Every awards season, movie fans and aspiring pundits across the country become obsessed with the ever-coveted Academy Awards. The longstanding awards show has long been considered the holy grail of the film industry and can often feel like an all-encompassing part of the discourse, particularly around the four acting categories. In the lead-up to Oscar Sunday, many of us debate who will win, and once the ceremony comes and goes, there are still debates over who should have won.
Amidst this hubbub, it's important to remember that the Oscars are but a modicum of what represents the best performances in film. In fact, several of the best actors working today have never been given the honor of an Oscar despite years of treasured performances. The disparity between what Oscar voters love and what history remembers has always been a widening gap, but we can guarantee these 15 omissions from the winner's circle are particularly egregious.

In the vast world of the entertainment industry, several actors have portrayed blood-thirsty, menacing beings called Vampires. Among them is Ian Somerhalder, whose role as Damon Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries has made him a global superstar and a fan favorite. His impeccable portrayal of the brooding and reckless Salvatore brother has continued to amaze fans even today, making them revisit the world of Mystic Falls over and over again.

Given the great job he did in bringing Damon to life, one can’t help but wonder what other pop culture-famous Vampires he took inspiration from. While he did have a few inspirations, the actor, however, refused to see Robert Pattinson’s Twilight movies.

It’s almost the Oscars season, and the list of nominations is already out—and we are shocked to know that Willem Dafoe has once again been snubbed for the nth time! The veteran actor starred in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu as Prof. Albin Eberhart Von Franz, and the disregard for his exceptional performance by the Academy voters is truly a massive crime.

Nosferatu is making waves on the list of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time as it climbs above a classic franchise. Robert Eggers' 2024 horror reimagining of the influential 1922 silent horror of the same name serves as an adaptation of the Dracula story. The Nosferatu cast features Bill Skarsgård in the titular role as Count Orlok, alongside Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Hoult, and Emma Corrin. The movie was released December 25 in the United States and recently passed a significant box office milestone.
Willem Dafoe starred in the 2000 independent film Shadow of the Vampire, a fictionalized account of the making of Nosferatu.
Per The Numbers, Nosferatu has climbed into the top 50 highest-grossing horror movies of all time. It has well exceeded the $100 million mark at the worldwide box office, posting a gross (to date) of $136.1 million. The film is sitting at #46 on the list of top 100 All Time...

Whenever Hollywood needs someone to play an eccentric character, they call upon the great Mads Mikkelsen. His entire filmography is filled with some of the most bizarre and interesting characters in the film industry. While Jürgen Voller and Galen Erso are poor examples of the same, things start to get more interesting when Le Chiffre and Hannibal Lecter are brought into the conversation.
Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal | Credit: NBC
His work in NBC’s Hannibal has brought him the most attention for playing characters who don’t fit into the black-and-white mold of morality. The romanticization of cannibalism done in the film perfectly fits with Mikkelsen’s portrayal of Lecter, causing him to be cast in similar roles throughout his career.
Interestingly enough, the actor almost played the role of another romanticized villain recently. However, one cannot help but wonder if he would have been the right person for the role.

Daniel Day-Lewis as Count Dracula? In another world, director Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu" could've given us just that.
"Nosferatu" evokes images of silent movie actor Max Shreck in a bald cap and pointed ears as he played the vampire Count Orlok. But in Eggers' new "Nosferatu," Orlok actor Bill Skarsgård looks nothing like that — or himself, even.
Similar to Skarsgård's performance as Pennywise in "It," he totally submits himself over to the character, disappearing behind make-up and (in "Nosferatu") an echo effect on his voice. I agree wholeheartedly with /Film's Chris Evangelista that when you watch Skarsgård's Orlok, you don't feel as if you're seeing a performance, but a true evil walking on screen. In that way, it's the most fully inhabited villain performance I can recall since Heath Ledger's Joker in "The Dark Knight."
Now, this can all sound like a backhanded compliment, treating Skarsgård as a mere stand-in...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: a trio of music videos directed by E. Elias Merhige. Several famous directors have tackled remakes of Nosferatu, most noticeably Werner Herzog, and now Robbert Eggers. But one re-adaptation of Nosferatu, called Shadow of the Vampire, flew kind of under the radar. Its director is E. Elias Merhige, who has had an erratic but interesting career, starting out with the avant-garde arthouse-horror Begotten; following it up with the aforementioned film about Nosferatu-portrayer Max Schreck being a real-life vampire; making the interesting serial killer thriller Suspect Zero, and then continuing the work in the Begotten-trilogy by finishing it with the shorts Din of Celestial Birds and Polia...

If Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” is your first introduction to the lesser-known vampire tale, you may be surprised how similar it is to Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.”
This vamp (played by Bill Skarsgård) also lives in a castle in remote Eastern Europe and travels to London by boat, with nearly all the same story beats as in the 1897 novel. But F. W. Murnau’s silent movie changed a few details, including character names, to avoid copyright infringement: Count Dracula is now named Count Orlok, Jonathan Harker becomes Thomas Hutter, etc.
Despite these slight alterations, Stoker’s heirs easily spotted the striking resemblance and sued. A court found in favor of the Stoker estate and ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed.

Bill Skarsgård may be the latest actor to terrify audiences as Count Orlok, but this year’s Nosferatu remake almost cast one of three other famous actors before him. Based on the 1992 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, this latest reinterpretation sees Skarsgård assume the role first played by German film star Max Schreck. However, before being offered the role of the film’s titular vampire, Skarsgård had originally auditioned for and been offered Nicholas Hoult’s role of Thomas Hutter.
Speaking with Swedish film site Moviezine, Skarsgård explained that in the movie’s earliest incarnations, director Robert Eggers was considering several well-known actors to play Count Orlok. In addition to mentioning Daniel Day-Lewis and Mads Mikkelsen, Skarsgård also revealed that his co-star Willem Dafoe was also slated to play him before landing the role of Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz. Check out a translation of his comments below:...

This article contains mild spoilers for "Nosferatu."
There is much within Robert Eggers' film "Nosferatu" that is to be expected. If you're familiar with the prior cinematic incarnations of Dracula, vampire movies in general, Eggers' filmography, or some combination of all three, then you're not necessarily going to be surprised by everything in the film. There's a lot of bloodletting, a palpable sense of dread, an authenticity of time and place, and a psychosexual relationship between the vampire Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) and his victims — all aspects that foreknowledge of vampire movies and Eggers' work should prepare you for.
However, part of the joy that comes with following the work of a true auteur is seeing how much they can still surprise you, even as they remain true to their quirks and proclivities. "Nosferatu" is as undeniably Eggers' film as it is a quintessential vampire movie, and yet it's honestly...

With the arrival of Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu," we can say one thing for certain: Bill Skarsgård is really good at stepping into the roles of iconic horror movie monsters. Skarsgård has seemingly pulled off this minor miracle twice, with stunning results both times. In 2017's "It," Skarsgård slathered on some greasepaint to play Pennywise the Dancing Clown (a role he's reprising in the upcoming Max series "Welcome to Derry"), the malevolent shape-shifter prone to hanging out in sewers and chowing down on kids. It was no small feat. While 2017's "It" was the first feature adaptation of Stephen King's tome of terror, it wasn't the first time the material had made it to the screen. Back in 1990, "It" was adapted into a TV miniseries, and featured the legendary Tim Curry as Pennywise. When word broke that "It" was being adapted again, fans of the miniseries all seemed to share...

Nosferatu star Willem Dafoe is reflecting on his own Count Orlok performance from the 2000 movie Shadow of the Vampire. The upcoming remake, directed by Robert Eggers, who collaborated with Dafoe on The Lighthouse and The Northman, depicts a nightmarish encounter with the eponymous vampire. In the film, Dafoe portrays Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, a source of authority regarding Count Orlok. However, the Nosferatu star famously played a version of this mysterious Transylvanian monster in E. Elias Merhige’s Oscar-nominated Shadow of the Vampire, an imaginary tale of Max Schreck (Dafoe) during the original Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, ahead of the Nosferatu premiere, Dafoe looked back on his Count Orlok portrayal. He expressed a fondness for Shadow of the Vampire and explained how makeup can impact a performance by allowing an actor to see themselves in character. Read some of his comments below:
That was a wonderful experience.

