If anticipation could be measured, it’s safe to say HBO’s Game of Thrones would hold the record. Until the time when that becomes possible, the show will have to settle for a different record, that being setting the most people on fire for an entertainment production. Fans must be drooling at the mere sound of this as it implies Daenerys has let her pets loose and they’re just torching the s**t out of everything in sight. Showrunner David Benioff spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the world record:
“In one battle scene we set more stuntmen on fire than have ever been simultaneously set on fire. Our stunt coordinator really wanted to get in the Guinness Book of World Records for this.”
While there isn’t a current record holder, as Guiness doesn’t keep track of these types of things, stunt-coordinator Rowley Irlam, who has seen...

When something becomes as insanely popular as the comic book movie genre, it’s inevitable that a hell of a lot of extremely famous actors will lend their talents to it. And as with the binary split of the fanbases, typical thinking says you’re either Marvel or you’re DC. Crossing the divide would surely be a gross act of betrayal?
Surprisingly, though, there are actually a high number of stars who have appeared in both.
For some fans, they are committing the eighth deadly sin. Such is the rivalry between Marvel and DC that they argue actors should pick a side and stick with it, especially if their first role struck a bum note. Hence why Ben Affleck’s casting as Batman, after murdering Daredevil, initially resulted in a very hostile backlash from comic book movie aficionados.
But Hollywood is a hell of a lot more...

It’s already inspired two films, but now it looks like Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's Red is heading to the small screen…
Remember Red and Red 2? The Bruce Willis-starring films based on Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's comic book series Red? Of course you do. Well, now, the same property is being adapted for TV.
NBC is the network behind this idea, and they’ve got Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber - who wrote the 2010 film, and its sequel – at the helm. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian – who produced the films – are involved, too.
There’s no word yet on what the announcement of this TV series means for the rumours of a Red 3 film, but our best guess is that the TV show has taken its place, seeing as so much the behind-the-scenes talent has jumped ship to the telly realm. That’s...

The arrival of The Expendables 3 leads James to the conclusion that, when it comes to being an action hero, age is just a number...
"All I have produced before the age of 70 is not worth taking into account. At 73 I have learned a little... a little about the real structure of nature, of animals, plants, trees, birds, fishes and insects. In consequence when I am 80, I shall have made still more progress. At 90 I shall penetrate the mystery of things; at 100 I shall certainly have reached a marvellous stage; and when I am 110, everything I do, be it a dot or a line, will be alive." - Hokusai, the Japanese artist who painted the famous 'Great Wave off Kanagawa' and kept on creating astounding art until his death at the age of 88.

An action movie like Red 2, which is based on characters from Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s comic book, isn’t exactly burdened with the restrictions of reality. Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) and his collection of Retired Extremely Dangerous operatives can blow up city blocks, surreptitiously hop-scotch across the globe, and ingeniously escape from the most dire of circumstances; and if some of their Houdini breakouts are borderline unbelievable, well… that’s part of the fun.
In Red 2, which arrives on Blu-ray tomorrow, Moses reunites with aging agents (Helen Mirren and John Malkovich) and his best gal (Mary-Louise Parker...

★★☆☆☆ We've certainly been heavily dosed with geriatric action thrillers in recent years, with Arnie taking on The Last Stand, Sylvester Stallone heading up The Expendables and Bruce Willis popping up in anything his agent prescribes. However, none can boast the hospital waiting room worth of talent of Red 2 (2013). Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins join Willis as contract killer OAPs codenamed REDs - Retired, Extremely Dangerous - who first moseyed onto our screens with the sleeper hit original in 2010. Willis reprises his role as former CIA officer Frank Moses, who's now settled into domesticity.
Alongside sweetheart Sarah (Mary Louise Parker), Frank is now more used to doing the weekly shop at Costco (the first of many shameless product placements) than pistol-whipping hired goons. He's lured out of retirement, again, by his unhinged pal Marvin (John Malkovich), when they are falsely tied with Cold-War era nuclear plot by the name of 'Nightshade'.

