The guess can be understood, as one of Allen's most popular books, "Without Feathers," uses the poem in a story in the book. This is Allen's reference: "How wrong Emily Dickinson was! Hope is not "the thing with feathers." The thing with feathers has turned out to be my nephew. I must take him to a specialist in Zurich."