A longstanding and well respected Hollywood staple, Willem Dafoe is one of modern cinema's most prominent success stories. A frequent collaborator with acclaimed filmmakers like Wes Anderson, Robert Eggers, and Yorgos Lanthimos, Dafoe's best movies have earned him four Academy Award nominations to date across the course of a long and storied career, with the actor featuring across virtually every genre of film imaginable. However, while Dafoe's career may be thriving, the same cannot be said for many of his film characters.
Much like The Lord of the Rings' star Sean Bean, the actor's dramatic charges have an unfortunate habit of dying before the credits roll, often in comically brutal fashion. Dafoe is more than aware of the status quo when it comes to his characters' frequent movie deaths, admitting in an interview with Empire magazine that he loves watching his characters bite the dust onscreen. Sometimes books are mega hits and get turned into movies that take off. There’s just something that captures the zeitgeist and it’s destined to be. Harry Potter came out of nowhere and then turned into a franchise of books, video games, Lego sets, and of course movies. Other times, authors release something that will undoubtedly get picked up as the track record for success is already there. This is the Stephen King special or even Michael Crichton when he was still active. Adaptations can come from cases of re-adaptations like Dracula, Frankenstein, and other classics that get recycled over and over again, especially of they fall into the public domain. There’s the rare case, though, that an unknown author has a manuscript pop and movie studios jump at the chance to create something new. The journey and strange tale of the author of Bird Box falls under that last category.

Nosferatu director Robert Eggers has already made it clear that we will not get a proper look at his new take on the titular vampire (played by It star Bill Skarsgård) until we're actually watching the horror remake, but a lot of critics have now seen the film, and some of the reviews contain some fairly in-depth descriptions of Count Orlok.
The vampire that was introduced in F.W. Murnau's original 1922 classic (played by Max Schreck) had a very distinctive look that will go down as one of the most iconic and influential monster designs of all time. Eggers' version does reportedly retain some elements of Schreck's ghoulish visage, but it sounds like some significant changes have been made.
If you'd rather know as little as possible about this new take on Count Orlok going in, spoilers follow.
Several reviews reference the new "Zombie Pirate" creature design, but Variety's is probably the most detailed.

With the reverential early-horror tribute that is “Nosferatu,” Robert Eggers has crafted more than just a remake, but somehow less than a fully satisfying filmgoing experience. Visually striking as it is, with compositions that rival great Flemish paintings, the obsessive director’s somber retelling of F.W. Murnau’s expressionistic vampire movie is commendably faithful to the 1922 silent film and more accessible than “The Lighthouse” and “The Witch,” yet eerily drained of life.
In re-creating what came before, Eggers is mindful of Murnau’s distinctive style, but is too gifted simply to mimic. Instead, the meticulously detail-oriented director offers his take on the classic, treating nearly every frame as a work of art unto itself, while further embellishing the story’s Romantic aspects — which might have succeeded, if not for the cast. “Nosferatu” builds to a tragic finale, but is weighed down by pretentious dialogue, somnolent pacing and weak performances, especially...

If there’s one horror genre that gets the blood pumping in this particular gore-hound; it’s vampires! Ever since the German silent classic, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, bared its teeth way back in 1922, I’ve been obsessed with the genre. And no, you cheeky undead humanoid creatures, I’m not old enough to have caught that movie way back when. I can’t even remember where I first caught the sight of Max Schreck as Count Orlok, but it left a lasting impression. Ever since, I’ve gorged on human blood, figuratively speaking of course, with everything from The Lost Boys, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Let the Right One In, to more action oriented series like Blade and Underworld. Plus many, many more. The small screen has also had its fair share of awesome vampire action, with the countless TV re-imaginings of Dracula, the sex and claret...

