Ramsey Lewis, a jazz pianist and composer who had a surprise appearance on the pop charts in 1965 with the hit “The In Crowd,” died Monday at 87. No cause of death was given, but his Facebook page indicated he “died peacefully at his home in Chicago” this morning.
A three-time Grammy-winner, Lewis was also honored with a 2007 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Award.

Lewis, bassist Eldee Young and drummer Redd Holt became the classic Ramsey Lewis Trio. The group met in high school as freshmen.
Their instrumental cover of “The In Crowd,” written by Dobie Gray, was followed by two more hits, “Hang on Sloopy” and “Wade in the Water.”
Lewis was a veteran performer thanks to the numerous live music venues in his native Chicago.

Netflix will have another Christmas rom-com on deck during the holidays.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Brooke Shields and Cary Elwes will be spreading some holiday cheer from Scotland.
The duo will lead A Castle for Christmas, which follows an American author, Sophie (Shields), who makes her way to Scotland, and immediately falls in love with a castle.
Yes, really.
Unfortunately, the owner, a Scottish Duke named Myles (Elwes), does not want to sell to a foreigner.
The duo butt heads as they try to come to some sort of resolution, but they "just may find more than they bargained for."
The outlet reports Mary Lambert, who brought Pet Sematary and The In Crowd to viewers, will direct the holiday flick.
More exciting is that the movie will be filmed on location in Scotland. As a Scotsman myself, I'm excited to see which locations are used, and how the country is portrayed.

It’s finally here in all its glory, the Howard Hawks movie nobody loves. The epitome of clueless ’60s filmmaking by an auteur who left his thinking cap back with Bogie and Bacall, this show is a PC quagmire lacking the usual compensation of exploitative thrills. But hey, it has a hypnotic appeal all its own: we’ll not abandon any movie where Teri Garr dances.

The feature film debut from music-video director Geremy Jasper tells the coming-of-age tale of an overweight 23-year-old female underdog from “blue-collar New Jersey” who just happens to be a closet savant rapper. Australian actress Danielle Macdonald stars as Patricia Dombrowski, known to her friends and rivals as “Patti Cake$.”

Park City – Small town underdog looking to make it in the music business isn’t exactly the most original idea for a movie. And throwing in a hip-hop angle is familiar territory even at Sundance (see 2005’s “Hustle & Flow”). It’s a huge credit to writer and director Geremy Jasper then that “Patti Cake$,” which debuted at the 2017 edition of the festival on Monday, breaks through that familiar convention with flying colors.

Existential wranglings over the morality of murder are all very well, but some new ideas wouldn’t go amiss
The (im)morality of murder has long been a recurrent theme for Woody Allen, from his own bungling Boris anguishing about shooting Napoleon in Love and Death (“he’ll bleed on the carpet”) through Martin Landau’s Judah hiring a hitman to kill his lover in Crimes and Misdemeanors, to Jonathan Rhys Meyers’s Chris turning gunman in Match Point. This latest straight-faced offering retreads old ground. Joaquin Phoenix is the dissolute philosophy professor who makes an existential decision to commit the perfect crime, rediscovering his libido in the process. From the lazily repetitive use of the Ramsey Lewis trio’s The In Crowd to the naff student/tutor fantasies of its central relationship (Emma Stone is the besotted pupil while Parker Posey draws the short straw as a screechy academic) this is terribly pedestrian.

The world lost two famous supporting screen talents this weekend. Firstly, comedian and famed character actor Taylor Negron died at the age of 57 after a long battle with cancer. You may not recognise the name, but his deadpan delivery and complete lack of fear about tackling all sorts of topics will long be remembered.
Negron is best known for numerous bit roles in various films and TV shows including "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "The Last Boy Scout," "Easy Money," "River's Edge," "Punchline," "Angels in the Outfield," "Spy Hard," "Bio-Dome," Chairman of the Board," "The Thin Pink Line," "Stuart Little," "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas ," "The In Crowd," "Loser," "The Hughleys," "So Little Time," "Funky Monkey," "The Aristocrats," "Three Days to Vegas," "Vamps" and more.