Title: Red 2 Directed By: Jon & Erich Hoeber Starring: Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Byung Hun Lee, Neal McDonough The details of the mission are a little sloppy, but the appeal of watching Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren rock some serious firepower is still there, making “Red 2” another satisfying Retired and Extremely Dangerous thrill. Frank (Willis) is back to trying to live the quiet life again until Marvin (Malkovich) interrupts his Costco shopping session to warn him that Nightshade has come back to haunt them. Comic book movies have gotten a bit too serious of late. Dark. Brooding. Po-faced. Sure, we all loved Christopher Nolan’s tortured Dark Knight trilogy and Zack Snyder delivered the year’s most intelligent blockbuster (so far) with his gap year Superman slowly finding himself while bumming around being a crab fisherman in Man Of Steel. But does anyone really care if Tony Stark’s having nightmares and panic attacks in Iron Man 3? We just wanna see someone get punched through a building. And yeah, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine may be bad-ass but really he’s just Victor Meldrew with muttonchops and a bad manicure – a grumpy old codger whose memory ain’t what it used to be.
To be honest, if we wanted subtle character studies of damaged people we wouldn’t be watching a movie with the words Marvel Studios or DC Entertainment anywhere in the credits.

Bruce Willis is fast becoming the poster boy for retirement-refusal – his Die Hard franchise is perhaps growing a little flaccid but there is no denying the man’s commitment to kicking ass as he draws closer to the big 6-0. In 2010 he good-naturedly embraced the comedy potential of his position and – together with Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman – was classified Retired Extremely Dangerous aka Red.
Red – based upon the Warren Ellis/Cully Hamner graphic novel – was an entertaining ride, modelled after classic ‘30s screwball comedies, it delighted in offering opposition to the Oap stereotype and made reasonable use of its exemplary cast. Now the team have reunited for another caper: this time they are on a quest to locate a deadly device that has gone astray. The next-generation gadget, nicknamed ‘Nightshade’, has the potential to shift the balance of world power and is being sought by some of...

Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren return for another go-round at the spies, guns and intrigue thing as the Retired Extremely Dangerous crew. Also back from the original: Mary-Louise Parker as civilian Sarah Ross. As a follow-up to the 2010 surprise hit (which was itself based on the DC comic book), the sequel keeps the one-liners flowing and the Ocean's Thirteen vibe alive in an adventure that spans the globe. The plot concerns some device that threatens one of the world's biggest cities, but don't worry about it. Sibling screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber take their inspiration from the cheeky Roger Moore era of James Bond, so nothing's ever so dire that a funny quip by Mirren about weapons of mass...

If the very idea of aging, respected actors going “chuk-chuk” as they pump shotguns makes you titter with glee, then by all means don’t let me stop you from seeing Red 2, because it certainly delivers on that score. What some of us call the Fallacy of the Profane Grandpa — older actors saying and doing wacky, nasty things — has been around forever. (Alan Arkin won an Oscar for it not too long ago.) Now we have the Fallacy of the Locked and Loaded Grandpa (and Grandma). It’s a gag that wore out its welcome long ago; I vaguely recall laughing back in 1993, when Hard Target featured a slow-motion shot of Wilford Brimley riding away in slo-mo from an exploding house. Today it’s just another thing. In case you didn’t know, Red is a code name that stands for “Retired and Extremely Dangerous.” In the previous film,...

A movie like Red 2 doesn't have to go through much effort to be an entertaining piece of film. With a cast that includes Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, the chemistry and dynamic between all the main characters seems somewhat built-in. The guns in their hands and the bullets whizzing by their heads is just an icing on this cake. Without even seeming to try all that hard, Red 2 ends up being loads more entertaining than its predecessor, giving us a constant barrage of bullets and fun actors seemingly having the time of their lives. At least Willis is smiling. As with the first film, the one-time John McClane plays Frank Moses, the former CIA agent and hunter/killer extraordinaire who is now enjoying a peaceful retirement - Red stands for Retired and Extremely Dangerous - with his new girlfriend, Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker). When his old "hunting" buddy,...