The career trajectory of character actor extraordinaire Willem Dafoe is one of the more unusual among contemporary Hollywood stars. From his early days of being routinely cast as a heavy, Dafoe worked his way through the system thanks to the sheer force of his talent, finally being cast as leads, often portraying in detail such real-life figures as actor Max Schreck, artist Vincent Van Gogh and even Jesus Christ.
Among Dafoe’s early bad guy roles were as biker gang leaders in both Kathryn Bigelow‘s “The Loveless” and Walter Hill‘s “Streets of Fire.” But his performance as kindly Sgt. The vampire subgenre in horror is greatly beloved and has a long history, meaning it's inevitable that general audiences have missed a few fun films throughout the years. While vampire movies aren't as popular anymore, releasing back-to-back as seen in previous years, the 2000s was an especially popular decade for bloodsucking creatures.
Great vampire films had already been around, but following the success of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show starting in 1997, films centered around the fanged species were everywhere. The 2000s is home to underrated vampire films, some more accomplished than others, that don't get as much love as the decade's heavy hitters. Well-versed vampire fans are likely to know films like Daybreakers and Shadow of the Vampire, but casual moviegoers often miss these films.

Vampire films are one of the oldest genres of horror movies to grace the silver screen, and it's no surprise why. A good vampire flick can be addictive and fantastical, leaving the audience wanting more from the mystical underworld in the story. Over time, vampire films grew in versatility, from the seriousness of Francis Ford Coppola's Gothic hit, Bram Stoker's Dracula, to the angsty vampire romance of the Twilight series.
As pop culture's obsession with vampires grows with Hollywood, many underrated vampire films can fly under the radar. Though less popular than some of the bigger vampire classics and series, many of these hidden gems bring something fresh and unique to Hollywood's fascination with these monsters. For example, films like Queen of the Damned expand upon the mythology of Interview with the Vampire, and Nosferatu introduces audiences to the Dracula-alternative, German depiction of vampires.

You have such a beautiful neck…and as it seems, Robert Eggers’ latest, Nosferatu, is living its mark on audiences. That might feel like a pun, but this film might be contending for one of the best of the year.
With just three films to his name so far, Robert Eggers quickly solidified himself as one of the premiere horror directors out there — and one isn’t even close to being in that genre: The Northman. However, Eggers might be heading towards the Oscars stage with Nosferatu, as it is earning some serious praise early on. Check out some of the initial reactions from social media, starting off with our very own Jimmy O’s take:
Our own @jimmytotheo says @Nosferatu is a stunning work of gothic horror. Beautiful performances throughout, however Lily-Rose Depp is simply luminous and Bill Skarsgard brings terror to the screen yet wraps it all in a layered character.

For over 100 years now, Nosferatu has been the ultimate cinematic vampire – or, ‘vampyr’, if you want to go really old-school – story. The crooked shadow of Fw Murnau's 1922 film still looms large over the genre, later reimagined by Werner Herzog in his 1979 Nosferatu. Even the making of Nosferatu still has its fangs in people, as fictionalised in 2000’s Shadow Of The Vampire, in which Willem Dafoe’s Max Schrek – the actor who played Count Orlok – turns out to actually be a vampire. All of which to say, Robert Eggers has big shoes to fill with his 2024 take on Nosferatu – conjuring a full-blooded vision of the classic story in all its gothic terror.
When it came to finding real-life locations befitting an ancient vampire’s lair, it was impossible not to reconnect with Nosferatu history. The gatehouse and courtyard of Count Orlok’s gaff in Eggers film was shot at Pernštejn...

“Nosferatu” is coming.
The new retelling of the F.W. Murnau classic, written and directed by Robert Eggers, arrives in theaters on Christmas Day. And the brand-new trailer for the historical horror epic, which stars Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson and Willem Dafoe, has flown in through an open window. Watch it below.
In “Nosferatu,” which was initially a loose retelling of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” changed just enough to skirt any copyright challenges, Depp plays a young woman who comes under the thrall of a supernatural evil (Skarsgård). Dafoe, who starred in “Shadow of the Vampire,” a fictionalized retelling of the making of “Nosferatu,” appears as the Van Helsing stand-in Prof. Albin Eberhart Von Franz. Hoult is Depp’s put-upon love interest.
“Nosferatu” has long been Eggers’ passion project, with the adaptation originally announced back in 2015. Eggers had initially cast Anya Taylor-Joy, reuniting...

