The new book Disney High gives a dark look at what once was a bright time for the Disney Channel!
Before the 2000s, the Disney Channel was an interesting network. Obviously, the focus was on Disney shows, yet it showed more original fare and specials, and the nighttime programming was more skewed toward adult viewers than just the kids. There were bits like a new Mickey Mouse Club that introduced future stars like Ryan Gosling, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and others, yet Disney didn't go for the "Tween" market.
That all changed in the 2000s with a focus on shows targeted at that trend, mostly comedies. It transformed the Disney Channel forever while launching the careers of scores of stars like Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Zac Efron, the Jonas Brothers, and many more. It still continues with new shows as Disney made these teen stars huge.

When I was 9 years old, I was obsessed with the Disney Channel monster-of-the-week series, "So Weird." The show centered on a strong-willed teenage girl named Fiona "Fi" Phillips (Cara DeLizia) who used the power of information gathered from online research to help make sense of ghosts, monsters, folk legends, and other supernatural occurrences that seemed to follow her and her rockstar mom while they traveled the country on her comeback tour.
I wasn't yet a teenager and I certainly didn't own a laptop, but I could feel deep in my bones that I was just like Fi Phillips, and often fantasized what it would be like to live her life. Sometimes, the wind would blow a little too strong as I walked home from school or I'd hear a disembodied voice that was probably the result of my own imagination, and the line between my favorite TV show and my own life would blur.

The arc of the "Star Trek" films released from 2009 to 2016 is an odd one. In 2009, J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" rebooted the film series in a new timeline, depicting a brand new cast of younger actors playing the "Star Trek" characters we all knew and loved but altered thanks to a causality/time travel conceit. That film was a massive hit, repurposing "Star Trek" into a slick, sexy action franchise. Long gone were the days of philosophical intellectualizing and tales of diplomacy. Thousands of nerdy conversations immediately began as to what constituted the "real" version of "Star Trek" and what didn't.
Abrams followed his film in 2012 with "Star Trek Into Darkness," a film that repurposed the character of Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch) previously seen in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." That film was also a hit but is generally not as liked as the 2009 film.

"Why aren't you more famous?" It's one question independent singer-songwriter and actor Alexz Johnson gets too often. "[That question is] very sweet, and it's obviously coming from a really beautiful place, but what's behind that is, 'You should be more of a success,'" the 36-year-old mother of two tells Popsugar. From 2010 until now, Johnson has released five studio albums independently. Her latest, "Seasons," came out on April 7.
For an artist with a résumé as impressive as Johnson's, it's somewhat natural to wonder why her powerhouse voice isn't dominating the airwaves. But Johnson is right where she wants to be as an artist, and she's aiming to redefine what success looks like with her new album.
"When I started the process of doing 'Seasons,' I was pregnant with my son and it was Covid still . . . I was like, 'You know what? I'm going to do a record from home.

Teen dramas aren't just for teens anymore. In 2022, "Euphoria" became HBO's second most-watched series ever, and season 3 of Mindy Kaling's comedy-drama "Never Have I Ever" continued to attract a massive audience of viewers of all ages. The genre simply continues to expand, to the delight of its many fans.
Perhaps teen dramas persist because becoming an adult is a universally complex stage of life. In her book "Teen TV," Dr. Stefania Marghitu writes, "Certain narrative elements present themselves in nearly every teen series: the protagonist feels alienated from the adolescent world she is on the threshold of entering. This conflict is intertwined with a passionate story of first love and new discoveries during the transition from child to adult." Even for viewers who are no longer teens, the thrills, pains, and misunderstandings of youth aren't too difficult to remember.

Fans of people cheating death and Rube Goldberg machines get ready because we're eatin' goooooood tonight! Earlier today it was announced that the "Final Destination" franchise was getting a new installment, with the directors of 2018's "Freaks," Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky, tapped to bring "Final Destination 6" to life.
The directing duo has a fascinating background, having co-directed the live-action "Kim Possible" movie for Disney Channel, with Lipovsky directing "Dead Rising: Watchtower" and "Leprechaun: Origins." The Disney connection seems weird until you realize Lipovsky got his start as a kid actor in plenty of family-friendly horror fare like "Goosebumps" and Disney's "So Weird," while also appearing in "Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century" (which is extremely exciting news for me and like ... six other people on the planet). Regardless, the two made something really special with the sci-fi horror film "Freaks," which put them on the radar of the New Line...

