Katherine Propper makes her directorial debut with Lost Soulz, an intimate look at ambitious youth chasing artistic passion on the open road. The film follows aspiring rapper Sol, portrayed with charisma by musician Sauve Sidle, as he joins a collective of touring musicians after a chance meeting. Sol leaves his Texas home with little reflection, prompted by a spur-of-the-moment invitation to perform alongside the group across the Lone Star state.
Propper chooses to focus more on character than a complex plot. We learn about Sol and his new companions through everyday moments—late-night jam sessions in their packed van, impromptu music videos at tourist spots, unbridled enthusiasm at every opportunity to create. Central is Sol’s desire for fame and longing to prove himself, embodied in his assurance to his mirror, “You’re going to be a superstar.” Yet, like many ambitious dreams, reality brings uncertainty. Sol starts to feel...

This past May, we gave Daily Dead readers exclusive first deatils on Summer Shadows, the upcoming horror comic book mini-series that's billed as an "Lgbtqia+ romance turned deadly mystery." With the first issue coming out in September, I had a chance to catch up with John Harris Dunning, who talks about the origins of the series, working with Ricardo Cabral, and more!
I understand that the inspiration for the story's setting is based on your own summer trips to a Greek Island. Why did you feel this setting was perfect for a vampire story?
John Harris Dunning: I’ve been regularly visiting Greece for a decade now, so it’s like a second home to me. There’s a very strong tradition of vampires or vrykolakas there. Widespread reports of these undead creatures persisted as recently as during the Second World War. Then there’s the Greek fascination with the idea of eternal beauty,...

There were red flowerpot hats on each of the seats. The “Energy Domes,” as they used to call them, were Devo’s headgear of choice during the early 1980s, back when the band went from extremely bizarre, unclassifiable group to extremely bizarre, slightly more classifiable (postpunk, New Wave, geek rock) group who’d somehow turn a single entitled “Whip It” into a massive hit. No one told the Sundance Film Festival audience to put them on before the premiere of Devo, Chris Smith’s documentary on the pride of Akron,...

Since 1986 Mexico’s Guadalajara International Film Festival (Ficg) has been one of the premiere North American stops along the global festival circuit, showcasing some of the most exciting and innovative work emerging from Latin America and beyond. But we’re not here today to talk about that festival, actually. No. Today we’re here to talk about the GuadaLAjara Film Festival, Ficg’s satellite showcase in Dtla, which kicks off its 2023 edition November 1–the perfect cure for your post-Halloween hangover.

Son Mike W. Beasley writes on Facebook, “Man…you know this is a part of life…but that doesn’t make it any easier. I lost my best friend today. Flatbush Zombies’ Meechy Darko has teamed up with Freddie Gibbs and DJ/producer A-Trak for a new song, “On God,” off his upcoming solo debut, Gothic Luxury.
Produced by Jay Versace and Dot Da Genius, “On God” begins with a grandiose flourish but settles into a groove that’s still propulsive, but also subtle and unsettling in its own ways. Meechy Darko and Freddie Gibbs trade sprawling, heavy, and brutally honest verses on the five-minute track, while A-Trak arrives at the end to show off his signature scratching skills.

I don't think he would have minded that I shared this with you guys," Jada said in an Instagram video. She then read the poem aloud, adding that she believes the poem was the "original concept" for Tupac's song "Lost Souls." "As we prepare to celebrate his legacy ... let's remember him for that which we loved most ... his way with words," Jada captioned the video. "Here are a few you may have never heard before." Jada Pinkett Smith shared what she believes to be a previously unreleased Tupac poem to mark what would have been the late rapper’s 50th birthday, June 16th (although Smith admittedly got a headstart and posted the poem on Instagram on June 15th).

