"A mixtape is a message from the maker to the listener." That is indeed an accurate description. Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a nostalgic dramedy film titled Mixtape, the latest from filmmaker Valerie Weiss. As the world approaches Y2K, a quirky 12-year-old sets out on a journey to find songs on a mixtape made by her late parents. When a young girl accidentally destroys the mixtape that belonged to her mother, she sets out to track down each of the obscure songs on the cassette. The film stars Gemma Brooke Allen as Beverly, with Audrey Hsieh, Olga Petsa, Jackson Rathbone, plus Nick Thune and Julie Bowen. As cute as this looks, it's pretty much like hitting gold in the nostalgia mine - combining late 90s nostalgia with cassette-tape nostalgia all in one! There's also toppings of Napster nostalgia and vinyl nostalgia, too. It does look like ...

Craig Keller and Uncas Blythe continue our series of film dialogues. Isiah Medina's 88:88 is having its exclusive online premiere at Mubi, playing through April 17, 2016.Craig Keller: We're going to talk about Isiah Medina's 66-minute film from 2015, 88:88. It's a challenging movie: polyphonic, polypictorial, but not confrontational, in fact pretty chilled-out; if it were featured on Top Gear the hosts might praise its speed, dynamic facility, and stability of suspension. 88:88 presents Medina himself and a group of friends or characters from university in and around the neighborhoods of Winnipeg. Now I'll refrain from synopsizing any more. I had a hard time with the film, but like any complicated work revisitations in whole and in part yield stronger comprehension; accordingly, new insights rise to the surface. Going back through it again the other day I started by watching only the first ten minutes, which provide an overture,...

Cry Havoc #1 (Image): If you’ve ever read a comic by Simon Spurrier, you know basically what to expect: dissection of mythology and its meaning, sharp-tongued British colloqualisms, and a happy dash of absurdity. That said, Cry Havoc is different from his usual fare; it comes off as deadly serious, for one thing, and the jokes cracked are surrounded by intense monologues about the cannibalistic habits of hyenas and pre-emptive strike warfare. Heavy stuff for a werewolf book—except it’s not really a werewolf book in the traditional sense. There are no nighttime killing sprees, and Louise doesn’t wake up every morning with blood under her fingernails. This is partially because the story is told in three separate timelines and with three separate colorists for artist Ryan Kelly, whose attention to detail and paneling style makes Lou’s journey easy to follow despite its narrative complexity. Stick around...

What scares Stephen King? “Losing control. Also spiders, bats and things that get stuck in your hair.”
The author sat down with the hosts of CBS This Morning to discuss his upcoming movie, Stephen King’S A Good Marriage, his novels and his thoughts on Halloween.
In Theaters and OnDemand on October 3rd, you wont want to miss this edge-of-your seat thriller. It’s creepy, it’s suspenseful, and most importantly, it’s the return of actress Joan Allen on the big screen.
When her husband (Anthony Lapaglia) of more than twenty years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson (Joan Allen) looks for batteries in the garage. Instead she discovers the stranger inside her husband. It’s a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends a good marriage.

We’re getting closer and closer to the release of Iron Man 3, and I am freaking stoked. Iron Man is one of my favorite comic characters, and Robert Downey, Jr. has done such an incredible job of bringing Tony Stark to life on the big screen. From Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and The Avengers, these movies have shown that they really understand the character and are doing their hardest to make the best possible adaptation of old Shellhead. And now, after Iron Man set the bar and The Avengers raised it, Iron Man 3 looks poised to take things to the next level.
The trailers so far have shown us that director Shane Black is mining a whole lot of stories from the comics in order to put this film together. Already, we know that Iron Man 3 borrows elements from the Extremis story-arc, that it introduces the...

Revenge, Season 2, Episode 15: “Retribution”
Written by Nikki Toscano and Elle Triedman
Directed by Helen Hunt
Airs Sundays at 9 pm (Et) on ABC
It’s no secret that Revenge had lost its way earlier this season but with Amanda’s death at the end of the last episode, Emily’s desire to destroy the Graysons has been renewed and so has the show.
The Graysons are scrambling and in a panic trying to get out from under the Initiative, which is an interesting position to see them in, but it’s obvious that the Initiative storyline is winding down. Hopefully Emily’s new motivation for revenge will put the show back on track.
When Emily tells Victoria, “You must feel so helpless” early in the episode, it is an obvious taunt and even a promise. Losing control is Victoria’s greatest fear, but losing control of her children is even scarier.

Did you like the music that featured on the extended Cloud Atlas trailer? Well, if the answer is yes, then you’re in for a treat as “Outro” artists M83 have written the whole soundtrack to Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming sci-fi thriller Oblivion.
From what we can tell from this first taste of the score, M83, with the help of composer Joseph Trapanese (Tron: Legacy, The Raid), have produced a hefty, orchestral soundtrack which, from looking at the track titles, will blend seamlessly into the film’s storyline.
The first track to be released for our listening pleasure is entitled “StarWaves” and comes to us via Rolling Stone and below that you can find the complete tracklisting for the score, helpfully supplied by The Playlist.

What the – you mean he’s actually dead? Well that’s not completely without precedent on The Vampire Diaries, but dead and not coming back? I’m still not entirely convinced, but this show is pretty liberal with dealing out the death card, so I suppose… It’s still shocking, but how great that the show continues to take risks and continues to develop Elena’s character this season is making this the best season ever.

The Oscars are almost upon us, and the past few weeks have treated us to the shortlists competing in a number of categories, including Best Animated Feature, Best Visual Effects, Best Documentary, and Best Original Score.
With the nominations announcement creeping ever closer at the start of next month, the Academy have now announced a seventy-five-long list of songs that are eligible in the Best Original Song category.
The list features some absolutely stellar songs that have debuted on the big screen this year, including Adele’s impressive Bond theme, Skyfall.
Tom Hooper’s highly anticipated Les Misérables is also in the running with Suddenly, composed specifically for the film, and it should be great to see how it’s received both by audiences and the Academy in the coming weeks.

There are 75 original songs that qualify for the Oscar this year, but really everyone has been waiting to hear about one.
Adele’s title theme to Skyfall surged to #1 on iTunes just days after debuting in October, but some feared the number by her and Paul Epworth would be ruled ineligible for the Oscar because it incorporates elements of the classic 007 theme, which of course is not original.
But the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided it was not a significant enough problem to boot it from the potential nominees, and included it without...

I mentioned on today's podcast that my three nominees for Best Original Song for the 2013 Critics' Choice Awards were "100 Black Coffins" from Django Unchained, "Skyfall" from Skyfall and "Ladies of Tampa" from Magic Mike. Of my nominees only "Skyfall" made the official list of nominees, but hopefully the Academy will right a couple of wrongs as both "100 Black Coffins" and Matthew McConaughey's "Ladies of Tampa" are among the 75 songs listed as in contention for a nomination at the 2013 Oscars. The Academy just released the following list of which all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips. Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category.