Let’s face it: ’90s kid shows are some of the best out there. And Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, and Cartoon Network dominated the genre. The Ren & Stimpy Show, Gargoyles, Doug, Kenan & Kel, All That, So Weird — the list of shows that defined millennial childhoods and humor goes on and on. The rise of digital news media, internet memes, and most recently (and most importantly) streaming services have allowed millennials to bask in the nostalgia of their favorite ’90s shows. (It also doesn’t hurt that many of them are either getting reboots or have been rebooted already.) Now, we want to know which shows from Disney Channel and Nickelodeon you remember best. In our “Are You a ’90s Disney or Nick Kid?” quiz, below, we compiled short, slightly misleading descriptions of shows that aired on Disney Channel and Nickelodeon in the 1990s. Can you accurately guess which one we’re...

Longtime character actor Ernie Lively, whose acting career spanned five decades and included roles in such films as “Turner & Hooch,” “Passenger 57” and the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” films, in which he played the father of his daughter Blake Lively’s character, has died, according to a representative for Lively. He was 74.
Lively died of cardiac complications in Los Angeles last Thursday. He was surrounded by his wife and all of his children.
Lively was also a successful pitchman as he starred alongside Phil McHale as part of the duo Runner & Ernie in the popular Hardee’s commercials that ran in the late 1970s and early ’80s.
Lively was born Ernest Brown Jr. in Baltimore on Jan. 29, 1947. Lively was an English professor who served in the Marines during the Vietnam War and turned to acting. On top of acting, Lively was an acting coach and mentor who guided...

Hollywood is back to work, and if further proof was needed to show just how different set life is these days with Covid-19 protocols, a paparazzo captured Chris Evans sticking a long nasal swab up his nose Dec. 10 upon arriving on the set of Adam McKay’s Netflix film Don’t Look Up. While it may seem atypical to see a major Marvel movie star self-administering a rapid test, it was just another sign that filming these days is exactly that — not normal.

It’s a relatively contained secret that beneath the magic and the pixie dust, Disney has produced a whole lot of freaky stuff. And now that the House of Mouse has officially launched its expansive streaming site, Disney Plus, a large collection of that spooky material is available to cower over wherever and whenever you want!
Of course, this isn’t to say that there are blood fests on there – the company couldn’t even summon up the courage to include the R-rated Deadpool and Logan films – but rather point out that some of the studio’s most iconic features incorporate incredibly frightening scenes.
While the Mouse House has evidently filtered some of its more controversial content for Disney Plus – though they seem to have completely missed Dumbo‘s iconically problematic crows – Bloody Disgusting was still able to conjure up a video of some of the freakiest stuff to explore on the streaming service.

Litchfield Og Barb Denning should look very familiar - no matter what generation you're a part of. Mackenzie Phillips, who plays Orange Is the New Black's latest jailbird to rock the cage in Max, has been on the scene since her debut role as Carol in 1973's American Graffiti. She was only 12 when she landed the part and hasn't stopped acting since.
Phillips has an extensive résumé. After her breakout film role, she appeared in guest capacities on shows like The Love Boat and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Her most iconic role, however, came when she landed the part of Julie Cooper on One Day at a Time in 1975, a part she held until 1983. She later went on to appear as a different character in the Netflix reboot of One Day at a Time, which premiered in 2017.

I know a lot of fans are wondering what scenes from Justice League were written and directed by Joss Whedon. We know all the Superman scenes where we see him with the CGI upper lip were done by Whedon. Now we know that the opening scene involving Batman capturing a burglar to lure out a Parademon was Whedon's doing as well.
The big reveal comes from actor Holt McCallany, who played the burglar. He explains in an interview with Comic Book that the opening scene was originally supposed to be more comedic. In fact, Whedon originally shot the scene they way he intended it to play out, but then Warner Bros. stepped in and had him change it up. That's kind of weird because the whole reason the studio wanted Joss Whedon on board was to lighten things up! Then he does that and they tell him to make it darker again.

Watch the “Maybe She’s Not Such a Heinous Bitch After All” on mute, and it looks like one of the happiest things “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” has ever done. But as with the rest of the musical sequences on the show, there’s always more behind what Rebecca Bunch tells herself.
There’s Rebecca (Rachel Bloom), just off one of the lowest points in her life, finally being Ok with moving back home and living with her mom Naomi (Tovah Feldshuh). As she starts to accept Naomi’s sudden change in attitude, complete with homemade milkshakes and TV-watching cuddle sessions, her thoughts take the form of a Ronettes-style, Wall of Sound tribute. Singing the song takes her from Naomi’s living room, straight through to a black-and-white TV performance, with a pair of backup singers for good measure.