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from the score for Those Who Wish Me Dead, composed by Brian Tyler.
WaterTower Music will release the full 17-track soundtrack for the New Line thriller, starring Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, on May 7.
Directed by Oscar-nominated writer-director Taylor Sheridan, the film centers on Hannah (Jolie), a smokejumper still reeling from the loss of three lives she failed to save from a fire, when she comes across Connor (Finn Little), a traumatized 12-year-old boy with nowhere else to turn.
A multiple Emmy and BAFTA Award nominee, who has served as a composer and conductor on more than 70 feature films, Tyler boarded the project after collaborating with Sheridan on his acclaimed Paramount Network drama, Yellowstone.
Sheridan turned to Tyler, given his ability to tap into both intense action and genuine emotion through his music.

Another episode, another missed opportunity to save Kara in both worlds.
The Super Friends' Phantom problem grew so far out of control on Supergirl Season 6 Episode 4 that they needed to focus all of their efforts on stopping it. And a betrayal in the Phantom Zone lead to Kara destroying her only way home.
The hour was mostly filler, which is a bit disappointing for a final season. However, it was still more intriguing than past episodes as it had great action and well-crafted character moments.
Plus, it was the first time Lex Luthor wasn't featured, which is always a win in my book.
The Phantom Zone really hasn't been paid its dues on Supergirl Season 6, until "Lost Souls."
The season's story, so far, has mostly taken place in National City with the Super Friends trying to save Kara from their end.

Supergirl Season 6 Episode 4
To vanquish the Phantoms and escape the Phantom Zone, Supergirl motions toward horror with its body-snatching plot in National City and eerie quest over in the Phantom Zone. With the Prime Phantom still terrorizing National City and Kara and her father still trapped, the Super Friends had their hands full while still trying to come to terms with the emotional aspect of losing Kara, mostly by consuming Scotch or doughnuts.
In an early bout with phantoms, a seemingly defeated phantom coming from lying on the ground to standing up in one smooth movement was a particularly cool genre moment for the usually-light Supergirl. The final showdown with the mini-Phantom Zone on Earth has more horror beats, like when Brainy is taken and he claws his way from the shadows – his red eyes a sign he’s been...

While moviegoers cope with being shut indoors, HBO Max has a film that could have you feeling even more stir-crazy. “Locked Down” sequesters audiences for nearly two hours with an unhappy couple (played by Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor), who vent for a time, before hatching a plan to steal a huge diamond from Harrods. While hardly the antidote for confinement, it’s a creative response to the limitations Covid has placed on the world — which extends to how the film was shot, with big names like Ben Stiller and Ben Kingsley supplying cameos via Zoom.
With plenty of indoor time ahead on this long holiday weekend, why not fill it with a new movie or two? Amazon has timed the Prime Video release of Regina King’s acclaimed “One Night in Miami…” to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The film — which imagines a 1964 reunion of old friends Cassius Clay,...

As a cinematographer, if you spend the bulk of your career shooting classy big-budget productions for Hollywood heavyweights, it’s conceivable that you might occasionally get a B-movie hankering: Even gourmet chefs crave the sloppy pleasures of a Big Mac now and then. Janusz Kaminski gets the urge rarely, it seems, but when it strikes, he takes to the director’s chair. Back in 2000, Steven Spielberg’s trusty Dp made an ignominious helming debut with “Lost Souls,” an incoherent occult horror that wasn’t even the tasty kind of trash. Two decades later, things haven’t overly improved with “American Dream,” the noble-sounding title of which does little to dignify the dingy exploitation exercise lurking below: a thriller in which the American pursuit of happiness is no match for the dogged chase given by ticked-off Russian mobsters.
The relative novelty of Kaminski’s attachment in this capacity superficially distinguishes “American...

Vikings Season 6 Episode 15
“I have other ambitions, unfinished business.”
Vikings continues to deftly interweave the multiple story threads that have long been a staple of the series, and whether these connections are driven by characters, action, or visuals, they provide a deeper layer of meaning within this elaborate saga. From the images of Katia and Gunnhild wearing all white to the emotionally disturbed actions of Kjetill Flatnose and Prince Oleg, “All At Sea” maintains these exquisitely subtle narrative touches as one set of conflicts are put to rest and new ones begin to brew.
The natural inclination may be to overlook the significance of Ivar’s time in Kiev since the only tangible result lies in Prince Igor’s escape from his uncle Oleg. Ivar aspires to greatness and seeks to once again rule Kattegat, but he clearly needs to change his approach if he...