The original “Nosferatu,” from all the way back in 1921, is scary. The German expressionist silent film, directed by early Hollywood filmmaker F.W. Murnau, is well-paced and shot with many shadows and sharp angles, producing a menacing effect. Plus, Max Schreck, as the lead Count Orlok, is just eerie and scary in the role. Enough so that a movie, “Shadow of the Vampire,” was made as a fictitious account of Schrek’s wild behavior on set.

He is coming.
That’s the ominous refrain throughout the first trailer for “Nosferatu,” writer-director Robert Eggers’ forthcoming take on the classic vampire tale.
And he has not arrived yet – the teaser builds anticipation by not revealing the monster, Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård). Instead, characters talk about him and show how his malign power still influences them from a distance. It’s an eerie trailer that showcases Eggers’ gift for creating a terrifying atmosphere.
Focus Features describes the film as “a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.”
“Nosferatu” is a retelling of F.W. Murnau’s legendary 1922 silent film of the same name, which is itself a German Expressionist take on “Dracula.” It is the second remake of “Nosferatu,” after Werner Herzog’s 1979 film “Nosferatu the Vampyre.”

Willem Dafoe stars in Robert Eggers' Nosferatu, portraying a mortal character, but isn't his first Nosferatu movie. Dafoe played a fictionalized version of Max Schreck as Nosferatu in Shadow of the Vampire. Dafoe's character in Eggers' Nosferatu is expected to play a role similar to Dracula's Van Helsing, but with some changes.
Robert Eggers Nosferatu counts on the talents of Willem Dafoe, but, surprisingly, this isnt Dafoe's first Nosferatu movie. Continuing the current trend of remakes in the horror genre is Robert Eggers Nosferatu, based on the 1922 German Expressionist vampire movie by F. W. Murnau, which, in turn, is an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stokers Dracula. Eggers Nosferatu is described as a Gothic tale of love, obsession, and blood between a mortal woman and a vampire, though not much has been revealed about its plot and how it could differ from the original movie.

Focus Features has released this first teaser for the highly anticipated Nosferatu.
Starring Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney and Willem Dafoe, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.
The German silent horror film released in 1922 was notable for being the earliest surviving film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and for its technically novel and effective cinematography. The teaser for Robert Eggers’ new film, ‘Nosferatu,’ dropped today, and the featured cast is stacked with an impressive list of talent. Eggers, who first hit the scene with the sinister 2015 film ‘The VVitch,’ has made a name for himself as a director who uses period-specific style to transport audiences to unfamiliar territories, from a desolate lighthouse in Nova Scotia to the brutal countryside of 10th century Iceland. But its the grounded performances from his talented casts that truly make Eggers’ films so memorable. If you’ve checked out the ‘Nosferatu’ teaser and the cast seemed familiar, IMDb is here to help you remember where you’ve seen these talented actors before.
Lily-Rose Depp
Lily-Rose Depp was most recently seen on Max’s short-lived drama series “The Idol,” where she played a pop star struggling back into the limelight with the help of a notorious nightclub owner. The actress stars in ‘Nosferatu’ as Ellen Hutter, the innocent object of the vampire’s desire.
Nicholas Hoult
‘Nosferatu’ isn’t the first time Nicholas Hoult has explored the realms of the undead. The talented British actor was the title role in the 2023 horror-comedy ‘Renfield,’ starred as a mute-but-caring zombie in ‘Warm Bodies,’ and played a key role as the half-life war boy Nux in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road.’ Now, he’ll step into the role of Thomas Hutter, husband to the afflicted Ellen Hutter played by Lily-Rose Depp.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson
Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Friedrich Harding is a ship merchant, which is likely a reinvention of the character played by Georg H. Schnell in the 1922 silent film version of ‘Nosferatu.’ If the actor seems familiar, it may be from his performance as Brian Tyree Henry’s twin brother Tangerine in last year’s action flick ‘Bullet Train,’ his supporting role as Pietro Maximoff in multiple Marvel movies, or his recent turn as a self-absorbed film star in ‘The Fall Guy.’
Willem Dafoe
Willem Dafoe is no stranger to playing vampires. The Academy Award-nominated actor starred in 2000’s ‘Shadow of the Vampire’ where he portrayed Max Schreck, the actor who played Nosferatu in the original silent film. You probably recognize Dafoe from some of his most famous 100+ acting credits, including last year’s ‘Poor Things’ and his two previous collaborations with Robert Eggers, ‘The Lighthouse’ and ‘The Northman.’
Ralph Ineson
The unmistakable deep voice of Ralph Ineson can be heard warning us that “he is coming.” The BAFTA Award nominee starred as Anya Taylor-Joy’s father in Robert Eggers’ first film, ‘The VVitch’ and lent his talents to the title role in A24’s ‘The Green Knight.’ You may have seen him this year as a priest on a mission in ‘The First Omen.’ In ‘Nosferatu,’ the actor will play Dr. Wilhelm Sievers, a role we can only assume will have to deal with the aftermath of the vampire’s attacks.
Bill Skarsgård
Although he is only shown as a silhouette in the trailer, Bill Skarsgård is set to star as the vampire Count Orlok, whose hunger for Ellen Hutter drives the story. Skarsgård has a history with the horror genre, playing Pennywise the clown in the two-part remake of ‘It’ and delivering a memorably unsettling performance in the indie hit ‘Barbarian.’ The Swedish actor’s horror bona fides continue to expand this year, as he takes on the role of Eric Draven in the remake of ‘The Crow.’
Emma Corrin
Also starring in ‘Nosferatu’ is Emma Corrin, known for her roles in Netflix’s “The Crown” as Princess Diana, as Darby Hart in “A Murder at the End of the World,” and in just a few weeks she’ll hit the big screen alongside Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ In ‘Nosferatu,’ she’ll play Anna Harding, wife to Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Friedrich Harding and likely friend to Lily-Rose Depp’s Ellen Hutter.

