Plot: A hilarious headbanger finally makes it after struggling for decades, revealing it was all because of a childhood incident when the dark forces of rock ‘n’ roll reached out from the grave.
Review: I was only eight years old in 1989. Still, I remember this pivotal year that brought the industrial power and angst of Nine Inch Nails‘s “Pretty Hate Machine,” the birth of the internet, and a tectonic shift in the music landscape, paving the way for bands like Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, and Hole to unseat rock ‘n’ roll as the dominant way to headbang and piss off your parents. Before the ’90s became a fashion crisis of drooping Jnco jeans, Sharpie marker skin tattoos, and bathroom sinks stained with Manic Panic, there were people like Dean Murdoch, a headbanger on the verge of emerging from his heavy metal cocoon in the small town of Haylen, Manitoba,...

Comedian Mark Critch shared his insights on his autobiographical TV series Son of a Critch, adapted from his memoir, in his new uInterview.
Son of a Critch follows Critch in his younger years, played by 15-year-old Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, as he comes of age in St. John’s, N.L., in the 1980s.
“The book is all about my life growing up in Newfoundland, Canada, which is on the East Coast of Canada,” Critch told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “We owned our dominion before we joined Canada in 1949 as a fishing place. The fishery was king.”
He continued, “The book was with Penguin Random House and did quite well then my friend. Tim Mcaullife, who was a writer for The Office, said, ‘We should make this into a TV show,’ so we pitched that and we did and here we are three seasons later. “

If you’re like me and haven’t heard of CBC’s Son of a Critch, I hope to change that. Like The Goldbergs, this sitcom is based on the life of its creator and also happens to be set in the 80s. But if there’s one thing missing from that show that Critch has in spades, it’s Malcolm McDowell. The actor has had such a storied career that seeing him in a sitcom is surprising. Yet everything about it works, and he looks to be having an absolute blast. So I was excited to be able to talk to both McDowell and the series creator, Mark Critch, about their show. I watched the first two episodes of the new season, and this kind of show is right up my alley. Very light-hearted, it has a bit of a Wonder Years vibe, and I love the “on-the-nose” narration.

Fox has picked up Canadian legal drama “Diggstown” from Entertainment One.
Created by Floyd Kane, and starring Vinessa Antoine, the series from Canadian public broadcaster CBC follows Marcie Diggs (Antoine), a star corporate lawyer who reconsiders her priorities and moves to work in a legal-aid office after her aunt commits suicide following the pressures of a malicious prosecution. Among a new group of ragtag lawyers, Marcie is driven by one thing: to never again allow innocent lives to be destroyed by the justice system.
Fox has swooped for seasons 1 and 2 of the drama. The acquisition marks the latest Canadian pick-up by a U.S. broadcaster — a trend that has grown in popularity in the last year as the Covid-19 crisis has stunted production Stateside but has had less of an impact north of the border.

Since its premiere in 2016, “Baroness Von Sketch Show” has consistently delivered smart, unexpected, rip-roaring comedy on a range of topics rarely addressed by typical sketch shows. Whether it’s the absurdist escalation of Red Wine Ladies’ Night, or the anti-misogynist virtue signaling of a Queer Theory Reading Group, “Baroness Von Sketch Show” took advantage of under-explored scenarios to produce hilarity that resonated with the everywoman. In its excellent fifth season, the group continues to make good on that promise with no sign of slowing down. Produced by the CBC and airing on IFC in the U.S., “Baroness Von Sketch Show” not only proves Canadian humor translates just fine, but when it comes to sketch comedy, they reign supreme.

Any Nathan For You fans who are looking for a fix between seasons should make there way to YouTube. There, they can find the official channel of Nathan Fielder, who spent six years releasing bizarre, deadpan sketch comedy before going on to create one of Comedy Central's most critically-acclaimed programs.
While he was active on YouTube, Fielder gained an audience of around 30,000 subscribers, but his channel went dormant in 2012 and has not been updated since. It recently returned to the spotlight thanks to a Reddit user, who shared Fielder's clip "Thin Watermelon" on the /r/videos forum.
The 32 videos Fielder uploaded to YouTube between 2006 and 2012 display the roots of his signature style. One sketch, titled "Widget," makes use of photo filters as the basis for a perfectly awkward slice of cringe comedy.

Speaking with Et Canada’s Sangita Patel, the cast of “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” make it very clear that while the characters continue to evolve and change, […]...

Comedy has taken Nathan Fielder to some pretty strange places, but nothing quite compares to the time he found himself walking a high wire between two seven-story buildings in downtown L.A. It was the finale of the third season of Nathan for You, the hit Comedy Central series in which Fielder offers preposterously elaborate assistance to small-business owners and other regular folks. For this episode, he took on his biggest project yet: transforming a deeply nerdy, semi-employed man who lives with his parents into a genuine hero. Fielder assumed the identity of Corey Calderwood,...

