first Red movie was made for a modest $58 million and made upwards of $199 million in domestic and foreign ticket sales.

As you most likely guessed from the title, “Red 2” is the sequel to a movie called “Red,” which, in reality, has little to nothing to do with the color. I had little interest in seeing Red 2 as I walked into the theater. The 2010 film was middling at best. In my review I described it as "one of those films you don't mind watching just as much as you don't seek it out." The same could be said of Red 2 and yet, it's a far better film that drops the need to focus energy on the fact the characters aren't your stereotypical, young CIA agents and international assassins. Instead it tells a story that just so happens to feature such characters. At just under two hours I walked in worried I'd want to leave 15 minutes in. "Red" was a surprise hit after its release in October of 2010. The film earned $90 million at the North American box office and $199 million worldwide. A follow-up to the movie adaptation of the comic book ‘Red’ (the term for CIA pensioners considered ‘Retired, Extremely Dangerous’) will see a reteaming of wise-cracking geriatric spies and now here is a new image from Red 2 courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.

The behind-the-scenes images were leaked two months ago, on set in Paris (below) showing Bruce Willis and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Now, we get the first official image of Mary-Louise Parker, Willis and John Malcovich in director Dean Parisot’s (Galaxy Quest) sequel to Summit’s hit action movie Red.

Plot details are currently slim on the sequel with Anthony Hopkins reportedly playing the main villain. I don’t think Morgan Freeman’s character named Joe really died in the first movie, but there will be a reason for Freeman’s absence.

Summit Entertainment’s action comedy movie Red was the top renting movie on both DVD and Blu-ray in 2011, according to Rentrak Home Video Essentials.

The movie, which stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich as agents who are Retired and Extremely Dangerous, topped the best renting lists on both formats since the year’s first quarter.

Overall renting revenue of discs dropping 3.4% during the year, compared to 2010, topping $5.65 billion. The last quarter of the year, during which the biggest movies are released, saw a 21.3% decrease in the DVD and Blu-ray rental market.

Still, disc rentals from kiosks grew 28% in Q4.

Action movies are a young man's game. Or they used to be, before Sylvester Stallone resurrected the hard-man genre last summer with his team of middle-aged action heroes in The Expendables (2010). On paper, The Social Network (2010, Sony, 12) sounds like the most boring film imaginable; an allegedly true-life tale of unlikable chauvinist posh kids sitting around in darkened rooms arguing about copyright law and occasionally going online. With the best will in the world, it's hardly Hackers, is it? It's great credit, therefore, to director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin that this multiple best film contender (could it beat The King's Speech at the Baftas?) is not merely intriguing but positively thrilling, maintaining a level of strangely sinister dramatic tension that belies its potentially dreary subject matter.

Chicago – After 2010, the Golden Globes should officially retire the category of “Best Musical or Comedy” for two reasons: 1. A staggeringly small percentage of American films annually fall under the category of “musical,” and 2. This year’s nominees were so embarrassingly awful that they instantly drained the category of any future credibility.

With the obvious exception of the family drama “The Kids Are All Right,” none of the nominated pictures were the least bit deserving of a Best Picture nod. Yet unlike “The Tourist,” “Burlesque” and (arguably) “Alice in Wonderland,” “Red” is the only nominee destined to spawn an ill-advised franchise. A sequel to “Red” would be wholly unnecessary, since the original film could easily function as its own sequel, remake and TV spin-off.

Summit Entertainment have just sent us a new press release confirming what we thought we already knew, that a sequel to their 2010 movie, Red has been greenlit. The press release informs us that none of the original stars of the movie (Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malcovich and Morgan Freeman – p.s. I’ve not actually seen it so maybe some of them died?!) have yet signed on, but no doubt that will change in the coming months.

With “Green Hornet” opening at the top of the box office to strong Mlk weekend numbers and similar genre satires like “Kick-Ass” and “Red” doing solid business, we may be entering the era of comic book action comedies.