Sandlot Heroes is enticing fans to ‘Come Back’ with the release of their new single. The three piece rock band, which hails from Allentown and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, stepped into the studio in December 2012 to write new songs and creatively evolve towards the next level. ‘Come Back’ was released today as on their label, Sandlot Heroes, LLC. ‘Come Back’ was written after Sandlot Heroes toured America with such bands as Yellowcard, We Are The In Crowd, The Wonder Years and Bowling For Soup. An Australian production house is the first local production company to have a pilot commissioned by MTV International.
The Feds has created a reality show, currently with the working title The In Crowd about people trying to break into a sub-culture or scene that they’ve always wanted to.
The pilot, shot in Sydney, will follow two people, a wannabe magician and a girl trying out on a roller derby team.
Should the pilot be picked up for a series, the shoot will go international to follow different hopefuls as they try to crack the Texan rodeo clown school, skateboarders in Los Angeles, and debutants in London.
Lisa Gray, head of content for The Feds told Encore: “We’re really enjoying this show and its the type of programming we’d like to work on in the future. Making it for a global audience is exciting. Hopefully it means more opportunities like this.

I’m going to start this review with an apology, because it is impossible to write about a female-fronted pop-punk band without mentioning Paramore. This is usually an unfair comparison, hence the apology, and Sydney based pop-punkers Tonight Alive aren’t just an Australian Paramore. What Are You So Scared Of? sees them trying to break the UK and America, having already sold upwards of 20,000 copies of the album in their home country. With production duties being handled by Mark Trombino (producer of legendary pop-punk albums such as Blink 182’s Dude Ranch and Jimmy Eat World’s Bleed American) and 45 minutes of solid tracks, hopefully some of their success down under will be repeated over here.
Opening with the instrumental and atmospheric Eject, Eject, Eject! gives second track Breaking & Entering some extra impact, as well as giving the guitarists a chance to remind listeners that this band isn’t...

Nashville, Tenn. (AP) — Dobie Gray was more than a smooth balladeer who recorded the timeless hit "Drift Away" in 1973. He wrote songs for an array of country and pop performers, was a trailblazing entertainer in South Africa and, in death, a philanthropist. Gray died in his sleep at his Nashville home Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 69. "Drift Away" also was recorded by rap artist Uncle Kracker in 2003 and became a hit again. Gray's silky tenor also was heard on other hits including "The In Crowd" in 1965 and "Loving...

The fine folks running The Asylum have done it again. Purveyor of mockbusters and Syfy mega-features such as Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, Mega Piranha and, of course, Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus, The Asylum has now delivered unto us Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, and it's safe to say that this low-budget delight delivers everything you might desire from a film bearing such a title.
Although the flick's big battle is ostensibly between the titular creatures, in truth the main event features '80s pop tarts Tiffany and Debbie Gibson playing strong women at odds who, by movie's end, are united in more ways than one by a common mega-enemy.
Gibson stars as Nikki, a fervent animal rights activist whose zeal borders on the sociopathic. Tiffany plays Terry, a park ranger whose beat is the Florida Everglades.

Gatoroid. After tons of both mainstream and fan press over the wacky project’s announcement, Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid will premiere on Saturday, January 29 at 9 p.m. The Syfy original movie spawned from The Asylum, makers of such low-rent fare as Mega Piranha and Mega Shark Vs. Recently he was announced for a role in The Abstinence Teacher with Sandra Bullock and the DreamWorks comedy Raised by Wolfs and now he has another project on his slate. Variety reports Warner Bros. is developing A Boyfriend for My Wife, a remake of a 2008 romantic comedy from Argentina, and Carell is lined-up to lead the film. Sadly, writers Mark Gibson and Phil Halprin (Snow Dogs, The In Crowd) don't inspire much hope for this. Apparently the original film, directed by Juan Taratuto was one of the biggest movies in Argentina ...