Vikings Season 6 Episode 14
“We should never forget our past. Ever.”
Perhaps Gunnhild says it best when she confides in her dead husband Bjorn that “the time for great heroes is over,” a statement that speaks to the loss of direction so many of the characters now experience as the Viking age reaches a crossroads. “Lost Souls” journeys through a complicated tangle of feelings that focus on the leadership vacuums a new world order sets into motion. Despite all of the upheaval, Vikings continues its string of solid episodes and deftly previews the impending battles in Rus and on the land settled by Ubbe and the Icelanders.

Soon after season 3 of FX’s Fargo ended, Noah Hawley made it sound like the Emmy-winning series was done and over at the Atx festival. Those were comments that he quickly walked back, and here we are with a Chris Rock-starring season 4 set to air on Sept. 27 across 11 episodes.
And as far as season 5 goes, Hawley told us at FX’s press day today, “I’m certainly not ruling it out.”
“It’s not just one idea you need, it’s a hundred ideas and characters,” added the creator, but providing no teaser on what’s next, “so that tends to percolate.”
Also, in regard to what’s next for Hawley, his answer is the same as it was at TCA earlier this year: “I have a novel, I’m trying to finish, it’s not my goal to race back into production.”

Shaft’s Big Score! / Shaft in Africa
Blu ray
Warner Archive
1972, 1973 / 2.35 : 1 / 104, 112 Min.
Starring Richard Roundtree, Vonetta McGee, Frank Finley
Directed by Gordon Parks, John Guillermin
Released in 1971 during a notoriously divisive presidential campaign, Shaft was both a middle finger to the powers that be and a sexually charged Black Power taunt – a combination that convulsed 42nd Street audiences while scaring the bejesus out of your average Nixon voter.
For that grindhouse crowd, Richard Roundtree, not Nixon, was The One and his portrayal of the street-smart detective reached far beyond The Deuce – director Gordon Parks’ film cost only $500,000 but brought in 13 million at the box office. Sequels were just around the corner.
A year later Shaft’s Big Score! reunited Parks, Roundtree and screenwriter Ernest Tidyman while quadrupling the budget in the bargain – the streets are still mean but the volatile mood swings that made the 1971 film a cultural touchstone...

They will team for Lost Souls, a feature they’ve just set at Fox Searchlight, and Why Visit America, an FX pilot they’ll develop with Baker writing it, marking the first time he’s done that. Who wouldn't want to take a stroll through Paris? Even if that meant having to spend the day with Jonathan, you could still sign me right up!
Clary's misadventures with her demonic brother took her to the City of Lights on Shadowhunters Season 3 Episode 12.
Paris was Jonathan's way of trying to win over his sister, but her dream destination couldn't hide his evilness. That dark side could only be suppressed for so long before it lashed out. And it provided us with a new mystery to solve.
Firstly, similar to Shadowhunters Season 3 Episode 11, "Original Sin" captured such beauty with its editing effects and choice of scenery.
Historical architecture, chic fashion, and sublime French music highlighted the romantic quality of Paris. Shadowhunters had the chance to travel to this gorgeous city, and they made the most of it with every second they could.
It makes me want to book a summer trip to Paris right now!

The reluctant beginning of the end is here, Shadowhunters fans. As much as we don't want to say goodbye, it's great to finally see our favorites on the screen again!
Like the characters on Shadowhunters Season 3 Episode 11, we picked up right where we left off: Clary's death. And just like the news of Shadowhunters' cancellation, the reality is heartbreaking and filled with plenty of emotions.
The group isn't ready to say goodbye to Clary, and neither are we. Luckily, Clary isn't giving up yet, especially in this thrilling season premiere.
"Lost Souls" highlighted why Shadowhunters is a captivatingly intense and amazing show: the quality keeps getting better and better with each new half-season.
Just think about where we all started during Shadowhunters Season 1.