It seems like Bruce Willis is the undeniable king of appearing in unnecessary sequels. His conscience as of late has to have gone something like this: “Parts in The Expendables 2 and GI Joe: Retaliation, yeah sure why not?” Or how about, “Another Die Hard movie that’s basically an insult to the fundamental ideas of the original? Well if there’s a lucrative paycheck involved, then okay.” And I know it came out nearly ten years ago, but don’t even get me started on The Whole Ten Yards. Now we’ve got Red 2, one of those head-scratching sequels that make you wonder how it was even an option until you check the box office returns on the original. The first Red movie was made for a modest $58 million and made upwards of $199 million in domestic and foreign ticket sales.

In 2010, Red successfully mixed a mostly unknown director, a modest budget, and a cast of actors who were—how to put this delicately—all “of a certain age,” to become a surprise hit (over $200 million worldwide). Well, the entire Red ( “Retired, Extremely Dangerous”) gang of Frank, Sarah, Victoria, Ivan, and Marvin are back with more fun amid the action and blazing gun battles.
Beginning some time after the first film, Frank (Bruce Willis) is eagerly planning all the home improvement projects he can work on now that he’s safe with Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker). Let loose in a hardware store, Frank is like a kid in a candy shop; unfortunately, his enthusiasm is not shared by Sarah, who loves Frank but wistfully wishes for more of the thrilling man of adventure she met in the first film. Enter Marvin, with his usual paranoid fears of being watched and targeted,...

The gang's (mostly) all back for "Red 2," the sequel to the 2010 hit about aging spies who are "Retired, Extremely Dangerous," and it's even -- dare we say -- more fun than the first one.
Bruce Willis stars again as former CIA black ops agent Frank Moses, only this time his girlfriend (Mary-Louise Parker) wants a piece of the action. He's joined by his psychotic partner in mayhem, Marvin (John Malkovich), the gun-toting Victoria (Helen Mirren), and several newcomers to the franchise, including Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins as Katja and Bailey (more on them below).
In this second go-round, Frank is trying to stay retired, but a leaked document linking him and Marvin to a still-hot Cold War operation lands them on everyone's hit list. As they try to save their own necks, the fate of the world falls on their shoulders as well.

As you most likely guessed from the title, “Red 2” is the sequel to a movie called “Red,” which, in reality, has little to nothing to do with the color. Instead we’re talking about an acronym that, in this instance, stands for “Retired Extremely Dangerous.” This is a designation the CIA, at least in the world of Warren Ellis’ comic that serves as the source material, gives to former agents that could still prove to be a threat down the road. They may not be in the field anymore, but they’re still good at killing. Who knows if this is a real thing or not? Never having worked for the CIA, or any intelligence gathering agency for that matter, I can offer no insight on the matter. I have, however, seen “Red,” so I feel qualified to chime in on that side of the conversation. Many of you have likely also seen “Red,...

I had little interest in seeing Red 2 as I walked into the theater. The 2010 film was middling at best. In my review I described it as "one of those films you don't mind watching just as much as you don't seek it out." The same could be said of Red 2 and yet, it's a far better film that drops the need to focus energy on the fact the characters aren't your stereotypical, young CIA agents and international assassins. Instead it tells a story that just so happens to feature such characters. At just under two hours I walked in worried I'd want to leave 15 minutes in. Fact of the matter is, the film goes by smoothly, largely benefiting because it gets back to action that's tangible rather than merely a dull exercise in CG overload (aka the official motto of Summer Movie Season 2013). All summer long we've watched...

There's almost something admirable in the brisk, breezy way that Red 2 plays out. The shtick about a series of retired cold warriors being drawn once again into another fracas should feel stale, yet in the capable hands of a strong director and a world-class band of extremely talented actors, the film works quite well. The first film's director, Robert Schwentke, has gone on to helm R.I.P.D., also opening shortly, and so the second edition of "Retired, Extremely Dangerous" is shot by Dean Parisot, director of the criminally underrated Galaxy Quest. In several ways, the sequel is superior to the first; there's a lightness of comedy touch, which is often quite effective. Bruce Willis and John Malkovich make a tremendous buddy team, but it's Mary-Louise Parker...