Mubi is partnering with the New York Film Festival to present highlights from Projections, a festival program of film and video work that expands upon our notions of what the moving image can do and be. James N. Kienitz Wilkin's Indefinite Pitch (2016), recipient of the festival's Kazuko Trust Award, is showing on Mubi in many countries around the world from October 18 - November 16, 2016.I’ve come to the conclusion that movies always communicate the circumstances in which they were made, and most of the time, these circumstances are unconscious influences. If one identifies with movies, or has dedicated one’s life to, or expects to make a living from, movies, then circumstantially, one's personal ambitions, dreams and memories get riskily exposed. Indefinite Pitch tries to pinpoint this. But not everything can be pinned down. In music, not all instruments make notes with a clear pitch. The rising and falling background...

For anyone who thought that Elliot inherited all of the unhinged genes in the Alderson family, well... Mr. Robot Season 2 Episode 8 certainly cleared that misconception right up for you.
Darlene has been spiraling all season, in Elliot's absence, and "Successor" displayed the apex of that spiraling: cold-blooded murder.
The show has done a great, subtle job of hinting at Darlene slowly losing it since the very beginning of Mr. Robot Season 2.
In my review of Mr. Robot Season 2 Episode 3, I specifically wondered whether Darlene might be capable of murdering Mrs. Romero, given her reaction to Mobley saying that Mrs. Romero saw him at the house shortly before her son was found dead. In retrospect, that's some great foreshadowing and a wonderfully subtle performance on Carly Chaikin's part.
I was a little bit disappointed that Darlene's victim was such a random character. Susan Jacobs' importance always felt like a bit of a retcon,...

Is this truly the end?
The title card reading "The End" would seem to indicate without a doubt that, yes, the two part finale event comprised of Penny Dreadful Season 3 Episode 8 and Penny Dreadful Season 3 Episode 9 was actually the series finale.
As disappointing and downright traumatizing as that would be, I have to admit that these two hours did nicely tie up nearly every plot point in the series. It felt very series finale-ish.

First, the elephant in the room (review) – Vanessa died. Voluntarily. At Ethan's hand. It was heartbreaking and tear-jerking, but ultimately, it made sense.
We'd already seen Vanessa reckon with what she was. We'd already seen her come to terms with the fact that she could never be a "normal" woman. Nor did she want to be, any longer.

#JenniferAniston doesn't seem to like #KateBeckinsale's dress?? #CritcsChoiceAwards Wtf pic.twitter.com/qqrcke8mGh— Ethan Van Sciver (@EthanVanSciver) January 18, 2016 As Kate Beckinsale prepared to present at the Critics' Choice Awards, the audience camera caught Jennifer Aniston's very strange reaction to seeing the Underworld actress walk across the stage. Jennifer noticeably gasps when she sees Kate, appears to say "watch out," and, after calming down, mumbles "okay" to herself. So weird! Was she worried Kate was about to pull a Jennifer Lawrence and trip on her gorgeous, floor-length silver gown?! Whatever the reason may be, Jen's face is a must see. Check it out above, and see her other hilarious candid moment from Sunday night.

Oops. The Hateful Eight writer-director Quentin Tarantino made a major flub when he took to the stage to accept the Golden Globe for Best Original Score on behalf of the film's composer, Ennio Morricone. The director said Morricone had "never won an award for any one individual movie at a U.S. awards show" - but as many film buffs were quick to point out on Twitter, Tarantino was wrong. The acclaimed composer has in fact won two Golden Globes, one for The Mission in 1987, and one for The Legend of 1900 in 2000. Although Morricone has never won an Academy Award for a specific movie,...

The Theatre at the Ace Hotel is no stranger to star-studded live reads. A short 20 months ago, it played host to what, at the time, seemed like would be the only public performance of the recently leaked script of "The Hateful Eight." On Wednesday night, that same downtown Los Angeles location was the venue for another Quentin Tarantino creation, as Jason Reitman and Film Independent assembled an impressive group of performers to recreate “True Romance” in its entirety. Days prior to the event, Live Read impresario Reitman announced that Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette would be reprising their roles from the 1993 Tony Scott film as Clarence and Alabama Worley, two young lovers caught in the middle of brewing standoff between pimps, drug kingpins and Los Angeles police. You might not know who Gary Rydstrom is, but you've certainly heard him before. This is a man whose pioneering sound work has won him seven (!) Academy Awards and brought to life groundbreaking technological advancements like the first film presented in DTS sound ("Jurassic Park") and re-crafting sound mixes in 5.1 surround (after his breakthrough work on "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," he and James Cameron created a new multi-channel mix for the original "Terminator"). He's also directed a pair of Pixar short films ("Lifted" and "Hawaiian Vacation") and overseen the English language dubs of four Studio Ghibli movies ("Tales from Earthsea," "From Up on Poppy Hill," "Arrietty," and last year's Oscar-nominated masterpiece "The Wind Rises"). In short: he's kind of the coolest dude around.
And this weekend he adds another accomplishment to his already unfathomably long list, when his debut feature film "Strange Magic" debuts in theaters nationwide. This bizarre, George Lucas-produced animated fairy tale,...