Cult comedy Baroness von Sketch Show may already be on its second season in its native Canada, but U.S. audiences are getting the chance to catch up on all the laughs now that the show is airing on IFC.
With shows like Portlandia, The Birthday Boys and Comedy Bang! Bang!, the network has been a haven for quirky, creative sketch comedy, but Baroness is a welcome niche in the crowded field: four women over 40 skewering the absurdities of everyday life. Where many other sketch shows are wildly over-the-top or lean towards bonkers scenarios, actor-writers Carolyn Taylor, Aurora Browne, Jennifer Whalen and Meredith MacNeill take things far enough to be hilarious, but not so insane that scenes are unrelatable.

The Great Old One is being summoned into the basement of a disused apartment building and the only man who can stop Cthulhu's arrival is wrestling great Rowdy Roddy Piper. That's the basic hook on Portal To Hell!!! (yes, the punctuation is part of the title) - the Toronto International Film Festival selected short film that sadly goes down as the final on screen work for the WWE star, working here with acclaimed Canadian comedy director Vivieno Caldinelli (Picnicface, This Hour Has 22 Minutes) and SFX whiz Steve Kostanski (Manborg, The Void). The apartment-superintendent hero of this primo slice of Canuxploitation has enough on his plate, what with all the plumbing and electrical problems and high-maintenance tenants. But then some jerks open up a multidimensional...

Welcome to Outrage Watch, HitFix's (almost) daily rundown of entertainment-related kerfuffles. Not anxious enough already? Get your fix of righteous indignation below, and stay posted for outrage updates throughout the week. "SNL" may be facing more than just chatter over its alleged plagiarism of a sketch aired by Canadian comedy series "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" -- it may actually be looking at a lawsuit. "I think lawyers are talking right now," "22 Minutes" writer and cast member Mark Critch -- who appeared in the Muhammad sketch in question -- told CBC's "St. John's Morning Show" during an interview Wednesday. "You can't do that," he continued. "I mean people have ripped people off before, millions of times, but this is word for word and Dhx Media — which owns own '22 Minutes' — said they want to protect their intellectual property." The "22 Minutes" sketch, which aired in January, centers on a "Win, Lose...

Saturday night, Saturday Night Live aired a sketch in which characters playing a Pictionary-like game were tasked with drawing the prophet Muhammed. By Sunday morning, the edgy-ish sketch was being universally praised. But now SNL is being accused of plagiarizing it from the satirical Canadian show This Hour Has 22 Minutes, with two of its writers calling SNL out:We have reached out to SNL and it currently does not have a comment. You can watch the sketches below. They are undoubtedly very similar. That, however, does not mean the sketch was plagiarized. SNL writers famously work on an incredible time crunch — the sort of crunch that doesn't really afford one time to search around the internet for sketches about Muhammed. Okay, it could be argued that since the 22 Minutes sketch aired months ago, an SNL writer could've seen the video, remembered it, and decided to store it up until there...

Saturday Night Live has stirred controversy, and an accusation of of copyright infringement, over a comedy skit about Prophet Muhammad that starred Reese Witherspoon and Bobby Moynihan and aired this weekend. The NBC sketch comedy show allegedly ripped off the punchline for its Picture Perfect skit from This Hour Has 22 Minutes, a Canadian sketch comedy show from indie producer Dhx Media that aired its own Prophet Muhammad game show skit in January. "While imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, Dhx Media Ltd. takes infringement of its intellectual property very seriously," Dhx Media executive chairman Michael Donovan

Even those not so thoroughly ensconced in Canadian politics know who Danny Williams is. He was the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador from 2003 to 2010, and while he may not have been the head of the most powerful province, or the richest, or the most influential, or the most culturally significant, he did make a name and a reputation for himself as its leader.
Danny, the simply titled biographical film about Williams, chronicles his pre-political life and his tenure as perhaps the most influential provincial politician in Newfoundland since the quarter-century reign of Joey Smallwood from 1949 to 1972. It’s likely that only real politicos would consider a documentary about retired politician from Canada, but there is a universality to the story that the politically ignorant might appreciate.
Stylistically, Danny doesn’t re-invent the wheel. Interviews with Williams, his family, his friends and his former staff are all inter-cut with B-roll, archival footage,...