It's a bitterly cold December afternoon on the set of Red 2 in London's Tobacco Dock, and inside a cavernous underground warehouse a lone electric heater attempts to provide some warmth for cast, crew and a visiting reporter. Watching Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren team up to blow enemies away with machine guns and explosives has an undeniable charm and it goes to show. Once an assassin, always an assassin seems to be the moral of Red 2.
In the second trailer for the sequel to 2010′s successful comedy/action flick Red, Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) and his girlfriend Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker) attempt retirement normalcy, which means a trip to Costco. But, how could the ordinary suffice for someone so used to action? “You haven’t killed anybody in months,” Marvin Boggs (John Malkovich) helpfully reminds him. Besides, someone has just framed Frank and Marvin for a Cold War-era plot to get a destructive device into Russia, which has just been reassembled and activated.

2010 was a big year for aging action heroes with the release of both Red and The Expendables. However, instead of a group of work-for-hire mercenaries, Red followed a group of retired CIA agents (the title stood for "Retired, Extremely Dangerous") led by Bruce Willis who reassemble after they discover that the agency is out to eliminate Willis. "Red" was a surprise hit after its release in October of 2010. The film earned $90 million at the North American box office and $199 million worldwide. "Red" even grabbed a surprise Golden Globe nomination in the Best Picture Musical or Comedy category, because nothing is more reputable than a stamp of approval from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Add all that together and you get this: "Red 2," a sequel to the hit first film.
Based on the DC Comics series about a retired CIA operative forced back into action (Red stands for "Retired, Extremely Dangerous), "Red 2" reunites cast members Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker and Helen Mirren while also adding Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sir Anthony Hopkins to the mix. The result appears to be a globe-trotting action-comedy thriller, with parts that recall the first "Red," parts that recall "Ocean's 12" (never a bad thing) and a perhaps nod to...

A follow-up to the movie adaptation of the comic book ‘Red’ (the term for CIA pensioners considered ‘Retired, Extremely Dangerous’) will see a reteaming of wise-cracking geriatric spies and now here is a new image from Red 2 courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.
The behind-the-scenes images were leaked two months ago, on set in Paris (below) showing Bruce Willis and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Now, we get the first official image of Mary-Louise Parker, Willis and John Malcovich in director Dean Parisot’s (Galaxy Quest) sequel to Summit’s hit action movie Red.
Plot details are currently slim on the sequel with Anthony Hopkins reportedly playing the main villain. I don’t think Morgan Freeman’s character named Joe really died in the first movie, but there will be a reason for Freeman’s absence.
Also starring Helen Mirren, Byung-Hun Lee, Karl Urban, Neal McDonough and David Thewlis, with a screenplay from Erich and Jon Hoeber,...

On Thursday, February 16, 2011, in an interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, Foster Friess, one of the billionaire funders of the Super Pac (Political Action Committee) backing Rick Santorum, said, “Back in my days, they used Bayer aspirin for contraceptives. The gals put it between their knees, and it wasn’t that costly.”

I really enjoyed Red, the action comedy which starred Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren as former C.I.A. agents who find themselves classified as "Retired, Extremely Dangerous". So I'm delighted that a sequel has been announced with Dean Parisot set to direct, taking over from original director Robert Schwentke. Parisot is best known for Galaxy Quest, with Tim Allen and Alan Rickman. His last feature was in 2005 with Fun With Dick And Jane. The original cast are expected to return for the sequel, which is targeting an August 2013 release date. Source: The Hollywood Reporter...

Dean Parisot appears set to take over Red 2 , says a story at The Hollywood Reporter . Robert Schwentke directed the 2010 original which, in turn, was based on a comic book by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer. Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren are all expected to reprise their roles as a team of CIA operatives who are classified "Retired, Extremely Dangerous". Parisot is best known for directing 1999's Galaxy Quest . His last theatrical feature was 2005's Fun with Dick and Jane . The Summit Entertainment release is expected to enter production later this year, targeting an August 2, 2013 release.

Bruce Willis.s retired hitman movie Red was a lot more fun that expected, due in no small part to a scene stealing performance from John Malkovich, and it did surprisingly well at the box office too. I suspect its solid earnings may have something to do with elderly people showing up to see people their own age kick ass. .Red. stands for Retired and Extremely Dangerous, and when I showed up to see the movie a couple of weeks into its theatrical run I was by far the youngest person in its audience. Old people love to see their peers shooting younger people in the head, apparently, so Summit Entertainment is churning out a sequel. MTV caught up with Red producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura who offered an update on what it.ll be all about. They plan to bring back the previous cast, which means you should expect to...

