Will was stated to be 48 while Charlotte is supposed to be 22, old enough to be her father. Richard Gere was 51 while Winona Ryder was actually 29 during production.
The film was recut against director Joan Chen's wishes, and has disowned the theatrical cut, remarking that the original cut of the film is her preferred version, and was better received in test screenings. One particularly notable cut is Winona Ryder's nude scene, which would have been the first in her career.
At about midway through, before the Halloween party, Charlotte quotes Emily Dickinson's "Hope is the thing with feathers" to hint at the person her costume is meant to represent and he guesses, "Woody Allen?" The guess can be understood, as one of Allen's most popular books, "Without Feathers," uses the poem in a story in the book. This is Allen's reference: "How wrong Emily Dickinson was! Hope is not "the thing with feathers." The thing with feathers has turned out to be my nephew. I must take him to a specialist in Zurich."