Making a film that trades on the mysterious production problems with the original The Exorcist seems like a good idea. But how to go about such a meta task?
Within the film-within-a-film genre, there’s a sub-genre: think Willem Dafoe as a vampire/actor in Shadow of the Vampire or Nicole Kidman as a witch/actor in the disastrous comedy flop Bewitched.
Obviously, remaking The Exorcist would be a daunting project. But The Exorcism is a film about that daunting project. And the lead character is possessed.
If you were expecting Regan, the girl, to be possessed, I can’t blame you. But no, this time, it’s the priest who is possessed.
The Exorcism has nothing in common with last year’s The Pope’s Exorcist except that RussellCrowe stars in both. It’s also not related to the recent Exorcist: Believer. But since they’re both Exorcist-inspired films with wide release,...

Robert Eggers shared his terrifying take on “Nosferatu,” offering up the atmospheric first look at his remake of the famous vampire film to theater owners at CinemaCon this week. In the trailer, Lily-Rose Depp, playing a devout young woman, prays earnestly by candlelight. “Come to me, come to me, hear my call,” she intones before a hand reaches out to grab her neck.
And we’re off, with Eggers’ camera sweeping across wintery villages, dilapidated castles filled with secrets, and rats scurrying across cobblestones, portending some kind of primeval force that’s about to cast a shadow over everything. The movie evokes the best of classic horror — it’s moody, unsettling and also eerily beautiful. But it’s not just artful. There’s also blood gushing from necks and gangs of stake-wielding villagers hoping to use folklore to battle these unseen forces.
“Does evil come from within us or from beyond?...

When Willem Dafoe receives his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Jan. 8, the distinction will commemorate more than just a four-time Oscar nominee, but an actor so versatile that he has embodied everything from a conflicted messiah in “The Last Temptation of Christ” to the tortured father figure of “Antichrist.” Is there an actor working today with greater range?
With his deep-set eyes, sharp nose and broad smile, Dafoe has depicted his share of devils, from creepy “Nosferatu” star Max Schreck in “Shadow of the Vampire” to comic-book villain the Green Goblin in “Spider-Man 2.” But he also excels at the other end of the spectrum, as when he plays God in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” a Frankensteinian surgeon charitably committed to reanimating dead creatures, like Emma Stone’s Bella.
“My character has this beautiful predicament, because he adores her so much and she adores him, but what she needs,...