Sun City - What are you going to when it comes time to retire? Do you really have enough money saved up to last you for the rest of your life? Can you hold out till Willard Scott puts you on the Smuckers jar and wishes you a happy 100th? Will you really be enjoying the good life with round the clock sponge baths from young orderlies? Have you done the math to figure out how much it’ll cost for a day at a retirement community in 20 years? Can your 401K hold out?
Odds are the answer is a resounding, “Maybe?”

Action movies are a young man's game. Or they used to be, before Sylvester Stallone resurrected the hard-man genre last summer with his team of middle-aged action heroes in The Expendables (2010). Now there's a fourth Mission: Impossible on the way with Tom Cruise still firmly strapped into the lead role, and even Tony Scott has been talking up the possibility of a Top Gun sequel. Middle-age, it seems, is no longer a barrier to kicking ass.

The Social Network; Buried; Red; Vampires Suck
On paper, The Social Network (2010, Sony, 12) sounds like the most boring film imaginable; an allegedly true-life tale of unlikable chauvinist posh kids sitting around in darkened rooms arguing about copyright law and occasionally going online. With the best will in the world, it's hardly Hackers, is it? It's great credit, therefore, to director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin that this multiple best film contender (could it beat The King's Speech at the Baftas?) is not merely intriguing but positively thrilling, maintaining a level of strangely sinister dramatic tension that belies its potentially dreary subject matter.
For Sorkin, misanthropic computer nerd Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) is the perfect storm, combining both the technical ability and the desperate need to conjure a social networking revolution. The irony of a game-changing communication system being pioneered by a socially inept dweeb with a fundamental inability to...

Chicago – After 2010, the Golden Globes should officially retire the category of “Best Musical or Comedy” for two reasons: 1. A staggeringly small percentage of American films annually fall under the category of “musical,” and 2. This year’s nominees were so embarrassingly awful that they instantly drained the category of any future credibility.
With the obvious exception of the family drama “The Kids Are All Right,” none of the nominated pictures were the least bit deserving of a Best Picture nod. Yet unlike “The Tourist,” “Burlesque” and (arguably) “Alice in Wonderland,” “Red” is the only nominee destined to spawn an ill-advised franchise. A sequel to “Red” would be wholly unnecessary, since the original film could easily function as its own sequel, remake and TV spin-off.
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0

Summit Entertainment have just sent us a new press release confirming what we thought we already knew, that a sequel to their 2010 movie, Red has been greenlit. The press release informs us that none of the original stars of the movie (Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malcovich and Morgan Freeman – p.s. I’ve not actually seen it so maybe some of them died?!) have yet signed on, but no doubt that will change in the coming months.
Check out the press release in full below and then tell us in the comments section, what are your thoughts on a sequel?

With “Green Hornet” opening at the top of the box office to strong Mlk weekend numbers and similar genre satires like “Kick-Ass” and “Red” doing solid business, we may be entering the era of comic book action comedies.
Now “Red,” which was based on a comic by Warren Ellis & Cully Hamner, is enjoying the perks of earning all that green. Collider has learned that original screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber have been hired by Summit Entertainment to script a sequel to the studio’s highest grossing film outside the “Twilight” industry.
As you may know, “Red” (which stands for “Retired, Extremely Dangerous”) chronicled a bunch of over-the-hill former CIA black-ops agents being hunted down as part of a serpentine plot involving the Vice-President. Much gunblasting carnage ensued, and when all the smoke had cleared they had a surprise Golden Globe nomination to show for their trouble.

Remember that action comedy Red, nominated for Golden Globe but unfortunately lost?
Well, guys from the Summit Entertainment production made over a $100 million at the worldwide box office with that one, so they probably remember it very well.
So, guess what – the studio has rehired Red screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber to write a sequel!
Ok, the whole thing is still in the early stages, but as usual we’re here to share this interesting news with you.
Let us remind you that Red was released back in October and made $164 million worldwide. With a budget of $58 million it made a nice profit for the studio.
As you see, no such thing as a big detail at this moment when it comes to this project, but if you ask us, we’re definitely signing in for the sequel.
We would like to see again Retired Extremely Dangerous team especially if soft-hearted killer Bruce Willis,...