Anything involving H.P. Lovecraft is worth a look, but when it’s a short film that stars They Live’s Roddy Piper, then you have movie magic. Director Vivieno Caldinelli and writer Matt Watts have taken to Indiegogo to ask for help getting funding for their short film, Portal to Hell.
Here’s a little bit of info on the film itself:
Jack is a simple man with simple needs. Mostly he just needs to be left alone to read his book. It’s a good book and he likes it, or at least he would if the tenants of the building he manages weren’t so damn needy themselves. And it’s not just blown fuses and clogged toilets here … no, when the building power goes out the culprit is a pair of tenants opening a portal to hell in the basement. Does this count as building maintenance? Is...

“I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass… and I’m all out of bubblegum.” John Carpenter fans remember this “Rowdy” Roddy Piper line from 1988’s They Live, but imagine if Piper said something similar to Cthulhu upon entering the demon city of R’lyeh. If this sounds epic, then you may be interested in funding Portal to Hell, a short film co-starring Piper and Cthulhu that just launched an Indiegogo campaign.
Portal to Hell is guaranteed to be made next March and contributions to the Indiegogo campaign will help fund the special effects creation. The better the film looks, the better its chances are of being turned into a feature film, as Portal to Hell’s creative team is planning on using the short film to pitch a full film version beginning next fall. With the season coming to a close on CBC darling, Murdoch Mysteries, and new hitting recently that Cracked and Arctic Air will not be returning, CBC has announced several renewals, and a few new shows.
Murdoch Mysteries and Dragon’s Den are the clear no-brainers of the situation, but we’ve got a full list, plus some pretty hot new efforts.
Schitt’s Creek will be coming your way, a show co-created by Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, who star with Catherine O’Hara, and that ought to be all you need to know about this one. Also added to the schedule is new show Strange Empire. Reportedly a very dark show, it takes place in western frontier town and follows the women who find themselves stranded when all the men suddenly disappear.

What a difference a year makes. Last year at Tiff I attended the reception for the launch of the Hollywood Suite Broadcasting by Catherine Tait, Jeff Sackman, Jay Switzer, Michael McLaughlin and David Kines. Hollywood Suite is four Canadian wide new HD channels featuring commercial free HD movies 24/7, uncut and unedited. Both Warner Bros. and MGM launched last year. One year later they are announcing that Sony Movie Channel and Axn Movies are also moving into residence on the channels (replacing Hollywood Storm and Hollywood Festival.) 450 different movies are available every month on TV on demand, online and on mobile for one low monthly fee. The cost of $4.99 per month stands in stark contrast to HBO and Showtime costs of $18 per month.
Catherine is widely known on the international circuit. She was responsible for getting the New York Independent Feature Project up to the level that it has maintained throughout the tenure of Michelle Byrd and currently by Joane Vicente, who is taking it upwards once again to new heights.
Catherine's career in the film and television business spans two decades and includes leadership in the American independent film industry as well as in film and television financing and public company management. She is President of Duopoly, an independent production company that also provides business strategy services to the film and television industry. Prior to founding Duopoly, Catherine was President and Chief Operating Officer of Salter Street Films, a publicly-traded television production & distribution company which produced hit programming such as This Hour Has 22 Minutes and Michael Moore's Bowling For Columbine. Catherine serves on the Boards of March Entertainment and Paperny Films; she is a past Director of eOne Entertainment's Canadian Board, of Aliant, of Chum Ltd, and was Chair of the Independent Feature Project in New York.

Sometimes it pains me to say when a film is an unwatchable mess. Films like French Immersion, the directorial debut of Quebec-based producer Kevin Tierney (Bon Cop, Bad Cop, The Trotsky, Good Neighbours), has an incredible amount of talent in front of the camera and behind it. It is supposed to be a comedy about the differences between English and French speaking Canada, but instead it’s a soul-sucking train wreck full of punchlines so misguided they would make Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy think twice. Sickeningly unfunny and dreadfully “Canadian,” Tierney’s film strikes out on almost every conceivable level.
There’s enough plot and quirky characters in French Immersion to sustain a year’s worth of television pilots, but Tierney tries to pack every half baked idea he has into a single film. The film deals with five English speakers forced to enter into an intense...

Canadian icon Gordon Pinsent ("Due South," "The Pillars of the Earth") appeared on CBC's sketch comedy show, "This Hour has 22 Minutes" to light up fellow Canadian and annoying hair star, Justin Bieber. The kid is of course ripe for ripping on but the impetus was specifically his self important autobiography, "First Step 2 Forever: My Story" -- from which Pinsent drolly reads.
The satire's thick as Pinsent's colossal bowtie as he selects passages that recount the 16-year old's "mythologized" first date, his love for pizza, and his "trademark swoosh." Picking on children is not normally something to be celebrated, but I make an exception in this case:...