Her new Ep – the first release since she revealed herself at June’s Bet Awards – opens with a bit of a gauntlet-throw: “Lost Souls,” a broadside against celebrity’s illusions, borrows from Lauryn Hill’s “Lost Ones” and features H.E.R. The Academy Awards shortlist for Best Original Song contains 70 different tunes, which a pedant might say isn’t very short at all. Frontrunners have emerged, like “Remember Me” from the “Coco” soundtrack and Sufjan Stevens’ two contributions to “Call Me by Your Name,” but there’s a variety that may not be reflected when the five nominees are announced January 23. Until then, avail yourself of this playlist.

First wave titles include the anticipated Housewife from Turkish director Can Evrenol (Baskin), the horror-comedy Tragedy Girls, Mexican horror anthology Mexico Barbaro II and a little Protuguese slasher flick that I liked The Forest of Lost Souls. Broadway’s delightful — but wickedly accurate — satire of big business was brought to movie screens almost intact, with the story, the stars, the styles and dances kept as they were in the long-running show that won a Pulitzer Prize. This is the place to see Robert Morse and Michele Lee at their best — it’s one of the best, and least appreciated movie musicals of the 1960s.

Yesterday, amid a crush of sweaty people desperate for last-minute props, I visited a local Halloween superstore with my daughter, looking for a Pikachu mask. Well, there wasn’t much to choose from in the Cute Kid Division. But this particular hall of Halloween hell definitely had the adult sensibility covered. Of course there were the usual skimpy or otherwise outrageous costumes for purchase —ladies, you can dress up like a sexy Kim Kardashian-esque vampire out for a night of Hollywood clubbing, and gents, how about impressing all the sexy Kim Kardashian vampires at your party by dressing up like a walking, talking matched set of cock and balls! It’s been a while since I’ve shopped for fake tools of terror, but it seems there’s been a real advance in sophistication in the market for “Leatherface-approved” (I swear) chainsaws with moving parts and authentic revving noises,...

It’s October. The leaves are turning brown and the nights are drawing in. It’s cold and it’s raining and it’s Halloween. The perfect time, then, to curl up with a good book and give yourself the creeps. But which book?
You could go for one of the classics – Dracula or Frankenstein or something by Lovecraft or Poe – or you could go with the zeitgeist and pick up Stephen King’s Cell, or even The Shining, if you haven't read it already. Any of those would be perfectly good choices. But let’s face it, if you were gonna read one of those, you wouldn’t need me to recommend them.

The fans that have stuck to the new Doom reboot online have asked for the return of one thing, deathmatch. Finally we get it!
Doom update #3 finally hit the game earlier and it comes entirely free. It works as a "patch" to the title, but with it comes additional content for all fans. This new content includes free-for-all deathmatch, and the addition of private lobbies.
In free-for-all deathmatch demon runes have been disabled, but all characteristics of the game elsewhere are still there. For private lobbies you can now create a game, invite friends, and then mess with the settings. One of the settings is the ability to disable demon runes in all modes.
To celebrate the patch the game is hosting double Xp weekend which started earlier this morning and lasts through Sunday.
The rest of the update is basically patch notes for the single player portion of the game and Snap-Map.

Wondering how all the DC universe TV spin-offs, crossovers and webseries fit together? We have the answer...
In October 2012, Us network The CW launched the first season of Arrow, after wrapping up no fewer than ten seasons of Superman origin show Smallville a year before. Arrow was a completely new take on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, in a new universe that had nothing to do with Smallville or its version of Oliver Queen/Green Arrow. The series proved quite the hit for The CW, and a second season renewal inevitably followed. In season two, we were introduced to forensic scientist Barry Allen, better known to DC Comics readers as The Flash. Arrow got a third season, The Flash got his own TV show with great success, and the live action shared DC Comics universe on TV was born. And with it the question: how does it all fit together?...