TV Od starts tonight, and seems pretty much right up our street. Hosted by Matt Edmondson, it's about all the online comments people make about television shows. Since we love Twitter and telly, we have a sneaking suspicion this could be one of our new favourites. Still, we wanted to know more, so we got Matt on the phone to find out...
People online can get very angry about television.
"Digital Spy isn't the worst offender for people getting angry and leaving comments. I think it's partly that thing of people getting passionate about TV, particularly with cult things. People get very opinionated about it. And I think people think they know what they are talking about. If someone disagrees then it's nice to have a lively debate, isn't it?
"Will I be getting comments from the DS forums? I don't know, sometimes they're a little bit worthy on there.

We got more than one surprise in this episode, and for me one of them is that, yes, the show appears to be back on track. After the endless, dreary sludge of Neverland, we're back in Storybrooke And Fairytale Land with complimentary story lines, a mystery, and a new big bad worthy of Regina's bad side. Spoilers after the jump, yo. It's only right that the Wicked Witch would be such a worthy adversary for Regina because (surprise!) she's her sister. While I'm a little leery of another familial connection driving the plot (remember the whole Peter Pan brouhaha? He's my dad! And he's my granddad! And he looks younger than we are! This is So Weird!), at least this time it doesn't feel entirely pasted onto the plot. Instead, it's pretty straight forward -- Regina had every advantage, and we can easily believe the Wicked Witch has been burning...

Welcome back to the Nxt reviews, this week’s show starts with a promo video hyping Fandango appearing at tonight’s Nxt taping. Faaaaaan-daaaaaan-goooooo.

Emma makes her way out, in new ring attire, with her chosen partner for the night, Santino Marella. Oh dear. The fans, for some reason I can’t put my finger on anymore, pop loud for Santino. Santino speed walks and Emma does it too. The fans, before anything has really happened, chant “this is awesome”. Proof that there’s still some steam in the Santino train yet. Santino poses for the crowd and Fandango retorts with a dance move of two. The match from then on is merely a...

Funny woman Tina Fey paid a visit to the "Late Show with David Letterman" on Wednesday (August 21).
During her interview, the "Mean Girls" star revealed a shocking story about her New York City office.
"We're so excited to be back in Manhattan, in this nice new office, immediately got robbed. The office got robbed immediately. And I was like, 'Aw, we're back in the big city.' So then that was the most exciting thing that's happened," Miss Fey explained.

Olivia Newton-John has braved her share of bumps in the road. An autopsy revealed that the guy, who was hired as a contractor for the couple, had shot himself, according to the Jupiter Police Department. So weird! Here’s a fun fact about the MTV Video Music Awards: I adore them. If we’re talking about award shows with deserving honorees, the VMAs routinely reward the right artists at the right time. Past winners of the big title “Video of the Year” include some of the best clips of the past 30 years: Peter Gabriel‘s “Sledgehammer,” Sinead O’Connor‘s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” Madonna‘s “Ray of Light,” Lauryn Hill‘s “Doo Wop (That Thing),” and Lady Gaga‘s “Bad Romance.” Now that the 2013 nominees are here, it’s time to guess which clip deserves to join their ranks. Better yet, let’s do the moral thing and select which video should win. Here goes, ranked worst to first.
5. Bruno Mars, “Locked Out of Heaven”
I’m sorry to say this clocks in at #5 because it’s the most listenable, impressively sung radio hit on the tally.

When it comes to a thirst for all things horror, some people are born into darkness, while others require some terror training wheels. Looking at me now, you may not believe that I was once a big scaredy cat. I wanted nothing to do with anything remotely spooky, and even the slightest shift in music would see me running to turn the television off. But, like most kids of my generation, I was eased into the genre with bite-sized scares. In an era where there was a plethora of tailor-made chills for children, it took no time for me to convert from hiding under the blankets into a full-fledged fright fanatic. Here at FEARnet, we have a great fondness for the bygone days of creepy kids’ TV, as evidenced by our Funhouse block, which features an archive of episodes from some spooky Saturday mornings of yesteryear. In fact, when reflecting...