Willem Dafoe addresses comparisons between his role in Robert Eggers’ upcoming Nosferatu remake and his turn in 2000’s Shadow Of The Vampire.
It’s been just under a year since Willem Dafoe was announced as part of the ensemble for Robert Eggers’ upcoming remake of Nosferatu, the horror classic that unleashed an unofficial Dracula adaptation on cinema screens all the way back in 1922. Dafoe’s casting made a few waves at the time, partly because of his acclaimed previous work with Eggers. Dafoe has previously collaborated with the director on 2022’s The Northman and 2019’s The Lighthouse and both of those creative partnerships turned out very well indeed.
However, it wasn’t just a general outpouring of appreciation for a third collaboration between the pair that had the internet buzzing at the time. What was particularly noteworthy was that Dafoe had previously played the role of Nosferatu in the acclaimed 2000 indie film,...

Twenty-three years ago, Willem Dafoe played actor Max Schreck in the film Shadow of the Vampire, which gave a behind-the-scenes look at the making of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) to reveal that Schreck really was a vampire. Now Dafoe has a role in The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of Nosferatu – but he’s not playing the title role. Instead, he’s playing a “crazy vampire hunter” named Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, and Entertainment Weekly has just unveiled an interesting image that shows Dafoe in character! You can check it out at the bottom of this article.
An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains.

Willem Dafoe is no stranger to the world of Nosferatu, as he famously played original Nosferatu actor Max Schreck in the 2000 movie Shadow of the Vampire. Dafoe returns to that arena in the upcoming Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman) remake of Nosferatu, only this time around he’s playing a human who’s hunting the vampire.
Entertainment Weekly has shared a new image from Nosferatu this morning, giving us our first look at Willem Dafoe’s character in the film, Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz.
Eggers describes the character as “a crazy vampire hunter.”
Focus Features will release Nosferatu in theaters for Christmas on December 25, 2024.
Willem Dafoe, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin and Lily-Rose Depp will star in Nosferatu, with Skarsgard playing Nosferatu/Count Orlok in the film.

Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe's performances in "Poor Things" could earn them nominations at the 2024 Oscars and potentially make Oscars history. Both actors have a chance to secure their fourth Best Supporting Actor nominations, tying the record for the most nominations in that category. Early consensus suggests that Ruffalo is more likely to receive the nomination, but Dafoe's consistent strong performances may still put him in the running.
The 2024 Oscars could see Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe take a place in Oscars history thanks to their roles in Poor Things. The 2023 movie from director Yorgos Lanthimos is coming out at the end of the year just in time to make a strong push during awards season. The initial reactions to the movie were quite strong and helped indicate that Lanthimos' first movie since The Favourite could once again strongly contend at the Oscars. How did you come to know our lord and savior, Count Orlok? If you're of a certain age, your first exposure might have come from the "SpongeBob SquarePants" episode "Graveyard Shift," in which the rascally vampire kept secretly flickering the lights during the night shift at the Krusty Krab. Or maybe you watched "Shadow of the Vampire," E. Elias Merhige's darkly comedic 2000 fictional account about the making of F.W. Murnau's 1922 German Expressionist classic "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror." Or perhaps you even saw Murnau's unauthorized "Dracula" adaptation itself or Werner Herzog's 1979 remake "Nosferatu the Vampyre" (which did away with any pretenses and just referred to Orlok as Count Dracula).
Whatever the case, Orlok has sunk his fangs deep into our collective pop-cultural consciousness these last 100-plus years. With his pallid visage, sunken eyes, and bald head, he just stands out from all those other blood-suckers, straddling the...

The remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) that’s coming our way from The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers was first announced back in 2015. The project finally went into production earlier this year and wrapped six months ago… but if you were hoping to see Eggers’ Nosferatu sometime in the next few months, we have some disappointing news to share today. The movie is still a year away. Focus Features has announced that they’ll be giving Nosferatu a theatrical release on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, “making it a prime holiday season release.”