Now “Red,” which was based on a comic by Warren Ellis & Cully Hamner, is enjoying the perks of earning all that green. Collider has learned that original screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber have been hired by Summit Entertainment to script a sequel to the studio’s highest grossing film outside the “Twilight” industry.

As you may know, “Red” (which stands for “Retired, Extremely Dangerous”) chronicled a bunch of over-the-hill former CIA black-ops agents being hunted down as part of a serpentine plot involving the Vice-President. Much gunblasting carnage ensued, and when all the smoke had cleared they had a surprise Golden Globe nomination to show for their trouble.

Remember that action comedy Red, nominated for Golden Globe but unfortunately lost?

Well, guys from the Summit Entertainment production made over a $100 million at the worldwide box office with that one, so they probably remember it very well.

So, guess what – the studio has rehired Red screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber to write a sequel!

Ok, the whole thing is still in the early stages, but as usual we’re here to share this interesting news with you.

Let us remind you that Red was released back in October and made $164 million worldwide. With a budget of $58 million it made a nice profit for the studio.

As you see, no such thing as a big detail at this moment when it comes to this project, but if you ask us, we’re definitely signing in for the sequel.

Retired Extremely Dangerous? Extremely Dangerous, yes. Retired? Not so much. THR confirms that Summit Entertainment has hired brothers Erich and Jon Hoeber to pen a sequel to their action-comedy hit. Made for a relatively “cheap” $58 million (given the A-list names in the cast and Hollywood filmmaking being what it is), the movie, based on a pretty grim and depressing Warren Ellis one-shot comic book, went on to earn $164 in worldwide box office thanks to its combination of laughs, ballsy action, and Helen Mirren with a machinegun. Thoughts I had while watching... Red (2010)

A few years ago I attended one of those New Yorker festival interviews that featured Mary-Louise Parker and the writer/moderator called her "a chameleon" after showing a clip of her from a movie I didn't recognize in which she wore a blond wig. It was the most ridiculous thing I heard that entire movie year.

Mary-Louise Parker is not a chameleon. Mary-Louise Parker plays Mary-Louise Parker. Like most enduring star actors, she's very very good at her one role.

Jilting its vibrant namesake, director Robert Schwentke’s pallid comic book movie is about as exciting as a grayscale rainbow. It’s a self-celebratory slog and one of the longest hour and fifty minutes I’ve spent at the movies this year. In my defense, its trailer was a calculated work of CIA-level deception — each moment is expertly chosen to give false impression that the whole is mindless fun. But mindless fun is only half right. There’s next to nothing to say about a film this unremittingly boring. I’d stop just short of calling it a failure, but the most incredible thing about Red is that such a lackluster script attracted such high-profile talent.

There’s been spooky goings on at the Us Box Office this past weekend as Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 2 took the top spot for it’s opening weekend. Raking in an estimated $41.5 million, the film, which was shot for just $3 million has just made history as the highest grossing supernatural horror on an opening weekend. The position was previously held by The Grudge with $39.1 million. Jackass 3D came in at second place this time around, managing to keep in the high figures with an estimated $21.6 million. There has been rumour of a potential fourth Jackass movie (I’ve yet to actually see one of them), and with high performance figures like these that rumour is becoming ever more likely.

Schwentke's poorly scripted comedy thriller asks us to believe that Red is a CIA acronym for "Retired Extremely Dangerous", applied here to a former "black ops" assassin, a characteristically smug Bruce Willis who finds himself on the run from his middle-American retirement. To help him turn the tables on his mysterious pursuers, he recruits fellow CIA retirees, among them Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and a crazy John Malkovich, who's either blasting the scenery or eating it. They're joined by their onetime Kgb enemy, the lovable Ivan (Brian Cox), and a sentimental orgy of nostalgia for the good old days of the cold war ensues. This is painting by numbers for people who have trouble with mental arithmetic.