Retired Extremely Dangerous? Extremely Dangerous, yes. Retired? Not so much. THR confirms that Summit Entertainment has hired brothers Erich and Jon Hoeber to pen a sequel to their action-comedy hit. Made for a relatively “cheap” $58 million (given the A-list names in the cast and Hollywood filmmaking being what it is), the movie, based on a pretty grim and depressing Warren Ellis one-shot comic book, went on to earn $164 in worldwide box office thanks to its combination of laughs, ballsy action, and Helen Mirren with a machinegun. While screenwriters have been hired, this doesn’t mean the sequel has been officially greenlit by Summit, but shelling out the bucks for a script is a good sign that the studio is doing more than just thinking about making a sequel. When the studio does decide to go ahead, though, they’ll have to sign back stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich,...

Thoughts I had while watching... Red (2010)
A few years ago I attended one of those New Yorker festival interviews that featured Mary-Louise Parker and the writer/moderator called her "a chameleon" after showing a clip of her from a movie I didn't recognize in which she wore a blond wig. It was the most ridiculous thing I heard that entire movie year.
Mary-Louise Parker is not a chameleon. Mary-Louise Parker plays Mary-Louise Parker. Like most enduring star actors, she's very very good at her one role.
This random memory came to me while watching Red, the October action comedy (yes, I'm two months late.) about Retired and Extremely Dangerous operatives, that the Golden Globe and Satellite voters unfortunately tossed into the precursor-mandated viewing schedule.
In the film Mary-Louise Parker plays Mary-Louise Parker with a headset. She works a boring job answering phones in some payroll divison of government and she...

Red Directed by: Robert Schwentke Written by: Jon & Erich Hoeber (screenplay), Warner Ellis and Cully Hamner (graphic novel) Starring: Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss Red is bland. Jilting its vibrant namesake, director Robert Schwentke’s pallid comic book movie is about as exciting as a grayscale rainbow. It’s a self-celebratory slog and one of the longest hour and fifty minutes I’ve spent at the movies this year. In my defense, its trailer was a calculated work of CIA-level deception — each moment is expertly chosen to give false impression that the whole is mindless fun. But mindless fun is only half right. There’s next to nothing to say about a film this unremittingly boring. I’d stop just short of calling it a failure, but the most incredible thing about Red is that such a lackluster script attracted such high-profile talent.

There’s been spooky goings on at the Us Box Office this past weekend as Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 2 took the top spot for it’s opening weekend. Raking in an estimated $41.5 million, the film, which was shot for just $3 million has just made history as the highest grossing supernatural horror on an opening weekend. The position was previously held by The Grudge with $39.1 million. Expect an announcement on Paranormal Activity 3 sometime soon, meanwhile you can read Martyn’s review of Paranormal Activity 2 to keep you going.
Jackass 3D came in at second place this time around, managing to keep in the high figures with an estimated $21.6 million. There has been rumour of a potential fourth Jackass movie (I’ve yet to actually see one of them), and with high performance figures like these that rumour is becoming ever more likely.

Schwentke's poorly scripted comedy thriller asks us to believe that Red is a CIA acronym for "Retired Extremely Dangerous", applied here to a former "black ops" assassin, a characteristically smug Bruce Willis who finds himself on the run from his middle-American retirement. To help him turn the tables on his mysterious pursuers, he recruits fellow CIA retirees, among them Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and a crazy John Malkovich, who's either blasting the scenery or eating it. They're joined by their onetime Kgb enemy, the lovable Ivan (Brian Cox), and a sentimental orgy of nostalgia for the good old days of the cold war ensues. This is painting by numbers for people who have trouble with mental arithmetic.

Maybe the best gadget any spy has is the ability to magically stop aging in their forties. We should all be so lucky. Then again, if they didn't age, we'd have been cheated out of the treat that is Red.
