      Initially, NBC executives thought the show would fail for competing against Let's Make a Deal (1963), which had aired on ABC after they left NBC in 1968 due to disputes, and the CBS soap As the World Turns (1956), but instead the show wound up becoming a hit and stayed for the next three years, becoming the time period's only hit series.
