The novella was first optioned back in 1940. It took sixty years to reach the screen.
In the late 1950s, Lana Turner was offered the lead role in a proposed adaptation of the novel. But after the killing of her lover, Johnny Stompanato, at the hands of her teenage daughter, Cheryl Crane, Turner's casting, and eventually the movie, did not come to fruition.
Cameo: Mel Brooks can be seen in the train station at the end of the movie, holding hands with two little girls and running. Brooks was married to Anne Bancroft.
Sean Penn appears in this film with Anne Bancroft. Penn was married at the time to Robin Wright. The birth of their daughter prevented Wright from appearing in Robin Hood: Men in Tights with Bancroft's husband, Mel Brooks.
