It's technically a sequel. Though initially marketed as a remake, the character in the film, played by Samuel L. Jackson, is John Shaft Jr. and he is supposedly related to the original Shaft, played by Richard Roundtree in the 1971 original film. So it is a sequel. Samuel L. Jackson often referred to it as an "update" while promoting the film.
Yes. The sequel is Shaft (2019), in which both Samuel L. Jackson and Richard Roundtree reprise their roles.
So far, 5. First there was Shaft (1971), and it spawned two sequels; Shaft's Big Score! (1972), and Shaft in Africa (1973). This was followed by this film in 2000, which spawned another sequel; Shaft (2019). There was also a short-lived, 7 episode TV series, Shaft (1973), also starring Richard Roundtree.
