When Knights Were Bold

Maid Marianne and Robin Hood want to be wed, but Marianne's kingly but broke father has engaged her to a rich prince in this, the last directorial credit of Volney White.

It had been seven years since the Paul Terry studio had gone through a period when every cartoon was an operetta; then, suddenly none. The staff had figured out how to integrate Philip Scheib's music into a cartoon so that it did not have to be the entirety of the show. However musicals were popular in this period and Scheib's collection of swing versions of "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes" and more original work got the job done as always.

Overall, it's another example of Terry's staff telling the same story it had many times before. It's amusing and unmemorable. Director White would return to the uncredited ranks of animators and story men and work, at least occasionally, into the 1960s, when he died.
